IIT Students

I fully agree with Mr. Ramesh, In fact I had told this on several occasions in my own circle. I came to IIT from a rural college in Kerala and was appalled at the quality of teaching and the bloated ego of the faculty. Most of the teachers had degrees from foreign universities, but had no commitment to the profession and was more concerned about the number of PhDs they can create by hook or crook. They even used to play mean politics to thwart the research work of students working under other professors. There were of course good teachers, but that was the exception. If the government can provide the type of infrastructure in IIT in other colleges I am sure you will produce equally brilliant engineers.

Sorry to say but QIP candidates are the worst. Invariably they go back to their college with a baby, whether they produce quality papers is moot.

Jairam is right
by kritimohan ghosh on May 24, 2011 09:00 PM

I was a BTech student at IIT-K and I can fully understand Jairam's concerns as I believe he is also a former IITian. Professors used to be under achievers mostly and sometimes pretty frustrated with what they were doing. Couple of professors had the grudge that they themselves were not from IIT and thinks like that..

however some professors were really great and I still remember couple of my professor consulting for big companies and making millions even in Nineties.

completely unwarranted comments by ramesh
by wizardo id on May 24, 2011 08:24 PM

ramesh wants to projects the students to be larger than the faculty, or bring in some sort of a competition here. or was he dissed with some of his earlier lecturers, and now he's used a forum to dump them ?

this might be a convenient occasion to bring in foreign universities just before the noise of the general elections (and let the election din, drown the noise of local educational setups)

ramesh just set the ball rolling.

IIT/IIM should do introspection.
by sumit mathur on May 24, 2011 07:34 PM

Well Ramesh stated facts although his conclusion may be wrong. There is not enough top class research conducted in Indian universities incl. IIT/IIM's so it is very difficult to call them world class institutions, although they may have top class institutions. Is it the lack of quality professors or infrastructure is not known to me personally but agains teachers should be doing more to make good research coming out of these institutions.

This is not the first time Jairam Ramesh did the act of putting his foot in his big mouth! And certainly this not going to be the last time too! The man has an extraordinary penchant to such acts. What is more, he has his admirers too!

Ramesh is basically insulting his birth-giver CK Ramesh by saying
by Michael Lobo on May 24, 2011 06:51 PM

Ramesh is basically insulting his birth-giver CK Ramesh by saying he is not worldclass. Ramesh should tell Sibal n Sonia to fund higher education sector more than wht the country spends on defense. 2G scam money (around 1lak crores) is enough to build 1000 IITs and 1000 Harvards. What to do with corrupt, insensitive n looters of this country .... Big Tamasha going on, performed by india-looters.
