Udupi and Madras are two different cities present in two different states. Udupi is in west coast, Karnataka and Madras is in east coast Tamil Nadu. This author needs serious education on India's geography. Please have some responsibility before posting such nonsense and ill researched topic

Ppl, Udupi cuisine is a style which is synonymous with being purely vegetarian since the brahmins of Udupi were very particular that they do not eat non-veg food.. this concept took ground in mumbai due to the large influx of south indian people who wanted pure veg food there... i also know many many marathi people who eat non-veg only on some particluar days.. so Udupi cuisine was some kind of confirmation...

As the name of the original owner suggests, he may belong to a sub-sect of the saraswat caste (kamat) and may have found it convenient to name it Cafe Madras since Kings' circle and adjoining areas has the largest concentration of tamilians in Mumbai... a good ploy for increasing business and maintaining it...

also, due to globalisation i dont feel that there is any mid-level restaurant which serves delicacies which strictly belongs to any one type of cuisine... if you can find schezwan dosa in mumbai, then you can find tamil delicacies in an Udupi restaurant

clear case of confusion and ignorance of folks from the higher latitudes unable to (or bother to) distinguish between the fine tastes of those from lower latitudes.
all southies categorised as madrasis,
grow up folks, even foreigners can tell the differences now a days.
except for the common factors like the breakfast items, all the southern states have own fantastic cuisines.
"mandeji" seems never to have gone out of mumbai.
and rediff please get your headlines/titles right

Udipi not from madras
by Aarti K on Feb 15, 2010 01:37 PM  | Hide replies

I am from Maharashtra. I believe Udipi is small village near Karwar (Coastal Karnataka). Generally the Shetty community is in the hotel business and they are excellent managers of hotel business. Why this writer has mentioned Madras I don't know. Even the dishes mulgapodi or thuppa dosa seem unfamiliar. Maybe someone from Madras can explain

nfact the Dakshina Kannada District (Including Udupi District) was under the Presidency of Madras during British Raj.Obviously all the udipi (Udupi) Brahmins have migrated to Chennai(Madras), Mumbai, Banalore etc.to put up their restaurants.

Even i have been a fan of cafe madras, and i totally agree with you on the taste part.

I have seen nice food joints turning a/c and then loosing all the taste . thank god cafe madras isn't going their way .

Well Abhishek you should also try "Mani's Lunch home" ,which is not very far from cafe madras serves South Indian lunch in authentic way i.e on a banana leaf.
