Why does rediff publish such foolish articles ?
by Harsh Gupta on Nov 20, 2006 02:26 PM  | Hide replies

Certainly, everyone knows that MBA is not the end of the world, nor is it the "only" way to earn 6 figure salaries. But, what everyone also knows is that MBA(specially from IIMs, XLRI, FMS etc.) is the "fastest" way to earning 6 figure salaries - atleast, in the current context of India, with it's booming economy and severe shortage of "quality" managers. This is the reason why some 200000+ students had battled CAT 2006.

Friend perhaps you are right that IIMS give a perfect platform for the six figures salary but ever wondered why so many high fliers quite their jobs for a less paying but satisfying job.Its not the money that is important, its the quality of work you do that matters and its your own goals that define your career plan.
Money is perhaps the last thing you would think of once you are have been working for some 3-4 years.

CAT is not the end of the world...
by vaibhav on Nov 20, 2006 02:26 PM

Number of people who gave CAT this year: 1,90,000
Number of seats: 1900
So that means 1 out of 100 students cracks the exam. Getting frustrated is of no use...most of the students do not crack it. There are lots of other options in the world like MAT, or maybe u can go abroad, etc. What i believe is: it does matter which institute you r doing mba from to a certain extent. After that, its all your knowledge and experience that counts. So dont lose heart, there are numerous options available.

The only difference between a IIM and a non- IIM candidate is : when you are in IIM, you need to choose the employer, coz they already know who you are, and when you are not in IIM, you have to prove yourself. And if you believe yourself, if you believe in your abilities, i dont see any reason why you cant get a good job later.

Joining management without an MBA
by Tanushree on Nov 20, 2006 02:18 PM

I majored in english literature from a reputed college and after graduation, there was a lot of pressure for me to do an MBA. But I received an offer from an MNC in advertising and today I am project lead. All this without an MBA but with hard work and interest in what I do.:)
Plus, my manager has seven years of experience without an MBA but she is part of top management today!

I am not made by the IIMs
by Anonymous on Nov 20, 2006 01:53 PM

Hi,

I have failed the CAT exam thrice. I put in a lot of efforts as though it was the end of my life. I religously put in 4hours of study for everyday of those three years....and yet, I did not get a call from IIMs.

I can tell you the actual split of study hours, the number of Mock CATs I took, the number od coaching institutes that I went and also the CAT papers and what happens?? I will get a long list of post mortems....
What went wrong?
How should I deal with it?
Where should I concentrate?
Fine..

I have done MCom (Finance) from a university. I have got a lucrative job in a MNC and was happily playing the role of a Financial Analyst for International Stock Markets for a year. I was trying hard to bridge the difference between an "MBA" and a "MCom". And today, I am a Risk and Compliance officer for UK stock markets. I work on MiFID and Basell II (the most coveted areas in Finance and Banking).

I travel abroad for 20days in a month on a project.

I am also involved in project management...

And all this.....without an IIM...

CAT..2.5 hours decides your life..!! ha ha ...a joke
by Rakesh on Nov 20, 2006 01:23 PM

Hi,
Congrats to the prospective IIMites and, some food for thought for those who have not made it !
Like how Gayathri Bhanusekar puts it, It is not the end of Life. Moreover if you cant take the failure of the CAT, will that be a quality of a manager ? Some of the greatest managers and leaders India have produced are not from the IIMs. The best example would be Laloo, who without an MBA(Forget the IIMs..!!) could really defraud the public through the Fodder Scam and also turn the Railways into A Profit making Zones. Narayana Murthy,Ambanis,Vijay Mallya .Arent....these examples sufficient enough to prove that CAT is not that decides your life...
The only advice is, people who make it big, believe in the power of visualization , desperation and urge to make it big. These are the essentialities required from the biggest business man in the world to the richest beggar in the Mumbai city.

CAT & IIMs only option?
by Prof R K Gupta on Nov 20, 2006 12:39 PM  | Hide replies

The IIMs are a part of a networkim of Alumni,MNCs and some vested interests to keep the hype alive about them.Only there entrance is tough.IT is tough becasue it is built mirrationally, fixinf too less time and giving long passages to answer.
I am not sure what the CAT aims at testing.
Secondly even if we agree that mentally more allert and analytical minds get through it, the syllabus of IIMs has nothing novel or great. It is general syllabus for business adminustration.
What makes IIMs look attractive is placements which take place than ks to the above mentioned network.

We have another view to it which has serious social deimensions.hear burning has already started and now IAS and ciivl services are demandingn drastic hanges in salaries and perquisites.Other lesser companies also have to shell out more. These have infaltionary tendencies.By no stretch of imagination a fresh graduate having doen a course merits a wage of Rs 5 lacs per annum in India where average per capita earning is only Rs 25,000/,Most brilliant cant give value as much as that.Any management graduate from any scholl can do that job may littkle inferior way.

We must arrest this madness.CAT is RACKET
