looks like a good idea but India is never known for equality
by delguy on Jul 08, 2009 12:43 PM

so all states agreeing for one syllabus would be something like asking a tamil about his/her national language(not to speak but just to to recognise). But anyway something has to be done so fix the syllabus on central level, with few language options.

I agree 100%

I agree with this idea - our education system not only needs a complete overhaul (away from creating clerks for the erstwhile British Raj), it needs to be centralized also with an intent to create more 'INDIAN-NESS' rather than what is happening now - people are getting more & more regionalized - one's own state, religion, caste etc. is everything and the country be damned. I believe starting off children with the idea of being INDIAN would be a step in the right direction.

standard of students at risk
by SR Prefabs on Jul 08, 2009 12:17 PM  | Hide replies

with the existing system the standard of the students from india is high compared to all the other students all over the world. with growing westernization emphasis on quality education will be lost. Please dont do this. sraping is a bad idea. May be introduction of grading maintaining the status will be better

I agree with this view entirely.

Most of us who have an advanced degree from the US universities will testify to the fact that the grind of the present day eductional system until the Intermediate level is what has helped us sail through life in flying colors. Many times, rote learning is required and essential when the brain is able to remember things. Otherwise, we will end up in a situation where a kid will say, he will refer a book to answer - 'what is your name?'.

Can anyone tell me how they will be able to sail through higher education if all that is needed to know is only in the 'pusthak' and very little is in the 'masthak'?

God forbid, tomorrow, some hare-brained politician will come up with the hypothesis to prove with statistics with 5% confidence level that 'by-hearting math tables' is the root cause of so much stress and will do away with the requirement that children should know math tables by rote - and we will end up where the classical American kid is, who needs a calculator to punch 2x2 to get the answer 4. It is unfortunate that we have given the reins of this country into the hands of individuals who are well past their prime to 'think' correctly - what is good for the country and what is bad.

our stand testimony to the fact that we were able to ace

The solution to the growing problems of a diverse Indian population with competitive and harsh educational system at school is to LEGALIZE Home Schooling Education System in India, just like in the US.

Allowing countrywise access to admissions is impractical
by pradeep agarwal on Jul 07, 2009 05:43 PM

The nation needs education that allows children learning in relaxed environment. The idea to let exam be mace optional will let less blessed to learn & others to compete. The current system encourages many who are not confident of doing well in board exams to flung the schools. It is however' not possible after 60 yrs to centralize the education which incidentally was brainchild of congress & country is paying price for that in form of regional imbalances.
