Even i have been a fan of cafe madras, and i totally agree with you on the taste part.
I have seen nice food joints turning a/c and then loosing all the taste . thank god cafe madras isn't going their way .
Well Abhishek you should also try "Mani's Lunch home" ,which is not very far from cafe madras serves South Indian lunch in authentic way i.e on a banana leaf.

Wallah !! The article seems to be about a typical food joint, which have gone scarce off late. So try enjoy it rather than taking a Goegraphy class
First of all it is not Udipi it is Udupi a small temple town in coastal Karnataka. It is not Madras based hotel, it is Karnataka based Kannada people running hotel. You people do not know that there is a state called Karnataka & the people speak Kannada as a local language -grow up man, get your facts corrected !

these funny article writers, (yes, because in their whole life time, they cant become authors), dont know anything about madras, anything about udupi, anything about idli, and anything about kamat. yet these idiots write, some jokers publish, and we waste our time!
Please get your facts right Sir. Udipi cusine is no way related to Madras. People from north do not know their geography. For them everything that is related to south comes from Madras. Udipi is small temple town in coastal Karnataka. Udipi and Madras are almost 800 Kms apart. I am surprised that rediff's proof reading is so poor.

Forget Madras Cafe...if we are talking of todays Udipi restaurants which have sprung up all over the place, I would say hats off to these guys the way they are able to dole out all kinds of cuisine frm one single Kitchen. Chinese, Punjabi, Malwani, Italian, Mexican now-a-days. But, the fact is the Sambhar comes with sugar addition, nowhere in South India or Even for that matter Udipi they add-up sugar to the Sambhar. All Punjabi Vegetable dishes contain the same masala, even in the Grade A's. The Captain or the waiter will anounce the list of the best & fresh as Paneer Butter Masala, Veg. Kadai, Veg. Kofta, Veg. Makhanwala, etc but, not the single vegetable dishes. Probably they add on yesterdays & the cheaper vegetables in the market. And then the turnover business. You have bill even before you have finished your dessert or the Chai/cold drink. Even for that matter the Grade A's where your table is not for the whole evening.
The only advantage I see in there is the clean sitting area (I doubt the kitchen's) these restaurants offer but, most employ child labour brought from villages around Udipi.
