Involve more team to make cricket a global sports
by Karun Sharma on Mar 29, 2011 10:07 AM

Look at Football... FIFA involved teams from different parts of the world... in the beginning the ones from Asia and Africa used to be bashed up by those from South America and Europe..
but as the popularity rose, those team improved and are now doing well and entertained the fans all over the world.

Football is now world's most watched and followed sports....FIFA world cup has highest number of viewership worldwide because fans from all over the world are involved..

If Cricket is to become a global sports, then more number of teams must be involved and give them a chance to grow stronger... over time they will surely be..

8 teams seems too for the grand title such as World Up ... does not sound right at all

or else there should be qualifying rounds where every team needs to go through and qualify

There should be 10 teams in WC and top eight teams should be World Cup while other teams like Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherland, Canada, Kenya, Zim, Afghanistan etc teams should have separate world cup and winner and runner-up this pool should be added in world cup so level of cricket will be high otherwise it is wastage of time.

Give a thought to the associated countries
by Sitaram Raj on Mar 28, 2011 10:35 PM  | Hide replies

Hey guys. I agree that some of the matches with the minnows is boring. But the ICC should also consider that these guys don't have much experience against the bigger nations saving Ireland. I think the ICC should instead have tournaments where the minnows are also included so that they get the experience and grow as a better team. Then they could retain the same number of teams and the world cup could be as interesting as before. What's your opinion guys?

ICC's Compulsions
by mangesh anaokar on Mar 28, 2011 10:11 PM

ICC's contract for TV rights requires every world cup to have a minimum of 47 matches. ICC's decision to have 10 team world cup in 2015 with each team playing each other once followed by 2 semis and final enable ICC to have 48 matches i.e. fulfill its requirements. 45 matches can be wrapped up in about 5 weeks which should is just about ok. I agree that all 10 test playing nations should not automatically qualify - and hence there should be a qualification stage. My suggestion would be to have 16 teams competing in the qualification stage - this would include 10 test teams and 6 associates divided into 4 groups of 4 each - with each team playing each other on a home and away basis. This will ensure that associates get to play at venues in test nations and bigger draw will be test nations playing in associate venues - imagine what draw will be India in say Netherlands. Top 2 teams from each of this group automatically qualify - whereas 4 teams from the rest play a qualifier for balance 2 positions, this will enable opportunity for test nations which fail to make it to Top 2 in their group due to some freak outcomes (e.g. India and Pakistan in 2007). All of these matches can be played over course of an entire season one year prior to the World Cup - for e.g. for 2015 World Cup, the qualification pools could be from May 2013 - Dec 2013 (covers all seasons across geographies); followed by additional matches during first quarter of 2014.

ICC are probably thinking that more-teams-more-publicity is a strategy for T20 World Cups.

They seem to want to keep ODIs competitive.

Sachin had a suggestion that he liked the idea of 20 overs, 2 innings "One-Day Tests".

They are doing this in Australian FC cricket.

Those kind of things will help spread cricket and the comlpexity of draws, innings defeats and things like that all inside one single day.

My opinion is that T20 will get more people around the world because T20 can be watched in the evening like a football match.

That's why IPL is such a success. It hits an entertainment sweet-spot - the pleasure-filled evening - without spoiling the work or daily wage.
