Runs 'n Ruins

In another book that gavaskar wrote in 1984 Runs ‘n Ruins and he writes an incident regarding mohinder.
‘There was yet another important matter that needed sorting out. Prize money. Kapil had won the man of the series award for the England tour in 1982 and mohinder had won it for the Pakistan and the west indies tours that followed. They had not shared the money with the others, as is the practice. It transpired that they had not yet received the money from one of the sponsors. The other sponsor had very nicely announced the award and got all the publicity he wanted. But when it came to sending the cheque, they were strangely reluctant. Any number of reminders mainly verbal were of no use. This however is a common thing in india, where everybody is ready to exploit the players and the game for their benefit. I had a similar annoying experience towards the end of the west Indies series.
The discussion went on and it became apparent that mohinder was reluctant to share his prize money. He offered the excuse that since the award was announced in india, he did not think he should share the money for his performance in Pakistan and the west indies. It was the strangest excuse I have ever heard and with that one statement, the Indian cricket team suffered a setback whose effect was incalculable. Everybody just stared at jimmy open mouthed trying to register his words.

Other members tried to explain to him that it did not matter where the games were played. If prize money was announced, then it had to be shared. He agreed reluctantly, though he did not appear convinced. Kapil in the middle of the season received his prize money and shared it with the team. Mohinder has yet to do so, or finding some reason or the other not to. This is surprising, because he is a likable fellow, though his silence during team discussions at various times has been misunderstood.
There was hardly any discussion on team strategy. We did not even discuss individual strengths and weaknesses of Pakistan team. And that too on the eve of the first test. Perhaps the prize money discussion had exhausted and depressed the team.

Idols

thats the name of the book gavaskar wrote. i think quite a few people here would have at least heard about the book (if they have not read it yet)

That is the name of the book gavaskar wrote in 1983 where he speaks about players who have influenced him-Indian and foreign cricket players whom he idolized. There are 31 in all and mohinder is one of them. Gavaskar has devoted 8 pages to mohinder and I would like to give some excerpts.
Gavaskar opens the chapter saying ‘when I started writing this book, sometime last year, mohinder amaranth did not figure in the list of my idols. Until then he had always been a very fine player who had not somehow produced a performance befitting his potential at the test level. The transition from a very fine player to a great player came only last season when, with the consistency which is the hallmark of great players, he started producing 100s and big scores in all the matches that he played.’
Later he goes on to say in the 1981-82 season, Indian cricket saw another young players come up in ashok malhotra. And he was an added asset to the players mentioned earlier who have been consistent in our middle-order batting. And it was when patil failed in 4 consecutive tests that malhotra got a look and he did a good job in the first test innings. He was considered to be a promising cricketer. Consequently it was difficult for mohinder to stage a comeback for two consecutive seasons. The selection committee decided to bring back patil

Dhoni has been an all time favourite! Why this sudden change of heart? Is it because you were removed unceremoniously? That was sad, but I think you are mature enough to talk about Dhoni like this. Its a shame.

Because he failed in 10 Tests in 13 of his last Tests as Captain, scored at an ave of 29 runs in the last 20 Tests. Above all he is not showing any tactical skills or do any preparation required for a Test Captain.

You may not have heard of Gilchrist or Sangakkara or AB De villiers. After Gilchrsit's arrival we no longer expect wicket keepers to be any less than regular a batsman, may be some concession can be given but still batting skills are essential.

It,s NOT Value, but BRAND Value....
by vr hari on Dec 12, 2012 01:47 PM

that counts. His BRAND Value in IPL, CSK, is still Sky Rocketing. And to maintain that he needs to be the Captain of the Test Team. That,s why BCCI Prez, who is also the CSK Owner keeps him as Captain...SIMPLE...
