I hope not...
by Sudipto Ghosh on May 19, 2009 01:10 AM

I hope the likes of Arjun Singh with his caste dividing attitude do not come to the cabinet again.
Firstly his decision of quota in higher education DEFIED LOGIC altogether.
Secondly I am not sure what he would be upto next perhaps have a quota for all Indian students studying in US or UK universities???
I think age has crept up on him and he has played cheappolitics just seeking votes from a certain so-called backward classes!!

You don't want to waste your best performer for a nonexecutive role.

Shivraj Patil should be made Speaker again. At least, no ministry will have to suffer from his incompetence.

rediff management take notice
by Sameer on May 19, 2009 12:57 AM  | Hide replies

I want this to the notice of rediff management that this renu mittal is talking very loose about a particular caste 'Thakur'. She seems very frustrated because of OBC quota. At least rediff should not allow writer to write such articles.
I expect you to not publish such articles which use derogatory language towards a community.
Thanking You.

Unnecessary alarm. Thakur, Jaat, Vanniyar, Lingayat, Kapu, Kurmi etc are all par for the course. Nobody means anything particularly against any caste. It's just social reality, and common parlance in those circles. Like the burnt, smoky flavor of naans!

Turn over
by Proloy Coomar Pramanik on May 19, 2009 12:50 AM  | Hide replies

Sonia can offer Arjun Singh the post of Leader of the Opposition by sending him as visiting leader to the BJP camp. They are anyway having trouble finding a replacement for Advani.

not nearly as a dearth of leadership in congress. now seriously, who dare talk about a congress high command without paying obeisance to gandhi family ?

the pm in his victory speech pleaded rahul to join the cabinet. which sane pm from any other nation do that ? that disgusting show of boot licking. sycophancy at its worst!

If he joins BJP, he will first have to sweep the rooms of its party offices. They don't give important positions to anyone walking over even if it is a Sonia Gandhi

Congress should sack all the poor performers
by Parth Mehta on May 19, 2009 12:48 AM  | Hide replies

Congress is enjoying sitting on a historic moment at this point in Indian politics. Such a clear mandate was not expected even by them. Now, as they have got it, it is high time first of all to dump political agents like Lalu, Mulayam, Paswan, Amar Singh who were just blackmailing Congress. Apart from that, Congress needs to grow in those states. The similar can be said about Maharashtra and Tamilnadu. Right now, Congress is in alliance with NCP and DMK but reliance on them should also be decreased in next election because ultimately Sharad Pawar and Karunanidhi are not much different from Lalus and Mulayams. Secondly, it comes to sacking their own people. I think some of the Congressmen performed horribly in the last government like A R Antulay, Arjun Singh, Shivaraj Patil (who was already sacked) and time has come when Congress needs to dump their own people who have not performed well. Country has given them a clear verdict and they have the best opportunity to serve people of India. This should not be missed in any case. Regardless of loyalty to the Gandhi family, if there is no performance, that Congressman must be removed without doubt. I think that will be more credible steps in eyes of people. Apart from that, Congress needs to develope more democratization within their own party and not just try to find solution of every problem in Madam Sonia or Rahul Baba. Dynasty rule can't be wiped out so easily but at least it should be made more palatable by democratization.

Lalu is actually a star performer of the previous government. Manmohan should keep him. Besides, he has got to know the inner workings of the Railways and formed the right relationships with the officers. Those things should not be allowed to go waste. Continuity is important. Getting an unknown hand in the business is unnecessarily risky. Besides, Mamata's own record as minister, either of Railways, or Sports earlier, has hardly been of any note. There is no point undoing all the good work. Lalu brings a lot of pragmatism to policy making as well, being down-to-earth, which should be useful in cabinet consultations.

Samajwadi Party should be accommodated for the sake of stability, with insistence on those with cleaner image, and with peripheral ministries. But this may not really work out.

Paswan too probably did a decent job last time.

The worst performers were as you mentioned: Shivraj Patil, Arjun Singh, Antulay, T.R.Baalu (of DMK), Shibu Soren etc.

Manmohan knows what to do, so long as he's allowed a free hand.

Arjun
by Lal Popat on May 19, 2009 12:47 AM

has been one of the staunch supporters of Sonia specially during the time of Narshimha Rao and Kesri.

But there may be pressure from the Congressmen and so it might be time for him to gracefully retire.

He is very sharp guy and Sonia still consults him a lot though not publicly.

I Agree wholeeartedly with all that Arjun is a HEADACHE - BUT My question is why did the NATION have to SUFFER this illness (Arjun Singh) for the past 5 Years? - This only CONFIRMS that even the ALL-POWERFULL GANDHI Family is prone to BLACKMAIL !!! and such IDIOTS are made MINISTERS and the NATION made to SUFFER - while the POLITICAL bigwigs play CHESS in their drawing rooms with the CITIZENS of this nation as their 'PYADA'(Soldiers in the game of Chess)and the entire NATION as the chequer Board!!!!
