Do you think in big schools only marks are a criteria? They are already playing their money game. You need money to gain entry into big schools. If we dont have, even if our kids are brilliant, there isn't a lot that we can do. So lets not worry about rich-undeserving kids getting in, we cannot stop them anyways. Concentrate on waht we need to do for our kids. Be happy our kids wont be as stressed as we were. if not exams, there will be other ways of non-stressful assessments.

board exams put tremendous pressure
by Tadaham on Jul 01, 2009 11:54 AM

No doubt..
But nothing compared to pressure the comming generations will face from kids from the developed world, developing world and China.
Earlier, you could do whatever you wanted..
But now even US is aware of the pitfalls.
One wrong move and our future will be doomed.
We do not want to raise our kids as sissies.

Harish, For those born after 26-01-1989, SSC certificates will no longer be considered as proofs of DOB. Birth certifcates are mandatory. I have noticed this rule being followed by passport office but i guess as other departments are also following it.

Very good move by Kapil Sibal (going to be another legend like Kapil Dev).
Exams are nothing but memory power getting translated into written form, on which assessment of a student is made. Ideally, the system should promote inherent talent - whether it be in academics - arts - sports or any other talent and grade given accordingly. Let them further develop their talent at higher education institutes or universities. Make all children have opportunity for all round development so that when he comes out of the institute, he is useful for himself and fit to be a member of the civilised society.
I never had the opportunity for higher education just because I performed poorly in sanskrit and what use is Sanskrit language in this increasingly english speaking nation ?
I should ideally have sued the concerned government then - but then gain what use ?

clever attempt by sibal to get votes in 2014.
by panini on Jul 01, 2009 11:04 AM  | Hide replies

it is a shrewd move by sibal to garner votes of the young voters who think exams are a burden on them. he is a cunning person who has nothing to do with the interests of the nation. all he is concerned with is creating the vote-bank for 2014 polls.

Introducing "GRADE SYSTEM" in 10th exams is a good thing while retaining the % system in 12th.

In fact, these exams make Indians more competitive than their counterparts in USA & west. Removing the exams will divert the students attention towards other non-productive things & will ultimately destroy the competitive edge the Indians have over other students worldwide.

This is all politics. 100% correct. I share the same views as panini. Students who feel that exams are burden then they hv no future in their life.

Class X board Exams
by Firelite on Jun 30, 2009 11:22 PM

I agree with the proposed changes. However this is the first step towards the complete overhaul of the system. Today we have too may streams of education such as CBSE, Matriculation, Anglo-Indian, Stateboard etc. This was ok till last decade where the workforce was not moving across the country on work assignments. But now it is more dynamic workforce which looks for and takes up oppurtunitiy across the country and world. In the new system the syllabus to all main stream subjects should be same and with english as first language and local regional lanugage as second language. This will allow the students to move across the country without much difficulty. By doing away with 10th final exams students can have more overall assesment during the whole year, where there will be marks for every day homework and class projects and this allows the students to gain more practical knowledge instead of reading for exams.

its a mistake
by bharat singh on Jun 30, 2009 07:33 PM

we r today seeing a period when the youth is taking to drugs, forgetting the values of morality, hard work, persistence...
so would it be right to remove exams ??
rather we shall work towards improving the education system and freeing it of rot learning and also provide proper counselling to the students and their parents also on how to cope with exam pressure which students have to face anyways maybe a little later!!!
