Do not go to earn money .
by Naresh Sharma on Jun 07, 2009 04:11 PM  | Hide replies

A majority of student come to Australia for getting PR and earn money.Australia should not give PR to any foreign national just like in Arab Countries.Come ,earn and live as much you want and go back to your own country.Indian mentality is to get PR only .On study visa ,they got points and can easily migrate.Australia should ban this PR.Only white collar job visa should be given,

From a friend in Australia
by Saba Pathy on Jun 04, 2009 11:46 AM  | Hide replies

Hi All,

I am staying in Sydney for quite some time and I would like to share few thoughts regarding recent attacks. These incidents have been happening for many years and are considered “common” but since the victim (Shravan Kumar, a 25 year old Andhra Student) in this case is in a life and death situation it has been highlighted.

Many of us call it “A Shame” and a very disturbing as well annoying to hear about racist attacks here in Australia. We Indians and other Asians staying in Australia sometimes fear to use public transport during late nights as you never know what kind of people may approach you.

But the fact is I don’t find all Australians racist, most of them are very nice human beings, very helpful and wonderful people. About recent attacks I would like to say it is the work of no-hopers, who roam over public places during off peak hours for a cigarette or for some money to buy drugs. There are incidents where few people come directly and demand for money and in some cases even when victim give them money they still beat them up. There are also few incidents when a person is drawing money at the ATM and a voice comes from behind saying draw more and give it to me otherwise you will be in danger. Indian houses are usually targeted because we have gold and jewellery and I believe they have tracking devices to locate gold in the house, but these happen in any country and I strongly believe that it is not racist.

Supreetha

Your very mature and balanced views based on personal experience will no doubt go a long way in reassuring at least some of the Indians who are already there in Australia!

But these highly racist incidents of brutal assaults on Indians will deter most of the new aspirants who had plans of studying/working there.

I am sure if simialr things were to be done to the Australian students/workers in India, the things would have been adjudged differently by one and all.

As a north Indian, I have experienced racism in Chennai. The auto driver demanded double the fare because I did not know Tamil. Why blame Australia?

Boss, u guys have this distrust mentality. Auto drivers in chennai are cheats by and large and don't follow the metre readings and always take advantage if u are not from that place. It has got nothing to do with u being a north indian or me being a south indian and has got nothing to do with racism. I live in kolkata and even now whenever i visit chennai i always ask my sister there what the fare wd be from one place to another otherwise i wd end up being fleaced!

Being a Chennaite, I have experienced similar situations when I was in various places in North India. The problem is with the attitude of individuals. I know many north indians who think themselves they are superior to south indians without any reason. May be the geography ? or the complexion ? I agree there could be such things from south indians too, though I havent heard anything so far. Let's forget this intra-country racism and concentrate on useful things.

Nothing racial .It is part of auto drivers culture in chennai to demand/beg for additonal fare beyond the metre fare.I face it every time i visit chennai and if you complain to police he would just turn his back to you.I have been told by local residents that most of auto's are benami holdings of those who are supposed to protect you from fleecing.
This obviously is the biggest blot on chennai faced by any visitor and we do not know when will it end.

Two wrongs do not make one right!

You might the same experience as Chennai in Calcutta or even Bombay!

But this does not justify murderous attacks in Australia or other foreign lands.

I was in Australia as a tourist last month before this issue became a headline. I could clearly sense Racist attitude in austrailians against us. Even in tourist place like Gold-coast locals had this feeling thought their livelihood depends upon foreigners/tourists.
At first I was surprised as I have travailed most of Europe/NA. But then I realised & could relate it to their behaviour on the field.

Most of the guys who got hit were doing such jobs and our media was just encouraging such news...like taxi driver will always be hit.why dont u take how much such happens in uk..it happens they dont report...cause this is quite common no one blames that it was rascist attack.and most of the guys are really taxi driver mentality ..i mean they cant speak english ..it is a shame u will get slapped mugged dont blame australians then..if u cant speak ur easy victim ..it is the rule of the jungle when there are robbers sitting near by..and our media like aholes will be sitting and telling ..yup rascism rascism..bla bla ..they sharma who attacked was hit by a dark guy..some black guy actually ..that was never highlighted by indian media why /?
just to waste our time and mood ?or just to affect peoples feeling and do a lot more time pass.?

double edged sword
by abhijit ashitbaran on Jun 04, 2009 11:43 AM

Its lot to do with the Indian way of thinking and the way we have been raised by our parents... having said that most of Indian students come from a middle class and upper middle class monerty wise. quite obvious... we try to save first and then spend... we will forecast 2 months of expenses and spend acoordingly to whatever we earn/have. We avoid take money from our parents. Our first goal will be to pay-off loan amount asap.
Because of these reason, Indians are termed wealthy in foreign country... There are incidents where in Indians are robbed We put that extra effort to earn money, take up jobs at late nights hence more exposed to robbers/druggies who are nocturnal.
There were many cases where in a student was beaten so brutally becuause he did'nt want to pay 1 dollar. I remember he was from punjab and he was badly beaten by a group of 16 ppl including girls, his left eye was badly injured... he had to leave for India soon... Reading this article our blood were frozen
Living overseas is always a double edged sword... We cannot predict about anything even if we want to take care... We come here to earn money lead a good life ignoring all these danger...

I have also read in some blogs about Indians attitude and talking overloudly in our desi language is not liked by foreigners... But its the same behaviour observed with other races as well... when a chineses meets a chinese they will be talk in chinese language so are other race ppl... its same case with italian/rus

Overhyped Issue
by Global on Jun 04, 2009 09:31 AM  | Hide replies

The Indian media should stop this nonsense. This issue is being overplayed in India and by the Indian students in Australia. I am an Indian and lived in Australia for 10 years and have never had issues living in this country. In fact I have been discrimated against more in India than anywhere else. Life here is great and peaceful. Is there racism in Australia? Probably yes but it is restricted to a very small minority of Australians. A bunch of village idiots from India who have nothing better to do have landed here in Australia and are causing more trouble than they can imagine. These students need to reflect at their own behaviour and attitude first before pointing the finger at others. Take a quick glance at any Indian student on the trains or trams and you will know how out of place they are with their language, attidude, social and communication skills.

Very convenient
by Shagun Varma on Jun 04, 2009 09:29 AM  | Hide replies

Its convenient for everybody to condemn and rally for Indians being attacked in a foreign country. What about indians being attacked in india, like in bombay, where they were trying to purge people from UP/Bihar? Not one person has been arrested or convicted. If we cant set out own standards and protect our own people in our country, why do all this drama about Indians getting abused in foreign lands?

you must understand that it is more serious than being attacked in our own country. We are a minority there and are more vulnerable and lack representation unlike in INdia. In other words there is no leverage of any sort that people have there.

Indian attitude
by Dinesh R on Jun 04, 2009 09:14 AM  | Hide replies

So why do these thugs target indians only and not any other community. Because they feel indians are a soft target and there is no punishment for attacking them. INdians live like rats in Australia. They have accepted racist comments and discrimination as a way of life. It is the very familiar chalta hai attitude. It is only when the attacks have assumed this violent nature that they have actually stood up

Yaar student log.Tum log yahan aate ho padhte likhte to kuch ho nahin.Aaj kal student aa rahe hein cooking me,pastry making, hair dressing me,plumbing, mechanic courses. They are not coming here to study they are just coming here for PR.Misusing this facility. What do you need to study in making a pastry,ya palak paneer banane me kya padhoge mere dost?,they shouldnt be called students.
As soon as they complete grade 12 they take admission in Diploma in Cake Making 2 year course, they dont have exposure nor any social skills at this stage. They come to Australia straight from village without even seeing any Indian City.
Then they start making trouble here, they buy new laptop and best Mobile Phone on EMI(kiston par mere dost) as soon as they arrive in Australia, coz they never had a chance in India, companies finance they on their 2 year Visa.Even if they are going to public Toilet they will carry their laptop and mobile phone.
They will board train in a group of 10 12 guys thinking its their bail gadi, abe idhar aa udhar jaa..are is gori ko dekh..abe mein gori ke paas baithonga....like junglies.
They work at nights coz during the day they go to so called Colleges for making cake.Akele mil jaate hein raat me laptop, mobile phone, ipod(sub kiston waala),sub loot lete hein chor.

They are just spoiling India's Image here. These idiots have hijacked the image of real students who are here to study doing MBA's Masters,Bachelors and PHD and are decent guys and never had any problesm here.

Well said MIK..... i live in Australia for last 10 years and and travelled over 28 countries.... u are absolutely right....

These attacks or on studenst only ..no indian businesses targeted ...no india seniro citizens targeted, no indian coprorates targeted...all happened on students who carry expensive items and want to make their presense felt among Australians.

If its racist upon indians then there are indian people of all ages groups..

Do not come for PR...just come for studies..Aim for atleast 60% attendence.. the govt says 80% attendance must ... I doubt it really is the case....

most of the people who pass comments have never been to Australia...seen how Indians co-exist with Australians in peaceful manner... they are getting agitated seeing the Indian Media.
