I got a New Format!!!! Will the ICC accept it.
by chunjaru on Feb 21, 2011 01:46 PM  | Hide replies

6 Minnows play just ahead of the worldcup. A round robin league and only 2 toppers are selected. Then the 8 test playing nations and the 2 minnows play in a round robin league and the top 4 play in the semis. Can finish of the WC in less than 30 days and the minnow league will be a teaser before the WC.

And two teams who finish in the bottom of the round robin league will be relegated to play the "minnow league" in order to qualify for the next world cup.

Ponting is right

I agree. Pointing is totally right. Matches with minnows takes away all the excitement. We have to wait for long time for "Quarter finals", which should actually be the start for world cup, top 8 teams, playing against each other. The "top 8" should be decided by all other ICC tournaments prior to the world cup.

With minnows, even players don't feel totally committed. If they win against minnow, people will say it's only against the minnows and not credit will be given. However if they loose against minnows, people will shower shameful comments.

I agree that the minnows need to be reduced ..

Another option would have been to restrict the no. of teams to 12 and have 3 groups of 4 teams each .. A round robin league within the groups will ensure that the top two teams from each group move on (along with points) to the next round of Super Six. In the SuperSix each team plays the other once and hence with 8 matches played and all the points taken into account, the semi-finalists are chosen.

The SemiFinal should be at least a two match affair with one team batting first and in the next game bowling first. If both the matches are won by the same team, they go through easily. If both the teams win one match each, then, we could analyse pre-set conditions like NetRun Rate, No. of wickets etc.

The Finals should be definitely a 3 match affair ... with the 3rd match played only if required.

This format will ensure that there are more competitive matches in the SuperSix stage, the points from the entire league phase ensure that the best 4 teams who have played consistently go through to the Semi's and the most deserving team has more chances of winning the coveted trophy ...

India has been playing test matches since 1932 and never been minnows. They beat Mighty West Indies 2-1 in WI in 1971 and England by 1-0 in England. NZ, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa got test status after India.

In 1981-82 India defeated the powerful England 2-1 in ODI series.

But, the other captains criticised india's inclusion in the 1983 world cup. Only the then australian captain Kim Hughes predicted india's victory.

Kim Hughes did not predict India's victory, but had said that India could be a dark horse. I do not think if any captain criticized India's inclusion in WC 83 as there were much weaker teams in WC 83.

Get your facts right. Inda was not a minnow but a lower ranked test playing nation.

Seeing matches of Kenya, Canada, it really makes sense for these teams to play say in T20 world cup rather than 50 over ODI format.

Its just wasteful and make the worlkd cup lenghty and boring. Instead they could ahve played a super six or super eight, where good teams at least gets some chance to recover after a one odd loss.

Here from QF, even a team who wins against minnnows but loose all other games in their pool, can win the world cup by winning a QF, SF etc. This world cup is designed more for luck from QF onwards.

No, Srilanka was not a minnow. They had defeated India in 1979 world cup.

.1992 Format - All play All ( Nine Teams) was Best among 10 WC.
only Best Teams reach semis.
1999 and 2003 saw useless contest .
2011 is NO diff ,20/25 days are simply boring.
only 28 march onward competitions strarts.. will have to wait for another 1 month for real wc contest.

Indian sponsors started dominating from 1996 World cup and since then they have cowed down ICC to manipulate the World Cup schedules to their advantage.

Since the sponsors have most of the Indian players endorsing their over priced junk consumer products, the World cup at home is the most manipulated so that Team India does not exit before Semi Finals.

The WCup will be a better tournament with fewer teams
by Raj India on Feb 21, 2011 12:36 PM  | Hide replies

I donoo why these kind of useless statements by a captain...What will happen, if India was not allowed to play in 1983 edition of World cup? That time, other captains criticised indias inclusion in the world cup... Only the aussi captain (Kim hughes, i think) predicted india's victory in that world cup...Also, kenya was the semi finalist in 2003. If the minnows are allowed to play with stronger teams in major tournaments, then only, they will become stronger...I admit that this will reduce the beauty of the tournament, but this will make cricket more popular...

;-)... If you think India's 1983 squad was comparable to today's Kenya and Canada..... well... the less said about you the better, I suppose... :)
