Why politics is India's most lucrative profession
by vijay rao on Apr 14, 2009 11:31 AM

Politicians have to speak with every peoples of his country. He has to maintain his power over these peoples by giving them lawful help, that law was given by the government under which he was working for peoples. He has to communicate for survival in the Party if he done mistakes (any rumors)in society. He has to give clear picture about his left or right seated person (his country or other country) for every reason ask by the peoples of his country. So, the Politics is lucrative in India.

Egovernance is the solution
by Jai Max on Apr 14, 2009 11:29 AM  | Hide replies

Politicians escape accountability because it is so difficult for any one to go through all the information contained in paper files. As a result people in government get away with frauds easily. On the other hand if good egovernance systems are introduced, it would be so easy to monitor accountability. People cannot hide facts by burning files or getting papers stolen out of files. Egovernance can maintain multiple copies of the same record at different places so that the data cannot be destroyed. Data in database format can also be easily analysed by using efficient database applications. Till we force the governments to adopt full egovernance and not just citizen interfaces, we cannot catch the politicians who misuse government money and machinery for their personal gains. If you really want to see India progress as a vibrant democracy, insist on full egovernance adoption

Perhaps this is the reason why people like Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh do not want computerisation. They are afraid that with computerisation, egovernance will be forced on to governments and they will not be able to cheat people easily

So what do we do?
by Jagdish Dubey on Apr 14, 2009 11:28 AM

May be these are the perils of democracy. It may start initially with well meaning simple people as in our own country immediately after the independence.Once people know the perquisites of power the fall follows exponetially. As it is the things were so bad, which have been made worse by MPLAD and such largesse, the legislators have acquired for themselves, legally. With few exceptions half the amount of these funds flows to the clandestine coffers of the honble MPs and MLAs. With very few exception they all acquire huge properties and contacts and take a cut from those whom they support in getting contracts. Bureacrats follow their example. Every district has one or two dadas cornering contracts and killing whoever comes in their way of doing so. Luckily for now we dont have an India Italian style mafia yet. But these contract grabing criminals join hands as politicians. So how do we fight this menace?
1.We may perhaps create pressure for abrupt issuance of new currency to making worthless the amassed amount stashed away in RBI notes.
2.Making a law for compulsory disclosure of bank accounts in Switzerland, Rome, and tax heavens failing which the outstanding amount in all those acconuts becomes the property of the Government of India.
3. Making all transactions above say Rs.10,000- receipts and payments, legal only through bank accounts.
4. Giving tax payers the right to demand full and transparent details of all expenditures by the governments.

the economics of politics
by Raghavendra Bhat on Apr 14, 2009 11:23 AM  | Hide replies

The author may also note that there is a severe erosion in the net-worth of the small/medium farmer and the ordinary businessman vs the filed worth of the politician. The politician's worth keeps on "mysteriously" increasing every four years' whereas this "fall" guy is not even able to hold back his assets from getting reduced.

The reality in not being able to file IT returns via the digital medium is compounded by the fact that the Govt. departments are using insecure/non verifiable propreitary computing software at most of its "public" servers. Digital signatures are not being provided to the common taxpayer to enable this and "free" (read free as in freedom -> GNU Project) formats are not being mandated for information exchange. Digital lock-in is real unless we "immediately" start using free/GNU software and readers should note that "public" data is in jeopardy!

RAGHAVA, THERE ARE NO SMALL FARMERS IN THIS COUNTRY. THEY HAVE ALL BECOME COOLIES OR SOLD THEIR LAND, BECAME BPL PEOPLE & MIGRATED TO CITIES. WHO WILL BUY YOUR RICE OR WHEAT OR WORK FOR YOU IF ONE GETS RICE OR WHEAT AT RS.3/ PER KG FROM THE GOVT WHICH BUYS THEM FROM THE FARMER AT RS. 8/KG. THE ONLY WAY TO SAVE THE FARMER IS, LET THE GOVT. BUY THEIR PRODUCE AT SAY RS. 25 PER KG. & DISTRIBUTE IT FOR FREE

why potitics is lucrative.
by Z X on Apr 14, 2009 11:15 AM

Just one example; before laloo came to politics his family was having no means of livlihood.
his elder brother was a peon.
After entering politics his wife earned in crores by just rearing cattles. Of course LaLOO contributed by diverting the "Fodder".
So much lucre in this combination !!

Cleanse the System
by Sunny on Apr 14, 2009 11:13 AM  | Hide replies

Every profession ensures education is the base criteria for selection. Higher the education, beter is the position as well as salary.

Only in Indian politics does one see the reverse, least educated are the ones who are the most succesful.

3 point agenda for cleansing our political system :
1. Minimum edcuation qualification: Bachelors Degree
2. Mandatory retirement in active politics at the age of 60. Cannot contest for any position after this age.
3. No criminal record, whatsoever.

Does any political party have the wherewithal to implement these 3 pointers.

Every profession requires these 3 clauses catered to for qualifying, why is politics exempted???

only way to clean our system is one should become a MP or MLA for two terms only. only one member rom a family can be public servent. this should be the case with govt. employees. now the public servants do anything to sfegaurd their wealth earnined by being a public servent
