Redefining UPA
by AJ Kumar on May 19, 2009 08:28 AM

The need of the hour is that all the parties who have similar ideologies should merge and formally make a party called UPA and fight elections at state and center level. At least this way small party leaders have a chance of becoming a National Leader & PM. This will also not divide votes among same ideologies and stop the opposite ideology from win. Ultimately this will force other ideologies to stop divisive politics and ultimately start issue based politics in India.

re-righting BJP
by deep kaus on May 19, 2009 07:31 AM

I actually think the BJP didnt go right enough. It now needs to push for its political space that includes prolific and unconditional economic reforms plus hard-core nationalism, including a hard-line on terror kashmir 370 and UCC.

Election results and all that
by keshavmurthy k on May 19, 2009 06:53 AM

I voted for a Congress representative who lost the election to a BJP candidate not because I liked the candidate, but because I wanted Congress to come to power. I am glad this happened, and so handsomely! Now my wish is that the Congress makes a decent selection of its counsel of ministers. There are a whole lot of new faces eager and willing to lead the country, persons who have no "experience" but who have intellectual qualifications to do so. I have in mind persons like Sashi Tharoor, Pilot, young Deora, young Scindia, et al. There are also the 'experienced' Chidambarams and Kamal Naths. The Congress, like Obama did, should also consider good brains lying outside the Congress ideology and induct them into the cabinet for the sake of good governance. Jettison the laggards like Arjun Singh, Paswan, etc. My advise (I am old enough to advise) is take note of the serious comments posted in this blog, ignore the unimpartial observations and move on. Good luck to the new government.

usurp that centre space from the Congress
by floatsam on May 19, 2009 05:05 AM  | Hide replies

I have studied few papers of Mohit Sen in early 1980's; he was no centrist! Surely not in terms of political economy. Anyway, let us pass that.

But what is odd is this peculiar coy self-belief that dynastic Congress is Ok and NDA is not and that also Centre if owned by dynastic Congress alone.

Well BJP/NDA might relent you have your silly wish, for it is abstract and imaginary anyway. Here is what BJP is striving for, and dynastic Congress is not, it is not in their vision of agenda.

1. Create an economy in which all economic transactions shall take place within the crucible of law. (anything outside law is black money)

2. Implement I-card for all citizens in order to implement innovative financial instruments available for electronic banking and transfer government grants directly to needy recipients to remove poverty.

3. Build a consumer oriented genuine market economy and where the PSUs as well as dynastic oligopolies favoured by the dynastic Congress are fully corporatized by application of law facilitating such re-structuring.

Of far greater import that political economy aspect is the matters concerning Constitutionality. Re-centering would then mean that the political powers of the Central government get properly vested with the Prime Minister consistent with the spirit of Constitution. Any other arrangement would be non-centric and illegal.
