these attacks are common
by Dev on Jun 04, 2009 05:29 AM  | Hide replies

such attacks are always happening in oz..its a common occurrence.normally happening to ozzies but nowadays also to indians , bcos there are lot of indians in melbourne (45,000)
ofcourse there is racism in oz but it is not a huge issue. it is definitely less than in other gora countries. it is difficult to get into good jobs, in pubs and restaurants there is a problem sometimes, problem in beaches etc. but otherwise it is quite ok.
students have to learn self-defense, be careful in trains & train stations-this is place where most attacks are happening.

Bhai Guru, aur kitne baar ye dalit message ko paste karte rahega? See in India that was a big problem before independence and still a problem. But we made huge progress on the issue. We have/had a president, chief justice, speaker and many people in posts of power from those communities. Can you say the same about your adopted country? Can you ever imagine an aboriginal becoming a PM?

Anyway why do you want to compare with a third world country and justify the acts of the people in your developed country?
Not all are racist, most are very friendly, but to say there is no problem and to justify based on what happens in another country is wrong.

Is Australia a Racist Country ?
by Som Majumdar on Jun 04, 2009 05:00 AM

No, I don't think so . . let us think for a moment in cool mind free of any preconceived notion. I have watched in the TV when both Prime Minister and the Leader of Opposition spoke in unison condemning this brutal attack to the Indian students and confirming serious action to be taken against the perpetrators. Both the leaders categorically praised the Indian community living in Australia acknowledging their immense contribution to the nation and making a statement that the Indian students and the members of Indian dissent living in Australia are the guests of the country. The Rudd Government has recently established a Task Force comprising with very senior officials from Police, Immigration, Dept. of Education and Foreign Affairs to address the issue. Five or six culprits have already been apprehended. These unfortunate attacks were committed by young people of 17 to 18 years of age that are mainly an after effect of alcohol drugs etc and not certainly out of racism. I am living in Sydney for last 23 years and I am a lecturer with a premier University in Sydney where thousands of Indian students are studying and I have had the opportunity of talking to them. I personally have never had any such experience nor my friends or other known Indians in Sydney. Can we touch our heart and say that such types of incidents are not taking place in Goa, Bihar, Delhi etc?? Are we not discriminating against the Harijans, Adivasis in India? Let the wise counsel prevail - Som Majumdar

Australia is a real convict country...
by Pradeep Raajkumar on Jun 04, 2009 02:49 AM  | Hide replies

I am an International student from POllachi-Coimbatore(Billu Barber and Virasat movie shooting spot)finishing my final year in Melbourne Australia-Melbourne Institute of technology wasted lots of money for 2 years without part time job availability
Australian government is the worst..They cover up all their issues when it comes to international maters.
Australian police and they govt sys are useless. There is no Newton's 3rd law here for crime
There is no concession for train-tram ticket, dental, eyes, general health check up etc including the security.Students are like ATM machine here.
Australia is a confirmed racist country..
Please say NO to Australia..
Indians are like clowns here..

I strongly disagree with you. I have been living in australia for the past 6 yrs finished my studies and working now. I condemend the attacks on indian students and agree there is racism in australia but tell me one country in the world which is not racist. India is more racist than australia. We still don’t allow certain people in our houses and north india is not acceptable to south indian and vice versa.
Next time you go to india, try living in mumbia or bihar and see if they accept you with open arms.

About your problem, y the hell did u select MIT, did u not get admission in any good uni in melbourne. There are parts time jobs if you are willing to slog, that is part and parcel of international student life which builds your character. Why should the govt give concenssion for your health, does the indian hospital give you free health check if you are indian citizen. OZ govt does give concenssion for australian citizen and permanent residents all these things. Grow up man, stop finding fault with the country. If you can't survive in australia i don't think u can survive in india as well. And indians are not clown in australia , maybe your a lazy clown. Atleast the police in australia are not corrupt like the ones back home. Govt is useless , are you out of your mind, compare them with karuna and jaya you have back home, you will know who is useless.

you have only been there for 2 years..it takes 5 yrs to get adapted to oz.
have u read overseas ppl's opinion of India ?? almost all condemn it.
yes, oz is very difficult for new entrants but ask any person how they feel about oz after they live there for 5 years.
even if you ask any oz student, he will feel just like you. it is quite difficult for them ,too. they take HECS loan and have to pay it. But once if you get chance to earn money in f/time job , then everything should usually be ok.
just also remember oz is a competitive co.,it is not like india. there are 100s of nationalities in oz.

by gopi on Jun 04, 2009 02:37 AM  | Hide replies

I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with the Australia police when i was robbed on my last visit to Australia and found them to be very racist with them treating me very badly. The police has not accepted that this attacks are racist as it suits them. Till the Australian Government reforms the police no change with take place and such attacks will continue

What can you expect from a colony of criminal convicts? I feel for you. Coming back to India may not be an option for some (due to various reasons). I hope you can get away from there to a better place where there is no racism or casteism.

It's general crime
by Ponting Punter on Jun 04, 2009 01:34 AM

I dont think this is an issue of racism. It's a general crime and most of the victims are Indians. FYI, many developed countries have worst criminal record than India.

For example, the small states like Pennsylvania has more crimes than any bigger state in India. You have to learn living with that.

I dont see any issue of racism here.
