Re: Well written...but :-(
by Nikhil Ambani on Nov 11, 2006 10:05 PM

A very well written article. I am sure most of the students feel the same way about their teachers / professors; be it from IIT, IIM or some not reputed institution. The fact of the matter is in today's world nobody values the life of the people anymore. It will always be upto to the public to do the "Right thing" - the definition of which again varies from person to person.
The situation is very similar to when our country was under the British rule, and it will have to be a revolution amongst the younger generation which will result in a change, if it ever happens. The middle class as it was rightly pointed out by a politician is very selfish - due to their own reasons...and nobody is necessarily Right or Wrong...Things are a lot more complex than they seem at face value. Hope everyone does their part in changing the system. I want to end this by saying that according to me "You cannot complain about the system, if you chose not to be a part of it"

Poor Prof. Iyer!
by rv on Nov 11, 2006 08:33 PM

Well said, Mr. Gupta. The professor probably chose his profession. But one has also heard it said that those who can't do anything else, teach. I may sound crude. But there it is.

by Kapil Gupta on Nov 11, 2006 12:57 PM

we know that whole society is corrupt but the corrupt society wants from the teacher to be honest. Is it right? If every body run for the money then why not the teacher? Society say that for any progressive and safe nation two profession are very compulsory one is teaching and second is defence but what you are paying for that? just think over it

nonsense

Who is stopping IIM professor for taking a job of their like, everything is dicated by market terms and I know very well sitting in IIM, they can earn equally hefty amount of money through consultancy and other means, though they have to share some percentage with their employer.

When are we going to change..
by Rajkumar on Nov 11, 2006 11:57 AM

I just happened to read this article and it is really touching. I really doubt our politicians have time to think about all these issues when all they have in mind is vote banks.

Professor''s last days.
by Alamelu on Nov 11, 2006 01:15 AM

My eyes were filled with tears, and I could hardly read the latter portions of the article, as I could feel the agony of the sufferings of the profesor and his wiofe, especially without money. Now that he has gone, I request you sir, to make a foundation, making the first receipent, the professor"s wife. Because, she would have spent everything to save her husband. But dignity(Just as you felt while offering the money) might desist her from asking. So do the needful to the lady.

Last days of an IIM Professor

Excellent article. My father was a Prof., I can relate to this article exactly.

We're all excited about great growths in various sectors - IT, Finance, Legal outsourcing etc., and in ancillary sectors, but the vast majority does not realize that there's no organic growth happening. Farmers, government services, most importantly the teaching community - which needs to be revered and pampered are not being taken care of. Our lawyers and Justices still wear the stupid old British handed down gowns - absolutely no relook at old ways, policies and processes. There's rampant corruption everywhere. Until the illiterate and self centered politicians are thrown out, our roads will continue to get flooded even with the slightest drizzle, our open sewers will continue to remain so and we'll continue to degenerate as a society.

IS this a propaganda platform???
by Sourav Chatterjee on Nov 11, 2006 12:31 AM  | Hide replies

Ah! another rediff.com editorial.
I symapthise with you,but what I dont understand is that is this an article to mourn your dear professor's death,or do India's great minds consider such artcles as part of the propaganda agenda.
To say that professors should be treated as different from other civil servants,is in effect demeaning the job that "other" civil servants do.
oh,and an IIM professor!! how can he not be payed executive salaries.yah,I know, the IIM contributes so much to India's growth, its students sacrifice so much for the alleviation of poverty in this country!!
I am apalled!!!!!
dudes, that the Govt. supports institutions like the IIM is itself surprising to me.in a country, where the prime problems are poverty and illiteracy, where a large portion of the society still lives below the poverty line,it is strange the Govt. pumps in so much money to produce morons who work in the stenchy back offices of Bangalore firms. The great success of these corporate managers in no way affect the way the "other India" lives.
To demand executive salaries from a Govt. that does not have enough to support the bare necessities of its people is the hallmark of the shameless management u hve lrn

hi Mr.Sourab,

No wonder states like West Bengal and Kerala have never been able to grow when other neighbouring states are able to do without communism. What happnd to Russia dude?

u can never make a person rich but ur communists thoughts r reflected clearly by saying why not all of us starve and be a poor and finally blame the govt for supporting if at all they do) intellectuals.Just think if u can create a place where evryone is rich, safe and healthy.

Just dont pen ur thoughts bcoz u have free space thru rediff.

Your comments stink of communism. I think you're probably a failed has-been who's trying to blame everything else for what you have become. Get therapy, old chap. Soon.
