If ODI is the criteria, then Jadeja is the right person. If you look at the matches, Jadeja got all important wickets and also he contributed with bat also. Ashwin doesn;t come under specialist spinner. He is not an all rounder. He is just other tamil like Mukund or Vijay Murali. This is very unfortunate that tamil feelings are playing a bigger role in team selection. There is no properly defined criteria. I believe as long as Srikanth is there, there will be atleast one to two tamils in the team which kills the team spirit.
Another questional selection is Yuvraj Singh. I believe Pujara needs to be given more opportunities. He is a better player than Yuvraj in tests. In ODIs, it is a different story. my final XI for the test is

Because he is a good smart bowler. Get off that filthy regionalist mindset

Well said Prabodh. I have noted that this Reddy guy is always obsessed with regional politics. Ashwin deserves his selection as an off spinner replacing Bhaji. Reddy should be made Chief Selector and we will see only NRI players for a change!

It is easy to say because of srikanth, tamil's are being favoured. Sorry my friend, you are wrong because Raina is out in spite of good performance against west indies in test matches. Aswin is there because he can induce batsman to go for shots and have a chance to get wickets. Harbajan use to do this before. Somehow he needs to get back into this rythm. I am sure he will be preparing for Big Aussie tour and definitely feature along with Aswin. I bet

This is a terrible comment from u. If they really had to go for tamils, why Vijay and Mukund were left out. Ashwin deserves a place. I also like the fact that Rahul Sharma has been included. This selection committee is doing a good job.

If you want to talk about Ashwin selection, please discuss about his performance only. Don't get carried away as tamil / telugu / kannada / marathi/punjabi etc like politicians. All are indians. Be positive.

Hi Sreenivasulu Reddy - welcome back! I came to rediff to specifically read your comment. It never fails to crack me up.

Ashwin deserves a place even one year before because harbhajan playing on past repetation & not doing anything substantially as a bowler atleast in rest matches.
Although the WI team is not a very strong one, the exclusion of Praveen Kumar was a very positive move on the Indian pitches by the selectors.
This is the very thing Dhoni needs to change in his thinking. There are claims that he is being rested, but frankly his ODI performance dropped in India-England recent ODI series and we don't expect too much from him in the Test series.
Yadav is a better first-class player than Aaron and has 69 wickets at 25.91. Aaron is very crafty and versatile with his pace and fits better in ODIs. Either decision is sound because Praveen Kumar cannot be the frontline bowler in Test matches in India in particular.
Even in English conditions the English batsmen were well equipped with facing swing by playing late, and Praveen lost his effectiveness in England as well.
Another spinner India could have groomed was Monish Parmar, with FF record of 94 wickets at 18.94. We don't have much feedback about this action being adjusted and how it has affected this ability, but looks like a strong candidate to replace Harby in the future.
With Yuvraj, India can go with Ashwin and Rahul Sharma to form the spin trio, though not as formidable as Harby, Ohja and Mishra. This is the West Indies which India can live with younger players.
Overall a very positive move by the selectors after the England debacle.

It is an extremely good decision to drop Raina. He is a very good ODI and T20 player but has been very poor in tests.
It is really good that selectors remember that and dropped in.
Rahane is a brilliant choice, more technically sound.
what a pathetic selection, they said that selection is not based on ipl performance and select rahul sharma who did not play single one day match.... they drop jadeja who can bat and select ashwin.... its ridculus to drop harbhajan on indian pitches on basis of england performance where evry indian bowler included ashwin and mishra struggle.... harbhajan is more difficult to play on indian tracks than ashwin.... umesh yadav is quick but not ready for one-day so test is far distant goal and dropping pk for him is biggest mistake....

Agree about Bhajji. But Umesh Yadav needs to be groomed. He may not make the team immediately. PK is not a wicket taker.

i agree abt pk who did well in eng. but hes a kind of bowler relying on swing who cant b relied on ind flat pitches

WestIndies always struggle against the leg spinner hence we need Rahul sharma in the squad. Harbhajan recent performance in test and one day series is pathetic and Ashwin qualifies for the recent good series against England and west indies. Harbhajan singh is good on Indian soil for his batting and no longer he is considered as a quality spinner anymore.

Jadeja bowled better than ashwin in ODI . So why is he out and Bhajji is better than all .
Re: pathetic selectors

When did Harbhajan rock the earth on Indian pitches? I haven't seem him do that in last three years..
Go and watch last five one dayers ans see what Yadav and other youngsters did. Also Aswin is full time spinner and Jadeja is par timers.. oh well This is the series to groom young players and selectors made a right call..
Thank god the selection comittee did not select the headweight champion Harbhajan Singh. He may take couple of tailenders wicket and claims best spinner in the world. This is a right choice to give the credit to some of upcoming players like Umesh, Varun, Ashwin and Rahul sharma.

I believe you are talking about 10 year old story. My comments based on the last 3 year test series and you know the truth

from Vasant's comments, he seemed to be in come for last few years and just woekn up..

I agree with you. But it doesnt matter if bajji is head weight but takes wicket. The fact is he is not taking wicket!
genuine pacers like arun and yadav. they need to b persisted not nly in selection but also needs to b taught not to lose pace for the sake of line n length!!!
Re: Re: good to hv pacers
by Happy Friday on Oct 29, 2011 01:01 AM
I would go for Raina in place of yuvi for test. But Yuvi needs recognition for his contribution to win WC. But if he fails again in test theb Raina is there!
Re: Re: Re: good to hv pacers

Raina just CANNOT be in tests, please do not confuse his ODI and T20 performances with tests. He was terrible in tests!
