I hope the Vogue which is one of the leading fashion magazine dispels that fair skin is beautiful concept. All matrimonial adv. modeling assignment vacancies in various fields opt for fair skin ladies. This is more in ladies than in gents. (India is a male dominated society) It really bugs me when they show fairness creams with result in 7 days. I know of people using it for n number of years with the same complexion. All you people in commanding positions in the field of advertisements, modeling, fashion shows, etc are in a better position to remove this OBSESSION.

neelima, at the risk of sounding "racist", I must correct you.
What you are listing are examples of discrimination.
But it is not simply a case of black and white. There are many shades of gray in between.
And BTW discrimination usually based on who is in majority.
Especially in the case of your North over South point.
South Indian are capable of the same discrimination when their numbers allow them to regardless of where they are.
I have witnessed many cases in North Indian cities where South Indians form groups of fellow South Indians in companies and create barriers to the entry of Non-South Indian.
And for your kind information we will never give up this tendency to discriminate. It is not inherited from the British. We have been like this for 5000 years!!

It called better 'discrimination' on the basis of majority and minority! It depends for everything as religion, languages, power of money, power of locality, power of voice and power of politics, terrorism of strength! It happens all over India with Muslim vs Hindu/ Hindu vs Christian and all other minorities.THE BIGGEST MIXED & CULTURALLY BIASED country in this world.

Yaaa, You are quite right and I think it's all becs of the mentality we have from the time of before 1947.
He sings '' It no matter if yur black or white '' - but I WONDER why he did plastic surgery to get his skin tone to white like a dough from black like a crow.
I personally think why noone likes black is because all ugly animals are black - Crow ( yuck ), Black Mamba ( Most posionus snake on earth ) and all sexy lookin creatures are white - blondes, love birds etc .....
Yes of course. We have to do something to remove color prejudice, Include dark complexioned girls also for beauty contexts ,let them get the prize also.

There is no prejudice in selecting a dark complexion girl for the beauty queen. I know once a Nigerian girl with dark complexion won Miss world competetion. However, it depends on who is in the judge's seat. in Indian society, the women are the biggest enemy of women as far as the dark complexion is concerned. For a marriage of their son, the women in the family will first to object for a dark complexioned girl. It is the mentality of our society prevailing since more than 5000 years ago. It has no relation with British rule.

Just remember our ancestors are from Africa...so stop sweating about it
It is mostly a media creation. Our movies and our advertisers have shown fair skin to be a desirable objective. We see very little movies in which the heroine is dark or brown, even though, according to the script, she is an orphan growing up in a slum! The media has to be pressurised to underplay the prominence given to fair skin. But who will bell the cat?
