Work in a BPO unit? Beware
by Balkrishna Palekar on Sep 16, 2004 11:05 AM

Well I agree to whatever the author says, but on secnd thought every other Occupation has an HAZARD associated with it. Typists were assosociated with finger injuries, sports is no different so on and so forth...That dosent mean we stop working in an Industry that has so much to offer us...There are ways and means to get over these hazards...HR Dept of any company has to take a big intiative here....like Yoga, Stress Mgmt Techniques, Better and healthy food..Recreational activities..The youth is tkaing to Smoking and Boozing in a big way...why not control that instead of looking at just the occupational hazards....Losing voice is also associated with smoking..look at that aspect also...

Work in a BPO? Beware
by CS Muralidhar on Sep 16, 2004 11:04 AM

After reading the article I also went thru' all the comments. I guess I am wrong in expecting our guys to react in a mature manner. Most are almost fuming at the author for voicing some true concerns.

True, manufacturing industries work all 24 hours and employ people to work in shifts. But remember, no employee, mark it, no employee works in the night shift all thru' the year or even for more than a fortnight. He gets to work in the night shift again after a month. I have worked in manufacturing for more years than the age of many of the guys foul mouthing the author. So you guys too need to do your research before snapping at others. Regularly eating your meal at the dead of night (between midnight and 4.00 am) leads to irreversible skin, digestive and excretory disorders is a well established medical fact. I know of at least 15 cases of BPO guys (all in the age group of 20-28) who are severly afflicted with these disorders and all have sworn never ever to enter a BPO office .They have spent many times more than what they earned in treating their medical problems without cure or complete relief. Now take your call.

Article is useless..
by Softpro on Sep 16, 2004 11:02 AM

Hi All,

I totally deny and really got hurt reading about BPO's. I want to highlight the facts of life and want to attract the attention of readers and the publisher both.....

My point is - "Whatever job you do in your life you are bound to face some or the other health problems as of continously working for long hours. No person one in this world can say i am relaxed and happy doing this job every jobwork is tiredsome and hectic so you are bound to health problems."

TThe most imp thing about life is "Money" as of "Money is everything and for everything you need money."...To live a life and support family you need money and for money you need a job. I just want to tell publisher that just imagine and keep yourself on the place of jobseekers who are struggling like anything for getting a job inspite of having good degress and not getting it.Its very easy boss for you to give advice to someone sitting on your job chair but for a sake just leave your job chair and you will see that you will be no where and at that time only BPO's MNC will be there for your job were.

"So think a lot before you write something ...else you will be no where where you are there".

by Saravanan Babu on Sep 16, 2004 10:52 AM

If everything is fine in BPO or Call Centre as some claim in this column, why attrition rate is very high compare to other industries?

What the author wants to say?
by Sreenivas Anil on Sep 16, 2004 10:49 AM

What is it the Author wants to say?
The author wants all the Indians working in BPO's to resign and think doing something for the society they live in? I have been working in a BPO for three years and by now I have earned a decent executive position, I go to office at 11 and come back by 8 PM. Many start as an agent in BPO, but if they want to suceed they can.

Its not the only one.
by Rejith on Sep 16, 2004 10:34 AM

BPOs are not the only lot where u work more than 12 hours a day? Then why to cry loud on one single industry whcih churns out more employment opportunity than any other within such a short period. Its not the BPOs that are to be changed. Rather, can the author think of a culture where the companies insist on 8X5 routine instead of 24X7. Its the mind set of the companies to be changed and there is no point in provoking the youngsters to be unemployed than to be overemployed.

Well, there are more to think!
by Rajesh Segu on Sep 16, 2004 10:33 AM

Well, the article seems to be very very interesting, but many statements can be still believed to be arguments.

Many of our friends are right, in the point that, they give more jobs to the youth.

I would like to focus on a point, every industry is transforming itself, working late nights, have to finish work as tragets specify, tensions; This is due to the Competation that exisists, everybody are getting into such act. Personal Success is very very important.

Hi Author
by Allwyn Fernandes on Sep 16, 2004 10:28 AM

Hey ....author i really appreciate your thoughts on this ..but what would you expect from the local corprates..You thing they would pay a normal person Rs.15,000/- start..no that would not be possible .and the same is paid by these BPO's then tell me why would''nt i work there..people speak because they start getting a complex too.and a youth of India who can speak well is getting paid for his voice he lends..is'nt that emplyoment to the fullest and also foriegn exchange to pay our countries debts.

i think soo.... bye man take care you BPO ants and lets keep on working towards the betterment of our country.

Jai-Hind.
