US-styled system best for uprooting corruption
by Bodh Ramdeo on Apr 16, 2009 07:28 AM  | Hide replies

India should dump her Westminster-styled parliamentary system for a US-styled one, with a real executive president, and elected reps who are reps only- they cannot hold executive posts also, like happens in the Parliamentary system- being both legislators and executors! And will put an end to the BS of being elected from more than one district! al party must win in the primaries to become the Rep, rather than being selected by the party-boss- the people selects those they want to become their representatives, not the corrupt party bosses!

Its not the parliamentary system but the citizens who need to change. Thankfully in democracy citizens have right to change. If some citizen opposes giving bribe, may be his work is not done but he will not be sent to Gulag like in USSR.

* I pay TAXES.
* With them I buy CIVILIZATION.

But almost all Indian politicians (Sonia, Maya, Jaya, Pawar, Lalu, Advani etc) conceal their WEALTH in election affidavits to EVADE taxes.

We constitutional amendment to have primaries
by Ram Online on Apr 16, 2009 02:36 AM  | Hide replies

There should be a big movement to have constitution amendment to have a primaries like in USA where ordinary people will elect their party candidates(not high command). This will ensure the end of dynasty system. Politicians will be more loyal to their constituencies and stop being the chamcha's of their party high command.

Dont agree on the US political system
by shekar v on Apr 16, 2009 02:33 AM

I agree with author on how bad Indian political system is, But DONT SAY AMERICAN SYSTEM IS GOOD. Its a worst system, if the author understands the concept of electoral college in US elections and what happened to Al Gore in 2000 elections he would not be praising this stupid system.

Please Vote for India. Please educate and motivate your parents, friends and relatives to vote.

Please vote and make others to vote for the best candidate irrespective of Caste,Creed, region, religion, fraudulent propoganda etc.

Some of us, have the feeling that if I vote for the best candidate and he is any way going to lose, why vote for him.

Please, please .. we should not do this mistake again.

Please vote for the right candidate no matter he wins or not. Once you vote for right candidate, the self satisfaction you get is unbelievable and outstanding.

Media is the biggest culprit to put you in dilemma by deciding themselves this candidate is going to win instead of supporting good candidates and parties.

We are the decision makers.

Democracy is mob rule .. to a point when good men have no choice but to be silent.

A vote is demeaning method to lend voice the good men.

Democracy is tyranny of the mobs.
It will get its deaxth in due course of time.

Education
by Suraksha on Apr 16, 2009 01:17 AM

If we indeed plan to become a developed nation and carry hope for being the leading innovatotrs and wealthe builders of the world, there are two non-negotiable pre-requisites- Education and Integrity (Discipline).

We can talk theoretically and hypothetically about changes and development, the facts is we will never be leaders if we do not assume responsibility. Not just leaders- each and every citizen.

Blaming that we have no choice of leaders is an excuse. Dont accept, demand and you will get.

Leaders like Mulayam SIngh who talk against tackling challenges of technology showcase the lack of confidence and comprehension facing contemporary development due to education. They retrogress to comfort of oblivion. A leader HAS to be educated, by choice if not by a constitutional requirement.

The choice is for the citizens to make.

Corruption is the biggest problem with Indian Politics
by UsualSuspect on Apr 16, 2009 12:27 AM

In Indian Politics, corruption is the biggest problem. Bribes, kickbacks, insider information, rewarding kith, kin and cronies with lucrative contracts and projects, abuse of power, etc. are the various forms of corruption.

We need to take severe measures to eliminate corruption.

1) Empower the judiciary and law enforcement officials with absolute authority to discharge their duties in booking corrupt people and bringing them to justice. Ensure that people in power cannot indulge in threatening witnesses, transferring officers, etc. to beat the system.
2) Ensure that law enforcement and judiciary officials cannot connive with the offenders or abuse their power.
3) Award severe punishments to perpetrators so that they serve as frightening reminders to the public.

Kamala,

I seriously think you need to go and take some English lessons.

For example,
its NOT "RANDING", its "RANTING"
NOT "ILLTERATES", ts "ILLITERATE"
and NOT "COMMNETS" its COMMENTS.

And you have the nerve to call pro bjp folks as paper tigers.

First learn english and then come back to comment or should I say "commnet" as per the KAMALA ADVANI dictionary ;-)

I'm a BJP supporter and Im proud of it !

any commnet ????

So an attack happens on a place call Mumbai... And the Remote control in Delhi asks CM in Maharashtra to resign... The Remote even ask the Home Minister to resign.. Kissa Khatam...

The Remote control is not even accountable to the People of India...

Only solution is Parliament or Tarliament... the Democracy in its current form is not working...

By the way the Delhi Remote stood for her first election from 2 different cities. Both Hand pickedby corrupt politicians and the remote got elected... This WAS A JOKE AS FAR AS PEOPLE'S REPRESENTATION IS CONSIDERED...

Go and do some home work before BASHING ANY PRESIDENTIAL DEMOCRACY...

Thanks to Congress which ruled our country for over 45 years since Independence we the people can no longer differentiate between "LEGISLATURE AND EXECUTIVE" and "WHAT STATE GOVT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR AND WHAT CENTRAL GOVT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR"!

In fact we the people cannot figure the following :
1) Is Congress working for all Indians or only minorities ?
2) Is MMS a PM or a puppet ? Is he human or animal (ref Sher-e-punjab) ?
3) Is India a democracy or a Monarchy or Oligarchy ?

Congress cannot be responsible for BJP illteracy..

Minorities has special protection under constitution and that is what CONGRESS is following...

IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THAT MUSTER ENOUGH SUPPORT FOR 2/3 MAJORITY IN PARILAMENT AND INTRODUCE A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT... NO USE OF SCREAMING!!!

THE LEADER OF MAJORITY PARTY IS SONIA GANDHI.. THE CONSITUTION SAYS THAT LEADER OF MAJORITY PARTY WILL BE INVITED FOR FORM GOVERNMENT... BJP VEHEMLY OPPOSED IT... HENCE SONIA ASKED MM SINGH TO STEP IN...

CONGRESS PARILAMENTARY PARTY ELECTED MM SINGH AS THE LEADER... BUT THE LEADER OF MAJORITY PARTY IS STILL SONIA!!!

DO YOU STILL THINK INDIA IS A MONARCHY!!! IF YES.. THEN BJP PEOPLE ARE MORE ILLTERATE THAN SUB SAHARAN AFRICANS...

Minorities do need special protection. What Congress does though is "special treatment" and BJP is against that.

BJP's reference to MMS as a puppet is their way of mocking our Flawed Democractic system where the leader of a majority coalition could nominate any MP (however incompetent he/she may be) to be the PM.

BJP does not think India is a monarchy or oligarchy but it feels saddened that our democracy has been reduced to one.

BJP accuses Congress of
1) "gaming the system" by using a Gandhi surname to get votes from ignorant electorate
2) indirectly encouraging dynasty politics at all levels by practicing it at the topmost level
3) evading moral responsibility for not being able to contain corruption or terrorism.

THE BEAUTY OF DEMOCRACY IS THAT IT AUTOCORRECTS.. IF THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG IT WILL BE REFLECTED IN NEXT ELECTION..

WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT MM SINGH WITH ABOUT 40 YEARS OF EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE ALL THE WAY TO BEING A RESERVE BANK GOVERNOR... IS LESS QUALIFIED THAN ADVANI/VAJPAYEE WHO HAS NEVER EVER DID ANY PAYING JOB!!!

Anyone can become PM in India but that anyone should be competent and able to lead the country and its complex political system. He should be thoroughly vetted before he is selected for that post. I'm not saying that MMS is not a good candidate but that Congress is making a joke of our political system.

The problem with democracy is that it can be gamed, especially in a country like India where 70% voters are rural (and possibly ignorant and uneducated). If the rural voter does not know about the ills of dynasty politics, he will continue to vote for scions of the dynasty because he doesn't know any better and he thinks that dynasty politics is a good thing. As educated people, you and I have the responsibility to educate others who are less fortunate than we are about such issues, but that's a separate issue.

MMS is qualified but is spineless and uninspiring. But my main problem is Congress establishment and its lack of vision for the nation, inability to handle corruption and terrorism, minority appeasement and vote-bank politics, etc.

Of course, one might say that if Congress is so bad why does it keep coming to power ? Congress is coming to power despite being bad but if you notice Congress party is on a decline since 1984.

My aim and the aim of BJP is to hasten the decline of Congress (as we know it today) for the betterment of India.

CONGRESS WILL CEASE TO EXIST BUT VOTE BANK POLITICS. THEY APPEASE THE MINORITIES AND ILL TREAT THE DIVIDED HINDU MAJORITY. SOON CONGRESS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BACK LASH FROM THE UNITED HINDUS. FOR ANY PSEUDO SECULARIST OR A CONVERT LIKE THE ONE HERE, A UNIFIED HINDU IS A NIGHTMARE AND NOW THESE WILL OPPOSE BJP OR ANY GROUP WHICH IS SUPPORTING THE DEMANDS OF THE HINDUS. FINALLY IT IS THE LACK OF VISION OF THE THEN CONGRESS THAT WE DO NOT HAVE UNIFORM LAW AND PROTECTION FOR ALL. WE NEED UNIFORM CIVIL CODE AND THAT IS WHAT CONGRESS ILLITERATES WONT UNDERSTAND AND BJP DOES UNDERSTAND.THE POLITICIANS, MINORITIES AND CONVERTS ARE MISUSING THIS AND PSUEDO SECULARISTS ARE SUPPORTING IT FOR VOTE BANK.SO IT IS HIGH TIME THE CONGRESS ILLITERATES UNDERSTAND THE GROWING CONCERN OF THE MAJORITY WHO IS LOSING THEIR RIGHTS. MMS HAD EVEN GONE TO SAY THAT THE FIRST RIGHT OF THE INDIAN RESOURCES ARE WITH MUSLIMS. THE LEADER HIMSELF HAS GONE FOR VOTE BANK POLITICS WHY NOT THEIR CADRE FOR POWER? IN REALITY HAS ANY MINORITY BEEN PROTECTED BY THE GOVERNMENT? IT IS THE MAJORITY'S TOLERANCE AND SECULAR ATTITUDE WHICH PROTECTS THE MINORTY AND NOT JUST THE ILLITERATE CONGRESS.

Out of the box thinking
by Ramasubramaniam Iyer on Apr 15, 2009 10:47 PM

Dear Mr Anil Kumar

Superb article. Wonderfully articulated.
Of course this process like everything else may have some disadvantages.
The problem with us Indians we always take actions based on past and not on the current or present situation.
We are not objective thinking individuals except for few people like you.
For us every issue is emotional. The politicians know how to use this emotion and flame it because they know people react to emotions for eg If a politician promises 3rs kg rice our populace dont question it. If a politician promises jobs for certain cast/religions people vote for them
No body questions the politician how exactly you will go about it. How much tax increase is required? etc etc.
For eg. Gujjars want reservation or to be recognized as SC/STs. Meenas opposite it?
Instead if Meenas and Gujjars sat together and identified objectively how best to implement the reservation so that all marginalised section of society are benefitted India would be a GREAT Country!.
How about Muslims and Hindus sit together and discuss how best to resolve Babri Masjid issue instead of letting political parties hijack this issue.
Long way to go for India but I am optimistic India will get there!
Jai Hind
