Not a good idea
by Teesmar Singh on Jul 07, 2009 05:42 PM  | Hide replies

It is not a good idea to do away with board exams upto class Tenth. I myself appeared in board exams for class 5, class 8 , class 10 and then class 12th. I did not feel any more stress than a normal exam.
The benefit with board exams is that a student takes his study seriously. and if he does not, he is eliminated. He can have more chances in coming years. But certainly removing board exams will only increase pass percentage and many below average students will get above average marks due to kindness of school teachers.
Why do we want our study level cheaper?

The main reason why students are under stress is there are around 30 odd decent engineering colleges for over a million aspirants. Removing 10th or 12th board exam wouldn't reduce their stress by any margin.

Scrap Class X exam
by bienu vaghela on Jul 07, 2009 05:37 PM

I think it will be a great gift to this generation of evaluating a student just by virtue of his/her score. Their skills/ talents have no place in the education system which is big drawback in the system. If a student doesn't fare well in class X exam he has to go through so much humiliation. He is declared good for nothing. But yes then syllabus has to be streamlined, methodology has to be worked out so that students do not take class X exam for granted. Appearing for class xii board will provide them maturity and it will certainly help. The move will be good but execution will be an issue which Mr. Sibal needs to look into. I salute Mr. Sibal for such revolutionery thought but it needs a special task force in education to put into place as this has been done ages and it will be very difficult to deviate. Bienu

evaluation
by Shashikant Magdum on Jul 07, 2009 05:29 PM  | Hide replies

existing schooling pattern needs a change, this does not mean srapping of exam. Evaluation only through SSC exam is a joke now. When these students enter world of competetion many individuals are not aware of skills possessed by them. They are in " unconscious Incompetency Zone" while professional world needs candidates in " Unconscious Competency Zone". I hardly came across any such evaluation at school level to that matter even in colleges. All educational experts should work on this for better future under given political & social system of reservation & quotas.

The solution to the growing problems of a diverse Indian population with competitive and harsh educational system at school is to LEGALIZE Home Schooling Education System in India, just like in the US.

why average of clas 8th, 9th 10th
by Chanakya on Jul 07, 2009 05:29 PM

scrapping of board exam for 10th is a wecome move. But, as rightly said in the article, it takes away the freedom of selecting specialised subjects for 11th and 12th for a career path. An idea worth considerable is having an exam for 10th in which a particular percentage of average of 8th and 9th final percentages (and 10th prilims) should be added. Upon passing the 10th, the stuident should be given the opportunity to select specialised subjects for 11th and 12th and go ahead with the board exams accordingly. This will not only do away with a board exam for 10th but also provide the opportunity to the student to focus of specialised subjects and get ahead with a particular degree course after the 12th.
what say?

class XI exams
by Guest on Jul 07, 2009 05:28 PM

The very thought scrapping XI exams and making it optional is a welcome one. These board exams merely reflect the students memory power more than their grasping powers. Exams are needless infact, students should be assessed periodically every now and then sincerely and given grades according to their abilities rather than conducting useless board exams and asking them to memoriase and giving their marks whether they are really worthwhile or not. An average student who may be more studious than those who score higher marks due to this memorisation pattern stands top of the world whereas the real studious students are at the far below. The real assessments has to be done periodically in the class rooms and then given grade at the end of the schooling accordingly.

These board exams really do not speak of anything at all. The most repeat the most academically brilliant students in schools do not actually fare well after schooling and fail miserably whereas the average but studious students excell after schooling.

It is worthwhile to scrap all kinds of board exams and conduct the capacity of the students every now and then during the whole schooling and the students be given grades according to their merit in total finally- that would be the real grading rather than giving marks in one or two board exams and assessing him or her is totally a wrong method.

Optional means No Choice
by Tathagat on Jul 07, 2009 05:20 PM

I don't think that will help the cause..
Nobody likes to give exams..
An interim exam like that in 10th class is essential to gauge the level of the student and also to prevent the discrimination that often takes place in the schools..
In fact, I would suggest that since we consider a person who has studied till 5th to be literate, why not keep an exam for the 5th class, so that the knowledge level of the student is judged impartially..

why not keep it optional?!
by Naya Tazataza on Jul 07, 2009 05:07 PM  | Hide replies

why not keep it optional?! whosoever wish to take the exam may take it, & those who don't wish can go according to the policy being framed by Sibbal. after all, a student at the age of 15, definitely can think what is best for him(/her).
