Engineers not only meant for IT industry
by Priyadarshi Bhattacharya on Feb 29, 2012 09:07 PM  | Hide replies

All engineers are not meant to work in IT. Just because they are not employable by the IT industry does not mean they cannot perform well in manufacturing, construction and similar areas. Let the IT sector take Comp and IT engineers and leave mech, civil, chemical etc engineers alone. And yes, shut down 80 % of all engineering colleges. They are worse than bogus!

Good point - shutting down 80% of bogus colleges will itself increase the employ-ability %

in that case i think they have to shut down most of the engineering colleges in India because apart form a few rest all are way below standard, has below standard student and teachers.

IT companies and universities need to be flogged!
by Ujwala Kulkarni on Feb 29, 2012 07:41 PM

Engineering graduates were never job ready. A fresh grad was always a liability. In the yester years Cos had to spend expensive resources on training talented graduates before they could deliver. This picture has changed ever since the IT Cos came on the scene. They want everything on a platter. For years these body shoppers made money from untrained Engg graduates who didn't know which end was up. For then, the margins were large and demand far outstripped the supply. One wonders what kind of software these brats wrote if the Cos find today's graduate unemployable? Demand and supply is the name of the game.

IT story of India
by Dona Paula on Feb 29, 2012 06:09 PM

The IT industry is full of fake resumes. Complete a course in 2 months at a road side institute, fake your resume with the help of a consultant, and the nexus between the HR, Hiring manager and the consultant will do the rest. Since most indian IT jobs (even at top MNCs) are mundane repeatative work, nobody loses in the bargain. The downside though is the ego and arrogance that has crept into these individuals who are paid exorbitantly for doing minimal mundane works. Now that is the real tragedy.

All can not be engineers
by Soj on Feb 29, 2012 05:34 PM

This report should be brought to notice of our politicians who opened number of engineering colleges declining the quality. Generally 5-10% population comes in intellectia class. Otherwise everybody would be a scientist. Fact is that very few people are only intellegent and all other are normals. Then why to load heavy education on them. There are other field where poeple can be made experts such as agreeculture, commerce, infrastructures. SO the admission to engineering courses should be limited based on aptitude.

This is not Shocking at all. The 80 20 rule applies to every industry and every Company.
80% of the employees are unemployable everywhere.Productivity comes from only 20% of the people.

One more thing that comes into picture here is regionality....Telugu manager hires all telugu ...tamil hires all tamilians and Marathi hires all marathis.....No stress is given on his abilities but his regional and language qualification is enough for most!!!!

emplyoability

Innumerable Colleges do not have staff. Leave alone qualified. It is a BIG BUSINESS. Engg Colleges are routinely owned by BIG WIGS. So, no one dares to question them what their intent is.I see a drastic change in the way students talk to to their lecturers.Coming from a TRADITIONAL Engg College... I find this SHOCKING...!!!

The way they talk is not shocking it is the way teachers teach that is shocking. I feel that should they have test of the teachers teaching at these engineering colleges the figure will be much more dismal. I conduct more than 3-4 interviews every year and most of the engineering graduates particularly from UP/MP/TN do not know what Pythagoras theorem is. Seldom mechanical engineers can identify 4 strokes in an 4S engine. and absolutly no one know the Newtons law.

What is so shocking about this? Unethical "Education Entrepreneurs" - a species with which India has been blessed in abundance - latched onto the "trend" for Computer Science courses. Tens of thousands of Courses in Bachelor of Computer Applications and Information Technology and even Master's in Computer Applications and Information Technology have been initiated at thousands of Institutes and Distance Education Centres in India. The "graduates" of these courses are barely literate in English or their Regional Language leave alone Computer Hardware or Software. I know since I worked as the Head of one such Institution for three years where I struggled to bring about quality improvement and then quit in disgust.
