How to evaluate a Student?
by sukumar on Jun 30, 2009 06:17 PM

10 th standard
--------------
1. Upto 9th standard a student would have learned and explored different subjects. In 10th standard, he /she must choose 3 subjects
of their choice and 2 subjects as their ancillary subjects. In total 5 papers.
2. Examination will be held on the subjects they have chosen anytime during that year. We must have 3 differnt types of exam papers
Low, Medium and High. A student can choose the exam type and take up their exam anytime during that year.
3. During the year each student should have options to change their subjects. (atleast in the first six months)
11th standard
--------------
1. We must allow students to choose more subjects or they must be allowed to proceed further with the same subjects.
2. Advance education on the subjects should be taught the stduents.
3. They must also work on thesis papers and lot of group discussion should happen.
4. Again they can take exams anytime in the year. They can choose the exam type. we can give 3 tries if not we can evaluate a student based
on the exam that he/she passed.
12 th Standard
---------------
1. We must allow students apply what they learned in 10th & 11th with real time scenarios.
2. We need to have project work atleast 6 months and team discussion often throughout the year.Focus should be given on developing communication,
interpersonal,analytical and techincal skills.

How to evaluate a Student?
by sukumar on Jun 30, 2009 06:17 PM

We need to grade a student based on their 10th,11th and 12th performance on the exams they take and their difficulty levels
they had cleared.

The grading a student should include

1. Their analytical & techinical abilities 2. Interpersonal Skills 3. Their Discipline 4. Their individual skills 5. Knowledge on the subjects
6. Communication 7. Their innovations etc.

Exams for each type(low, medium, high) must be transparent to the students.

College Admissions
------------------
This should be based on student's grade and the subjects they have specialized in 10th,11th and 12th. No reservations.
1 & 2nd year
------------
1. They must learn all the technical theories on the chosen field.

3rd & 4th year
-------------
1. Each student must come up with an innovation and this should be the main factorin deciding the grades
2. They must in a industry during their 4th year and they must accountable for their work during that time.Students must be paid for this by the employers.
3. Employer has to provide a report about the student which should be considered during the grading process.

Once a student clears the above education he/she will be fully equipped for the real world.

Scrapping Class X board exams is a welcome move
by rajesh dalal on Jun 30, 2009 06:06 PM  | Hide replies

It's welcome move for all those who desired that indian future student have to be dull. Grading is good system to judge for progress within the same study line. However, at certain age when selection has to be made, obviously disclosing marks is important.Think of scenario that if there are 840 "A" grade students applying for particular course, where there is capacity to teach only 420 students, whom will u give admission?. Will it be On basis of name or date of birth or caste, because all of this are beyond child control. Say if it's on basis of name than will AAshwin will be different from Ashwin ? Funny isn't. Child birth date / day because that date day can not be plan. Is it on basis of caste, which is just co-incidence no one plan to born in particular caste, then when to be proud of it or feel shy of it. All this issues are raise by politiciation, who can't not improve our rupee value in the world. Which should be our priority, which can be achieved only by competative students appearing , passing and developing competative spirit and achievement in various field. Why not think of grade in sports ruther than runs. Why not grade in life rather than age. Why not grade in voting rather than actual number of vote. Let all of us concentrate in improving rupee value which among the last 10 in world.

Dear Rajesh, Grading system in western countries works in such a way that , 'A' grade means demonstrating critical thinking, ability to apply knowledge to real problems, having wider reading (not just text books) and excellent communication. By default, less than 10% students fall in this category and can achieve 'A' grade throughout in all subjects. Also, admissions depend on individual preferences and real liking of children rather than pressure from parents or peer students! Some specific institutes can carry out their own assessments. Schools are there to teach general knowledge and various life skills, not for making doctors and engineers. A 15/16 years student with B grade should be confident enough to do anything. This is why teenager entrepreneurs are common in Western countries while Indians worry about getting good jobs!

Education is a tree whose roots are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.
If you want the roots to be less bitter, then remember that the fruit will also be less sweeter.

Please remember "Learning is joy and should be joy". TO make it sweeter, we are trying. You are trying to sustain the bitter created by our earlier generation for clerical jobs.

Examination
by asif zaman on Jun 30, 2009 05:52 PM

Dear All,
It seems that some learned people are after examination policy which is an indicator between those who should improve in their studies and those who are ready to face further challenges. I do not under stand the so called learned who are after quota system and wants it implemented in knowledges centers also. Today no examination in the 10 Std next in the 12 std and might be in medical and engineering also so what did the past generation do wrong when their were examination? are they not fit enough to under stand what the politicians wants or the elite educated group want????

Grading system
by Bharatwasi on Jun 30, 2009 05:41 PM  | Hide replies

Grading system can be very fair indeed. People should change their mindset that exams are doors for admissions in better colleges. Grades work as effectively as any other marking system. Most importantly they provide a better judgement. For example, best world universities require every student to have individual critical thinking (not ready made answers). They try to ensure that no two answers within the class match with each other and student writes answers with his/her own wordings (not from textbooks or tuition notes). Grade for each question/assignment is based on whether the student can demonstrate that he understood the topic. For example, a "Good" grade means the student has understood the topic and written logically flawless (not necessarily ideal) answer. "Excellent/Outstanding" grade means the student has shown individual insight and critical thinking in answering that question. A "Marginal Pass" grade means the answer is acceptable but has some factual errors and student needs more reading. "Fail" grade means student has not understood the topic and requires more efforts there. Final grade for a subject is calculated based on average of individual grades accumulated. Finally when you look at "A" grade student, that student is brilliant and can excel in his/her chosen field. In India, the exams are rat races and students don't even understand why they want to become eng/doctors? Even meritorious students don't use imaginations and creative thinking!

Re: Grading system

Fundamentally, the problem is with the way exams are taken! In Western schools, children are not bogged down by study. They are encouraged to explore and learn things from experience, make imaginations, communicate with people in real life situations. Students gradually pick up necessary knowledge as they grow. But, what is important is they learn to do their tasks and solve problems without other's help. In India, everyone is in a race right from the first year (sorry from pre-nursery)! Parents, teachers, coaching classes try to spoon-feed every student and become upset when they don't do it. India's education is limited to textbooks only. This is what I really expect from 15/16 year old student:
1. Have basic knowledge of various subjects. But it is important that the student are able to apply that knowledge and solve real problems. With age only the complexity of problems increases and more knowledge is required.
2. Have basic knowledge of current affairs, local and world politics and understands global issues. It is important that every student has his/her own views/opinions about various topics.
3. Ability to communicate effectively with everyone and learning "how to listen?" (Most Indians think of good communication means ability to speak in American accent).

For this, the exams need to be changed. In India, exams are treated as an hurdle to get admission to eng/med colleges. This mindset needs to change. Let them become artist, sports persons or whatever they like.

I like most of your view. If the individual wants to assess himself/herself can take the exams. But the exams should not be from the text books of that year. Even 5th or 6th standard maths too can be tested. Then only we can find out the understanding of the student on subjects. It should assess the learning upto certain level, not a specific year alone.

Scrapping of X exams
by vijay jadhav on Jun 30, 2009 05:35 PM  | Hide replies

Sir,

Scrapping of X exam is not a wise decision, first you have to survey and get decision of parents and the Students . As per my knowledge scrapping X exams spoils childrens future, due to which students take their studies casually and childerens studing hard and capable students have to suffer.

Learning should be enjoyed. It is not "Tapas". With the hard work so far, what do we have with us now? Any contribution to science? ( I heard one joke y'day : One intelligent guy got permission from UNGC to have a study on Astrology to cure for cancer )
