Depression is a mental factor affected by various abstract things & psychological influences. This is bound to be so since India believes more in values & their being upheld at any cost even if they warrant sacrifice of life unlike in case of most of the western societies where life is taken easy unmindful of what others care or feel for.Our social links & bondage are much more intense & interwoven than any other nation's in the world-say eg we believe in monogamy one wife for one man & vice versa in most of the parts of our country while in case of western societies, dating by a boy at teen age is taken as a qualification itself. We care more for our ancient culture & the time tested values it taught us out of the experiences of our elders. And there is no wonder if a person feels depressed when things go utterly in a reverse direction tilting all his cherished ideas & aspirations.Further ours is not so much a materialistic society as others & believes mostly in austerity & contentment while the ultra modernity in the other countries calls forth for a minute to minute change in their life styles in tune with the several innovations influencing them.A person sticking on to certain principles is certain to suffer a psychological set back at some or other point of time. That is what exactly is happening in case of most of the Indians undergoing traumatic moments at times.

We indians are only carrier oriented as we know if dont do better in your carrier you will be no where because of our economy and because of corrupt people, getting and keeping jobs is not easy or settle in business is tough, plus we think of our future and family than individual benefits, where as western world they thinks for themselves and for today only. The condition could improve only when we have more income resources , easy job availabilty, less timing for work, and government money is properly utilised for nation and people developement.

A depressed lot
by chris on Jul 29, 2011 08:34 AM  | Hide replies

Just ten years back there had been another such survey and the findings said Indians were the happiest people in the world !!! What has happened in those ten years that India catapulted to the top rank in depression ?? Doesn't it prove right what our ancient saints said prosperity brings more woes ?? Another of the survey has said the poverty level in the country reduced to 22% and ten to fifteen years time poverty would be erased from country's economic scenario. Where we would stand then on this depression analysing benchmark ?

good point Chris. Anyway you might be interested to know that the article above has misread the survey. If one checks the original survey it says the opposite, that 75% of Indians have not had a single episode of depression in their lives, and this figure of 75% is the best in the world. Rediff and indeed most other media in India have copied from The Independent newspaper's article and that man had read the survey data wrongly.

Not entirely WHO's fault. They asked for all-India data but only JIPMER Pondicherry sent the data so they analysed that data. The other all-India institutes did not send their data and govt is finding out why.

India, the most depressed nation in the WORLD

Its very much true and the main reason behind this is that nothing is expected lawful, justice is delayed so much that even if it is got it becomes meaningless or farce. In most of the cases it looks as if he is foolish who is working as a law binding citizen.

It is very difficult for a honest man to leve a dignified life in india. This country is a palace for crooks and pimps. They are crorepatis. there is no law and order. Indians are uncapable of governing themselves. Only money makes things go in this country. India is a failed banana republic.
