D. Goel pkl. afternoon 3.45 pm Saturday, July 30, 2011. It is not clear if the biomedical criteria for identifying some Person as "Depressed" are completely marked out without vagueness .If this is not so, surveys so carried out are likely to give problematic Results. However ,I am certain that more than 40% poor indians who are lower than our national Average are certainly very poorly served in terms of basic needs of living including Food and Medicine. They are forced to live in poor surroundings with hardly any toilets. This has happened despite our tall claims of creating a Welfare State, ever since decolonisation Goel
Population is the root of all problems in India which we tend to overlook every time we address any issue. With this problem all other measures to make living better will not be enough.
See the original survey at the website of BioMedCentral - the article is called "Major depression is a global health threat". According to the article only 25% Indians have ever had a depression episode, and only 9% have persistent depression.
The figure of 25% is the best in the world.
The 36% figure quoted in the article above refers to the percentage amongst those who have had depression who have had it persistently. So the 36% is not that important when it is on a base of only 25% which is the best in the world.
Actually according to the survey, the US and French are the most depressed in the world. But our Indian media, being depressed themselves in the urgency to print news fast, have reported the wrong conclusion!!!!

Maybe you are right. But one must agree to the fact that there is an alarmingly rising trend of depression. It probably was not like this in the past. There was a lot more happiness around. When I travelled in trains and buses, I could feel the happiness in people's faces. I don't see this anymore now. People seem to be devoid of any sense of humour. I think BPO and ITES businesses with their irregular work schedules, have changed the city life dramatically.
The survey says only 36 per cent people are depressed. It means the remaining 64 per cent are happier lot. It is not clearly mentioned whether it is the rural or urban people are depressed. It is seen that more and more farmers are committing suicide. Therefore, it is definitely the rural population, which is reeling under depression. Another question is how can in a country where a God man is teaching the Art Of Living can be depressed?

On reading the original survey we find that the above news article is wrong because the survey shows that only 25% respondents from India (which is the best figure in the world) have had any single instance of depression and only 9% have persistent depression. Hence the survey actually says Indians are among the least depressed in the world (as opposed to US and France which are the most depressed). But the rediff article above is wrong. So JJ Sir, please form your opinion accordingly. And forget rural or urban, the survey was conducted among respondents in Pondicherry only (JIPMER)so it may not be representative of India at all.
Depression is a mental factor affected by various abstract things & psychological influences. This is bound to be so since India believes more in values & their being upheld at any cost even if they warrant sacrifice of life unlike in case of most of the western societies where life is taken easy unmindful of what others care or feel for.Our social links & bondage are much more intense & interwoven than any other nation's in the world-say eg we believe in monogamy one wife for one man & vice versa in most of the parts of our country while in case of western societies, dating by a boy at teen age is taken as a qualification itself. We care more for our ancient culture & the time tested values it taught us out of the experiences of our elders. And there is no wonder if a person feels depressed when things go utterly in a reverse direction tilting all his cherished ideas & aspirations.Further ours is not so much a materialistic society as others & believes mostly in austerity & contentment while the ultra modernity in the other countries calls forth for a minute to minute change in their life styles in tune with the several innovations influencing them.A person sticking on to certain principles is certain to suffer a psychological set back at some or other point of time. That is what exactly is happening in case of most of the Indians undergoing traumatic moments at times.

More than that the dilemma is what driving our people into depression where we have western materialism that has crept in and threatening our values, culture, relationships. The depression is a result of struggle to preserve all this. If all the people of our country have equal regards to our way of life then this would not be possible. But there is lack in conviction.
