a vote for new dawn
by ashok paricha on May 18, 2009 01:45 PM  | Hide replies

It has become a habit of going gaga as soon as something contray to what was expected or feared has happened. All analysts are reading too much into the election results and say it was a vote for stability.I dont feel it is like that rather it is a fact that good governance and clean leaders with an intent to do better for people were preffered by the voters of India. If congress got benifitted it is largely because of courtesy of the left where in a platter they virtually surrendered their fort to congress or its allies.Think for a while-Orissa its Naveen Patnaik,M.P. its B.J.P.,CHATISGARH ITS BJP,KARNATAKA BJP,H.P. BJP.-ALL FOR CMS WHO PERFORMED.uTTARAKHAND NO PROGRESS HENCE kHANDURI WAS PUNISHED.bIHAR ITS nitish all the way as he did spectacular things.U.P. its bad autocratic governance, hence rejection of BSP and courtsey Mulayam -Kalyan axis which pushed Muslims to Congress.T.N. still gains Amma .Its all social restructuring and reengineering when Mayawati sweeps U.P. In assembly elections and prediction by sephologists that a new dawn has come.Nothing like that. Its a very well informed voter mass which prefers perfoming accountable un corrupt serious leaders be it regional or national party .Its definitely a new dawn where the voter has clearly made known his vision that perform or be destined to doom, for gods sake u all dont say a new leader has come and all those bla blas just keep silent .

Ashok ,
You have made some points which have absolutely no relation to what the article was about . My suggestion is please read the article once again .

As to your comments , yes developement pays . BJP performed misrably across most of hindi heartland exception being Bihar and chattisgarh . matter of fact is BJP would have suffered even more if Laloo ji hadnt foolishly decided to go with LJP only. if you put their vote share togeather , it might have been 50-50 in Bihar . So your contention that BJP did well holds true for only one state namely Karnatka and ofcourse chattisgarh . In karnatka , the anti incumbency has not yet set in hence it can go any which way in next couple of years but chattisgarh has been a saving grace for BJP . Orrisa is naveen patnaik a given and he is cosying up to congress is again no secret so BJP shouldnot take any consolation from that . One state you forgot was Gujrat where inspite of claims of 20 seats for BJP , Modi was able to manage only a meagre 15 .
Now , im not saying it is end of raod for BJP but the warning signs are already there .
On the other hand congress has done well in Hindi heartland and that definitely is a good sign , but i would still say it is too early to call it a turnaround in fortunes of congress .

In favour of a new dawn
by He She on May 18, 2009 01:18 PM

Well, all that was past, is past and it had its effect...but everytime one looks to the past...it should lead to a new future...by learning both the good things that have been done and the mistakes that have been committed...This would be a time for the congress party to bury all their mistakes of the past and look for a better prospect of our country...to become big in future.

Mr. Advani, who aspired for the PMs post have given a clear indication that if he isn't getting PMs post, he will not be in politics...His age is his compulsion for retirement now...Until now, he was of the opinion that the BJP would form the government and no one else has the command to become PM, except him...now if he has to wait for another 5 years...there would be a lot of people who will go for his 'blood' as he will be over 86 years...now that he has understood that he wants to retire...but he doesn't want to take up the best job to be the leader of opposition...

The lesson is very clear...one who exalts himself will be down and one who humbles himself will be exalted...thats the cycle of life...if Mr. Manmohan Singh is a humble person, who has humbled to his party president...then he has got his reward by once again sitting on the Hot Seat...

The BJP, specially Advaniji, was always accusing Mr. Singh of going to 10 Janpath to consult on various issues...in that case this victory should be attributed to 10 janpath as all those initiatives for the country has been accepted well.

Understand the True Indian
by joseph varghese on May 18, 2009 12:56 PM

Any way good, first time I read a good article in Rediff., Don't mistake me -it is not because you said something good about congress and RahulGandhi. It is because you accepted the Indians did vote sensibly. - yes that’s it, otherwise every body was just to get the PM post, Even the high esteemed (as you all say) ADVANI shown his greed for the PM post, somehow he just wanted it, He tried all tricks for it . And if we look back --- before 2004 elections BJP's 2 ladies kept on hunting Mrs. Gandhi, abusing just because she born in a foreign land, But she bravely faced it with silence. And Indians appreciated that good & strong will. This time Mr.Advani was in the front in abusing the PM and Mrs. Gandhi. If I'm right once Mr. Advani called our PM "NAPUMSAK". But the great people of this country understood and supported the "courage of our PM and Mrs. Gandhi." . In one of the Talk shows in 24/7, the BJP blaming The PM saying that "for every thing He runs to 10 janpath, He never takes any decision ,He is week " then a young man asked the BJP, " what is wrong in that, if he discuss with his party president and does good, then what s the problem, let the decision come from anywhere, if it is good its fine, and that means Mrs. Gandhi is doing good. So Rediff you also correct yourself now and write well, don't give bad messages. Give Good messages through your articles. Not hatred.

This is not to support any political party. If the past is any guide, the Congress will become more sycophantic, more arrogant, will turn more towards social engineering for political benefit than for Nation building. Yes, it is to the credit of the Congress that they will politically benefit from whatever they do, however flawed it actually is.

This victory does not take away the responsibility of the Congress from answering questions of why there is so much of poverty, illiteracy, etc inspite of their long rule.

One can only wish that with the mandate that the Congress has received, they must put Nation first, people second and Religion last. This is an opportunity for the Congress to Right a lot of Wrongs that have happened on this country. That will make them remain in power for a long long time to come.

5 Years of Doom, With Congress resuming office at Center, I see it has a Doom for the Nation.
• Corruption will run as it was going for last 5 years, may even increase as Congress got over 200 seats. There will be no stopping.
• Frauds like Satyam scam, Harshad Mehta Scam will increase (Within few hours of trading today, the stock market have rised exponentially and circuit breaker is inititated).
• Price rise of essential commodities, the food grains will be tied up in FCI godowns and congress will sell them in black market for higher prices.
• No question of bring Black Money from Swiss Banks(no efforts).
• MMS will work hard to design new tactics and Modus Operendi to transfer funds from India to Swiss accounts of Sonia, Raul, Quatrochi.
• No action on Terrorists, Kasab and Afzal Guru will enjoy special status in so called jails as foreign delegates for 5 years. MMS will say law will take its own course of action.
• Congress in the name of Secularism will protect the Terrorists. There will no important steps to crub Terrorism.
• Pakistan will take full advantage, with MMS the weakest Sikh and dummy PM, and will make mockery of Indian Democracy.
• Pak will increase its ISI activities and terror outfits in Kashmir, Kerala and other regions. Pak will pact with Taliban and will attack India. MMS and Chindi Chor (Chidambaram) will analyse how it happened.
• Sonia will betray MMS within next 2 years and will make her Son, Raul as PM.
• Raul and Sonia together will

BJP
by Water on May 18, 2009 12:05 PM  | Hide replies

A Party like BJP has no future because in India only Secular Parties can expect their future. People of this country want to keep its secular status because a multi-religious and multi-culturral society we can not give the chance to religious hatred and cannot devided the people on this basis. From this election people of this country sent a strong message to BJP this is a Secular Country and remain secular. BJP tried their best to devide the people through Varun's drama, and Ram mandir slogans, Money in Swiss Bank, weak Priminister, Dr Singh a puppet of Sonia, and also communalise the Malegaon issue for political gain, aslo tried Mumbai terrorist attack to communalise.
People rejected all BJP's propoganda and bad agebda and given a good verdict to Congress and UPA for their progress and prosparity.
Mr. Advani made a big mistake he only spent his time to accusing Dr Singh and his party rather than development agenda and employment projects to young people. People want to hear develpment, prosparity, and stability not accusations or inability of one government. As per my knowledge Mr.Advani was not a suitable candidate for PM. Now good bye to Advani.

In India no party is secular. We hv parties for Hindus (BJP, Shiv Sena), Sikhs (Akali Dal) and Musl*ms (MIM, Musl*m League etc). Most of other so called 'secular' parties, incl Left, who r not supposed to believe in any god, follow the policy of appeasing communal Musl*ms. They don't support progressive, secular Musl*ms like Taslima, Rushdie, Dr Kalam (he was denied reelection by these parties) etc.

Communal problems started after 1985 in the country, after inexperienced and all powerful Rajiv made mistakes in case of Shah Bano, opening of Ram Mandir gate in Ayodhya and instant banning of Satanic Verses.

Growth of BJP has been a reaction to pseudo secular policies. Unless pseudo secularim stops, noone can save the country from communal problems in future.

appeasement of a particular community to create a vote bank ,and people speaking for genuine adressing of needs of majority community being termed communal is worse communalism.Thease psudo secular leaders who did less for minorities and harped more on secularism are far more worse and dangerous than bjp.U allow people to demolish mosques and say we were helpless ,u allow bombay burn in hands of goons ,u allow Raj Thakrey bash north INDIANS and be a silent spectator and say I am secular,u dont allow law not take its course in hanging a person responsible for attacking Parliament for he belongs to ur vote bank community and say u r secular.Forget these things and perform or u will also be kicked next time.

Some 'enlightenment' to Sairsuresh
by n vasudevan on May 18, 2009 10:03 AM  | Hide replies

I appreciate your belated confessional article. You are now able to distinguish between the good and the bad! What any discernible columnist in India should keep at the back of his/her mind is that the Nehru-Gandhi members are not a bad and corrupt lot and that they did the maximum for the good of the people of India and continue to do so, though they could have done more in certain areas. But why blame them alone for all the ills of the country? India will never accept the divisive, exclusionist agenda of the BJP in the name of Hindutva.
How can this nation be ungrateful to the Nehru-Gandhis for the democratic institutions and basic infrastructures they built, on which we firmly stand now and try to move forward – ranging from Ambar Charkha (khadi and village industries) to Atomic energy!
The teachings of the enlightened souls of Lumbini and Porbandar will always keep this nation in the correct middle path, even if we temporarily stray a bit! Jai Hind.

Don't bring Porbandar to describe the dynasty. Gandhiji had suggested dissolution of the Cong party after independence. Bcz before independence, Cong party consisted of people having different kind of thoughts, left, center and right. Even the Gandhi surname the present generation is using is a means of fooling the common man. Priyanka also wants to use her father's surname for this purpose. Though Sonia & Indira never tried to use surname of their respecive fathers, i.e. Maino & Nehru.

Ram Ji ,

Just one question about this talk of dynasty .
Dynasty as per me is a person inheriting a post for which he may or may not be capable ? right ? If that is the case how can you call congress a dynasty ? Rahul has faught the elections ( twice ) won ( with increasingly more margins ) and infused life in moribund oragnisation of congress in UP . Now if that is not proof of capability what is ?
Now if on the basis of aforementioned argument , we agree that rahul has prooved his capability to become MP , then shall we just keep on criticising him becuase he happens to be son of a politician ?
I think this question of dynasty has to be put to rest now .

Factors behind Cong getting 206 seats
by Ram Sharma on May 18, 2009 10:03 AM

Main factors behind Cong getting 206 seats r:

Media seems to hv been sold to Cong. Most of Mslims as well as Sikhs voted on communal line for UPA. Even Mayawati says that Mslims did not vote for it this time. Wish of a change from 32 yrs of Left rule in WB. Division of anti Cong votes in AP.
