I think there is nothing to rejoice regarding BPO...its going to be a major social problem...As happened to Mexico after US shifted its many industries there. Majority people used to get job in those industries and didnt go for higher education..resulting in total imbalance. I can see the similar thing happening..its been too much of IT and engineering...our social sciences and basic sciences are still ancient...we need balance in our society...may God give wisedom to policymakers.

Work in a BPO unit ? Beware

Whats so sacrosant about BPO employees? How come these "saviours" of our younger citizens suddenly get so very concerned.
Did they know that there have always been hundreds of thousands of persons who have been working night shifts and these have been doing so for many many years ? If there are youngsters who want to do so for the good salaries that are paid so be it. Does the author know that there have been tel operators who have been doing just such jobs and retired from them ?
Lots of jobs have their own attendent problems. Drivers get piles, travelling sales men get ulcers, high temsion jobs get high BP and so on. Why dont you worry about all these jobs.
Lets take a break from ridiculous statements and look at what is gained.

Taken aback

Hi,
When i read this article...i started thinking about, how well the author had brought the points which most of us dont even care about. Afterall we work for our food and family. If we dont have time to spend with them, whats the point in making money.

And moreover, lot of my collegues who are in the early 30's suffer from diabetes.. I think eating pizzas and sitting in front of the monitors attribute to this.

And thing which set me back is others response saying that this article is 'crap'. Its this mentality of urs which makes the employer suck the blood out of you.

Kudos!!!! For calling the bluff

Hats of to you Mr.C P Chandrasekaran. You are the one person who had the guts to call a spade as a spade.

All these people employed in the BPO industry fail to look at the larger picture. Agreed the salary is indeed enticing.......but what use is it....if you cannot enjoy it. In any case your savings (if at all) is gonna be spent in a few years trying to get your health back to the pink shade.

True, this industry does not add ANY VALUE....to individuals or the society. A person deprived of 6hrs of sleep in the night CANNOT CLAIM FREEDOM.

Hope, our guys get more sane!!!!!!!!!!!

What I felt after reading this article is surprise...How can a site like rediff post such amateurish articles on their home page? It is such a waste of time!! Sure there are health hazards in a call centre, more so for their timings. Not that we who work on the computer all day are spared from these things. These are hazards of the new millenium and the new order of things. The next generation will have different kinds of jobs ang different hazards. Let us get ready for that for our children. The human body is an amazing thing. Of course you have to work. You need the money. And some people have to work harder and some people need to work at nights... the best way to go through this is to take precautions like regular eye checks and good posture. Lets not hit darts in the dark. Let us see this as a potential threat to our bodies but necessary evil nevertheless. Let us give constructive articles to these call centre executives who may not have another choice- about health, about career, and not make stupid statements like- "youth of the country- arise". Thats exactly what they are trying to do.

Payal,

I think you have failed to understand what the author has tried to highlight. Its not the heealth concern alone not it is related to generating or getting new age job. The article is about a social concern. I am afraid, it appears that you are a alien to either Gibran or Orwell, who find reference in this article. If you can, read these two and you will understand what the author is trying to convey.

I agree that there are some health hazards relating to the BPO industry. But are there enough jobs in other industries to take up the youth of India.

you say dont sell yourself cheap to pizza and pepsi. Will your bhelpuri and Jaljeera give jobs to us.

Thanks to the BPO industry, the youth of today can eat 2 square meals a day
