Post graduate courses at the IITs
by piri on May 25, 2011 01:01 AM

do not have half the appeal nor are half as challenging (to get into or to pursue) as graduate courses !

And Mr. Jeeva, who did just a post grad course at an IIT, perhaps feels the need to challenge any opinion expressed anywhere that there are lower tiers of merit at the IITs as compared to the one occupied by graduate course students !

Jairam Ramesh is spot on!

Fits to speak truth like a leader indeed.

With all due respect to Mr.Jeeva, when people talk about "cream of the country" to refer to IITians, it is attributed only to BTechs. The institution that IITs offer match the aspirations of MTechs.

Teaching standards in INDIA is a MOCKERY and IIT no exception
by Arvind KS on May 24, 2011 10:35 PM

Most of the people in INDIA becomes teachers not by choice, but more because they do not get job or competent to survive cut throat competition.

Then comes the next stage. They get involve in to politics of the system and take out their frustration of not being competent by becoming lethargic and unproductive themselves.

Then comes a situation when they pull down very few energetic and willing teachers by playing politics with them, or creating bias amongst students with more infleuntial students getting in to their kitty.

Then comes a situation when they spread this epidemic across others and destroy the culture.

Teaching in India is a mockery and will remain so in future as well.

Pedigree scores over performance - the PLIGHT of INDIA
by Ujwala Kulkarni on May 24, 2011 10:27 PM  | Hide replies

There are two sides to this story. In fact several. J. Ramesh graduated from IITB in 1975 soon after the collaboration between Soviet Union and the institute ended. IITB lacked glamour those days for it didn't have collaboration with more sought after western countries. Also those were the days of in-breeding. A typical IITB faculty member those days was MSc, MTech followed by Ph. D. in IITB itself or one of the soviet block countries. I can understand JR's frustration. .

Why this brouhaha when there are well defined norms to gauge the performance of an institute. Miles ahead of the IITs are institutes like IISc, TIFR and indeed some of the university departments. It's significant that these institutes concentrate more on research than glamour - which means no BTech. students and no JEE. Believe it or not, IITs scored over many other established engineerinmg colleges earlier - not on technical knowledge - but due to the prowess of their students in solving daily crosswords! This improved theiir verbal ability score in GRE and this is what the wise men in USA were looking for.

Indians, the so called Indian corporates included, seem to think that talent is synonymous with marks and performance in competitive exams. Nothing could be further from truth. Most Indian exams test ability of a student to perform mathematical simplification. China has commented that India is the weakest of BRIC countries. Unless obsession for marks goes it will continue to be so.

o you have written a great and a beautiful analysis...u r so perfect in noting the chronic problem that ails the indian education system for a long time..spot on..and yes i am absolutely wid u on the fact that there are many institutes in India that are miles ahead than iit's...iit's and iim's are mere obsession of the indian media and the government when univs like JNU,DU institutes like AFMC,AIIMS,JNSCAR go unnoticed daily inspite of their high end reseach..

Worldclass debate of IIT faculty
by Ravindra Suktankar on May 24, 2011 10:07 PM

When power goes to head there is loss of logic.
Thinking alters. One compromises the very job he is meant to control. Lavassa, Jaitapur, etc. are exammples. Then comes lame excuses after retirement when no one cares. This is India!

The Broader Picture
by mohit kumar on May 24, 2011 10:03 PM

Jeeva is not completely wrong, guys dont generalize not all teachers are duffers and not all are newtons, Ramesh is taking a macro level view consisting of IITs and IIMs, Jeeva is being very objective in his experience with the kind of folks he came acrosss he is one lucky b...........d who consistently interacted with some of the best at IIT-BOMB, we should not forget that IITs have had their share of scandals - remember the private coaching institute at IIT Kharagpur, recently there was a report that all entract q papers are available not just for IITs but for other entrances also, which answers to some extent jeevas surprise as to how some of his collaegues made it through the entrance - IITs and IIMs are slowly going the NIFT way, I dont completely blame the teachers they hardly get paid anything, look at amitabh who became a druggie teaching at IIT and till date curses himself that he did not join the industry and gives as interview each year in the print media/ this is a big problem, RAMESH has done the right thing by highlighting it before these colleges lose their edge
