Great Bihari
Sorry State of Bengal
by Great Bihari on May 15, 2009 01:53 AM  | Hide replies

Just don't blame the commies. Bengalis are also equally responsible. Today Bihar is much better than bengal, because biharis are more hardworking, while bengalis are lazy people.

Mahashweta Devi's all out support for Mamata!!!
by Jay Sen on May 15, 2009 01:47 AM

I have huge respect for the venerable M.Devi, her literary prowess and her selfless work for tribal people.

I do appreciate her utter frustration (rightly so) with the horrifying, anti-people dictatorship that the Left rule in Bengal has become. The CPM is rotten to the core - corrupt and rich today, in power thanx mainly to its terrorising goonda cadres. Calling the CPM communists is insulting the true communist.

However, it is stupefying to see M.Devi's unqualified support for Mamata B. M.Devi almost sounds naive and ill-informed. And before anything else, let my Leftist friends NOT JUMP ON THE VENERABLE LADY - she is NOT CORRUPT and has NOT BEEN PAID OFF by the Trinamool.

Having said that, Mamata B does not deserve such undiluted praise. At best a master black-belt class rabble rouser, her credentials for high offices are doubtful. Her party is a bunch of rag-tag hangers on - who either got sidelined in the Congress, or new "padar dadas" wanting to make a quick buck n name.

Yes, Mamata B can rough it out in the open - leading protests, fasts, virulently inciting masses, etc. For a woman who faked a US PhD in her formative years in politics, she has come a long long way.

Its so painful to see the results of 32 years of CPM's dictatorship in Bengal. The once pre-eminent state is now a very pale shadow of its former self. Destitution and prostitution so sadly abound - thanks to the Commies.

Sadder still to note is the abjectly poor quality of Opposition.

useless fellows
by Guest on May 15, 2009 01:41 AM  | Hide replies

I think West Bengal is useless state and have produced so many useless personalities, which the foolish Bengalis think they are wise. Instead my Bihar is great which preferred to tread a progressive path under the Lallo Prasad Yadav. Unlike Bengal which is going to be doomed under the leadership of whether it is Buddhadeb or Mamta. Only because of its useless Bengalis.

Terrorists and Indians
by Pattrick on May 15, 2009 01:26 AM  | Hide replies

One of my dear friend was traveling to US and was mistaken for a terrorist and questioned. He explained that he is an Indian and not a terrorist.

There is a difference:
Terrorists hate America
and
Indians hate each other

A government is good if and only if the opposition is good
by Prasenjit Chakraborty on May 15, 2009 01:10 AM  | Hide replies

Its true that the left should have been better. Its like a blame game, but I still think a government can be better if the opposition is good and strong.
Only a good and strong opposition can direct a government to a good path.Opposition should not only oppose in all the matters, it should support a government if the government is doing anything right. In WB, the opposition is negligible for three decades and people do not elect them simply because they do not have anything to support for.
Take the case of Singur itself. Its true, if you create a factory, you sacrifice some farming land, but you should acknowledge the vast growth that happens to come.
If the factory is that bad, why Gujrat allowed TATA's and why not their oppositions opposed .Are they all fool?
If Mamata supported the factory and also bargained a good deal for them, that would have been an example of a good opposition. And in that way only, A government would have been better.

CPIM rule in Bengal: Worst dictatroship and terrorism
by Jay Sen on May 15, 2009 01:05 AM  | Hide replies

In the current scenario in Bengal we have:

a) An anachronism called CPM - in power with the help of its cadres (armed goons mostly) : terrorising people and illegally trafficking Bangladeshis.
b) Mamata B: A proven rabble rouser (with little experience, maturity or stature for higher level governance) and her rag-tag bunch
c) A state Congress that degenerated into becoming the B-team of the CPM

Who is best suited to govern Bengal and get it back to eminence? NONE I am afraid.

The 'achievements' of the CPM - putting up infrastructure, bringing in "modern" industry, etc - isn't this is the MINIMUM expected from a govt that has ruled for THIRTY TWO YEARS??

Calcutta and Bengal's infra is not even national class. Visit elsewhere and see.
"Modern" industry, can someone tell me where Calcutta/WB stands today vis-a-vis rest of India? The once-great metro is reduced to a "junior artiste".
This is especially TRAGIC, given the rich quality that human resources that could have propelled Calcutta to greatness.

Take the IT/ITES sectors. Calcutta has talented people, institutions, is a metro city - big advantages. The risk of union trouble is not there in IT. With some sincere, pro-active action by the Govt, it could have wrested the initiative and become India's IT hub. This golden chance went by - thanks to the Left. Other parts of India picked up and an exodus of educated youth followed. By the time the Commies woke up, it was way too late.

Commies in power for 32 years!!! OOOOFFFF!!!
by Jay Sen on May 15, 2009 12:58 AM  | Hide replies

Its an interesting realm of enquiry and there could be many many reasons.
1. West Bengal was in a big mess post Naxal movement. Then Mrs. Gandhi imposed Emergency - and people in Bengal out of disgust voted in the Left in 1977.
2. In their iniital years in power, the Left went about land-reforms - a shallow exercise, and big mess now, proving counter-productive. Along with that, they made gheraos, lockouts, bandhs, strikes, commonplace - further destryoing an already weak local work ethic. Thru the last 30 years, Calcutta lost a large part of its good corporate base to other cities. With industry hounded out, degeneration / abject poverty set in. Horrifyingly, prostitution became widespread.
3. The party gradually subjugated the police, bereaucracy, the judiciary, etc all across the state. The CPM goons terrorise at will and the police, courts just look away.
4. Last 30 years, lakhs of educated youth - the intelligentsia quit the state. If such folks quit, what is the quality of manpower left? It suited the Commies fine - whoever is left is forced to toe their line. In rural Bengal, who ever does align is finished off.
5. To top this all, Commies aid the continuous illegal traffiking of Bangladeshis and patronises these pests with ration cards/settlements. What a vote bank!!!

So when CPM cadres (armed goons) indulge in big-time violence, booth capture, rigging - in EVERY election. The cops/admin are in their hands, how can the Left lose ANY election in Bengal?
