Truth is that

Most of the jobs, including those in IT, ITES, BPOs are of such a nature that even a highschool drop out can do them. And this is how the industry is surviving. Why the hard core engineering skills are needed for those jobs?

Applaud the survey..
by G S on Feb 29, 2012 05:07 PM

have you noticed in the first slide itself that, the survey sample is merely 55000 while the number of graduates passed out every year is 5 lakhs!
Based on such a small sample (10% of the overall size), the results can be any thing. Statistics can be cooked
While not agreeing with this survey, would like to say that such surveys are always misleading and meant for some biased decision if at all it is meant for

Unemployability of Engineers
by Rajaram on Feb 29, 2012 05:06 PM

The problem is due to reservations in education during admission. Nearly 50% of the seats are filled up through reservation based on caste and religion. Tf only merit is considered for admission, the situation will reverse.

Blame govt. policy of education
by Pele Lele on Feb 29, 2012 05:01 PM

In the name of mass education govt has been asking schools to promote the students without determining or evaluating their capability. This has been going on in India in many states and naturally such weak base of education will create only clerical engineers after joining privately mushroomed engineering colleges and Institutes. I am not at all surprised with this article, which is unfortunately, factual.

Truly appreciate Rediff for bringing this kind of contemporary burning issue and a real fact which is boldly written in true spirit of journalism. Yes it is a fact a lot of qualified people do not have jobs and a lot of deserving candidates are not employable. Govt of India does almost zero for its citizens There is one agenda Iam hearing for over 50 years Garibi hatao which will neve happen so the missled class an others have to fend for themselves. So Indian politics will always revolve around the farmers poor hunger etc.. So where is the scope for something improving and getting better So now we see poverty with an engineering degree so better do some work or learn business rather than going to college and buying seat whcih is a waste of money.

Unemployable IT Engineers

Lot of companies like IBM just hire without conducting proper interviews just to show bench to bag projects.. sometimes things go wrong as now and this bench never gets deployed into projects and hence bench employees are given pink-slips!!!.. SO, NEVER EVER JOIN IBM!!

your statements are contradictory
1. IBM hires un-employable engineers
2. Dont join IBM
Going by this what an un-employable engineer should do other than joining company like IBM?
Be happy that though un-employable you got job in IBM atleast for some time and enjoy

it is a vicious cycle!!..IBM hires un-employable engineers as even mediocre candidates get thru' IBM interviews.. but since they do not get deployed due to lack of Projects OR Projects not liking the candidates skills, and they get even more un-employable!!!

IBM is one of the oldest and largest employer for IT engineers and IBM has created managers throughout the world ......in such a situation someone saying IBM hires unemployable engineers to show Bench strength.....Thought to be noticed!!!!!!!
