india ruled by 1500 families
by wizardo id on Apr 16, 2009 10:33 AM

yeah we have abt 1500 families who decide who comes to power, and what can be done. we are back to the days of the rajas. if you see congress - its nothing but controlled by one single family. if you look at shiv sena - same story, bsp/mayawati same story. even in bjp we have heir apparents like yeddyurappa's son, we have others too. karunanidhi and co, etc etc.

how can we have democracy when there's democracy in the party!! congress has a constitution and stuff, but what use is it of if the stakes are controlled by the one family ? actually, its more than family - its about wealth, so one can imagine why the congress leaders are afraid of. this is what happens when one family rules the country for so many years.

It is not the politicians who need to be reformed.
by Sathish N on Apr 16, 2009 10:31 AM  | Hide replies

It is the public, who need to reform itself. Once reformed with care for the society in and generations to come, we will make sure that proper people are elected to hold office of country's administration.

100% true.

voting is not the real thing - ensuring a good run of governance is the real thing. indians think - once the voting is done the work is over. its NOT!

Reforms
by arungopal agarwal on Apr 16, 2009 10:26 AM

Two ways of reforming politicians-1. of their own consent and consensus 2. Like Indira Gandhi declared emergency- Present or PM can take snatch/extra ordinary power at the appropriate time and have the next elections with reforms-in History Nepolean did it.

What media does? Showing only masala
by Rajan C on Apr 16, 2009 10:20 AM  | Hide replies

Media shows only masala, crying for the behaviour of politicians, projecting themselves as the saviours of Country.
I suggest if media asks candidates, what is their agenda, what political formation they support, and what they won't support, What is the action plan for their onstitency etc, and record that. Atleast in the next election it will be useful, and also voter can think that for what political formation they are supporting, which ultimately decides functioning of central government. Big national dailies and channel can publish this in media or internet, which will be always a guideline for leaders as well as voters.

Sure no one will execute this, because many media are tails of big politicians and buisiness man who bargains with these opputunists

Why media shows only masala?? Becase masala is in demand. We fall for the lure of masala. No one else to blame, but ourselves.

Reform ???
by letsgo on Apr 16, 2009 10:16 AM

Better we should start reforming ourselves first. Then we should consider reforming others. If we have such grievances against them , why are we turning up for casting our votes ? In that case we should take Maoist route to re form our society ! I f we can't do that we should not criticise the existing lot of politicians . Pls look at Bangladesh, Pakistan, SriLanka , Myanmar & Afganistan . I think we are much better off !

First step. Good!!!

Let are lot other variables which decide who gets elected - booth capturing, cash-for-vote, division of the mass on silly criteria, election commission, lies/statistics etc.

India needs leader like Advani, says Vajpayee
by rajath sahi on Apr 16, 2009 10:10 AM

Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Wednesday appealed to people to vote for the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to power under the leadership of his long-time colleague L.K. Advani.

Vajpayee, 82, who is not contesting elections this time because of poor health, asked people to take a pledge 'to elect 'the determined leader and decisive government' - which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has promised and Advani will fulfill', according to the text of his appeal.

The appeal comes on the eve of the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

'The nation is today standing at the crossroads of destiny. One road leads to the UPA (Congress-led United Progressive Alliance) government, which has ignored development and security during the last five years. The second road leads to those coalitions whose chief aim is to get power by hook or crook.'

'The third way goes to the BJP-led NDA, which is committed to political stability, development, good governance and security. In its six years of rule, it has realised this pledge,' Vajpayee said.

On Advani, he noted: 'We have been working together since 1952. We have worked together in government and in opposition. I am impressed by his intellect, clarity of thought and ability to take everybody together. He has a unique place in Indian politics.'

'He has a big contribution in taking the BJP to the heights it has achieved. I believe India today needs a political leader like him,' the
