Definitely the worst airport is chennai. Cant get worse than Chennai for the amount of international traffic coming in. Its worse than a bus stand.

The useless govt planned to have a dream airport at Sriperumbur operation by 2020. But the plan remains only on paper and not even an inch has moved towards achieving it. Both the parties are busy dealing with corruption cases against them and the new airport plan is the last thing in their mind. We are the poor souls suffering on all counts.

While Bangalore airport is quite good and has touched international standards to a certain extent, the customs officials there are by the far the worst in the country. I have entered india via Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Trichy airports so far and I can safely state that. The main reason for this behavior is the sudden increase in international trafic in the past decade. And the expect you to speak to them in kannada while answering their irrelevant queries. I was once even asked, If I ever carried drugs :)

Mumbai and Chennai customs are generaly decent and professional. I prefer those gateways anyday.

KIAL is like that from the beginning - we can't help it and that's how all the illegal activities are monitored and curtailed

All behave like saints unless otherwise they are caught here or anywhere

Well, Chennai airport officials (or for that matter anybody in Tamil Nadu) do not speak any language other than Tamil. I have had numerous bad experiences flying into Chennai from Japan via Singapore or Malaysia where they would ask questions in Tamil and would repeat the question in Tamil if I answered in English as I was only in transit and did not stay in Tamil Nadu. Compared to any part of Tamil Nadu, Bangalore is very cosmopolitan. Shame on you if your only grouse is that even though you stay in Bangalore, you do not know any Kannada at all.

Dont know in which world you live, But if there is one international airport where the officials are inclined to speak in english, it is chennai airport irrespective of you being a local or not (now dont read into the lines, I said the airport customs and immigrations offiicals, not the entire state). May be you had those one-of incidents. The main reaosn being, chennai airport is international in true sense and has been serving international passendgers since indenpendance unlike the self-proclaimed cosmopolitan Bengaluru (oops Bangalore), which grew exponentially only in recent years. And if I were to tell you that Chennai is the third busiest aiport in india after Delhi and Mumbai, you probably woudn't believe me. May be you do a bit of wiki search and know for yourself.

Also on the language issue, "Necessity is the mother in invention".i.e. Unless and until you are forced to do something, you never do it. Bangaloreasn take pride in hindi knowledge and have already given up their rich language kannada for the national cause. So why the h*e*l*l should I , being an outsider, even bother to learn the local tongue ??? Hindi works for me and I am happy, period.

I couldn't believe that Mumbai airport would be having such a pathetic aesthetics and skeletal infra. And if you consider that is in a metro which is known as India's commercial hub , it becomes worse.

Mumbai is like a bus stand, you can see planes waiting in que to land or take off. They should move it to the outskists, as is the norm.

The best is without doubt T 3.

I don't know abt how Kokata is but when I last visited it was old and creaky, but no congestion.

From the smaller airports, Patna too is poor. You have to walk and drag your luggage in.

LEARN TO ACCEPT..
by chandrashekhar iyer on Oct 29, 2014 03:50 PM  | Hide replies

All those who have posted so far their views on airports, need to accept that people make or break anything . We you can keep your house clean why not the public place, all people misuse and make the places dirty and blame the government. I have seen even the most educated travelling in suits, throwing, spitting at places. Only admisinstration lapses need to be attributed to government or airlines, but maintaining the cleaniliness is the responsibility of every citizen.

I couldn't agree with you more sir!
We as a people are inherently dirty and filthy in our habits and we lack civic sense. I traveled through the new international airport in Mumbai twice recently. Shocking to see how bad the roads are just a kilometer away from the departure/arrival lounges. While the terminal is fairly good, the authorities who should be keeping the supporting infra clean are most certainly sleeping on their feet.

Chennai by far !
by paper india on Oct 29, 2014 03:42 PM  | Hide replies

Chennai by far is the worst of the lot, far ahead of even the smaller airports like Vizag, Tuticorin, Patna, Lucknow etc. I normally visit some of the smaller places in South India and have to connect to my hometown via Chennai.
First of all, if your domestic flight arrives more than 4 hours before your international connection, they do not allow you inside the terminal. One has to stand and while away his time on the pavement outside. Even in the terminal, there is barely anything to eat or any other recreational activity. The toilets stink, and the limited places to sit seem to be occupied perpetually by locals. Checking in and immigration seem to take forever.
I have found a new route now, Trivandrum. Small but not inconvenient.

Airport needing overhaul/renovation
by brajeshwar nath on Oct 29, 2014 02:00 PM

Patna tops the list, no doubt. Its too small for the volume of traffic it handles, runway is small and the airport is quite congested. But the govt. is not able to provide land/site for new airport. what a shame! when all else is improving in Bihar, why not this airport or other airports like Gaya. They need to think Big, futuristic - Gaya attracts lakhs of pilgrims every year from India as well as abroad.
