Firstly,Udupi is a temple town near Mangalore, Karnataka and has nothing to do with Madras or Chennai or Tamil Nadu for that matter. Secondly all restaurants that claim to cater Udupi cuisine have their roots in Udupi and speak a language called Tulu instead of Tamil. The invention of the cuisine was to cater to the general public and not just the Tamil blue or white collared. Heck i think it was to cater to the Kannadiga's from South Canara. Lastly there is no Udupi Tradition as such what you talk about. People from Udupi who started restaurants in Pune/Mumbai just used the term to denote good south indian food. Please get your facts right before you write an article.

Infact the Dakshina Kannada District (Including Udupi District) was under the Presidency of Madras during British Raj.Obviously all the udipi (Udupi) Brahmins have migrated to , Mumbai, Chennai(Madras), Banalore etc.to put up their restaurants.Obviously Majority of the ppl think and call the restaurants as Madrasi Restaurants.

Yes. Right. the tendency to overlook all south-indians as Madrasis is still not gone in most parts of our country. wonder if we will end up the US way where the knowledge is confined to their sub-regions.

Sivaprasad, If you ask northindians to point Bangalore or Hyderabad on the map they wont know. Most north indians do not know much about the rest of the country. South Indians are a little better.
