To me, the most stylist and elegant batsman on earth is Sunny Gavaskar. He was the real run machine and a great stylist all at once. I can never forget his delightful leg glances or the square cuts with barely a white hat (no protection whatsoever for his head!). His best innings (apart from his dream debut in WI, 1971) has been the epic 221 he played against England at The Oval(1979). Laxman's Calcutta knock (2001) may be comparable, but cannot quite be called equal considering Sunny played with high fever and tooth ache during that innings. And India was fighting hard in the fourth innings trying to save the match (target 433) against the likes of Willis, Botham, Hendricks, Underwood and emburey. Unfortunately the batsmen following Chauhan and Vengsarkar showed little character and we lost out on a historic victory by mere 8 runs. Sunny was the eight man to get out at 221. Truly a master class of a knock - only there were no TV footings to capture that glorious innings.

who can forget his last test inning where he scored classy 96 on turning wicket. India was all out for 236 & gavaskar was last man out. Also 94 balls 100 in test against likes of marshal/holding/garner. Wcup ODI century of just 85 balls

my best memory is the innings against WI in Kotla in '83 . This century was against Marshal , Holding , Roberts & Garner . truly remarkable skill and technique against fast bowling

He has the best fourth innings total and average when compared to other batsmen. It meant he played either for a draw (to save) or win. He also contributed to India's great fourth inning scores like:
429 against England (221) 438 against Australia (a hundred) 406 against WI (106) and many other where the fourth innings score were in excess of 300. He has also scored 2 centuries in a test three times. He has also carried the bat through the innings.
In fact, he never wore a helmet throughout his life except a skull cap from 1983 onwards. In fact, he was at his aggressive best in the 1983 test series against WI who had Marshal, Garner, Holding and Roberts. He scored a great 121 (127 balls), 236 NO (338 balls) and a great 90 (87 balls).
Often, people forget about his one day role when he took two catches in the 193 cup final. Did you ever know that there is only one instance when a fielder was awarded man of the match award in one day cricket? It was Sunil Gavaskar for his four stunning catches against Pakistan (Indians were all out for 127 while Pakistan was bundled out for 87 with Kapil taking five wickets.
In the end, he faced some of the most celebrated fast bowlers of all time, without helmets and sometimes on uncovered pitches (before 1977).
He did his best to prevent India winning the world cup in 83, because he was removed from captaincy(not that it worked). He was also jelous of Kapil. This arrogant character should be barred from all cricket activities.

what rubbish dude...have you forgotten all those wonderful slip catches he took in the final to help india win??? And some of those were off kapil's bowling for your kind information... It is because of this silly regional mindset of people like you that India keeps its focus divided into small regions rather than one unified strong identity...Grow up and stop thinking and perpetuating nonsense. Both Gavaskar & Kapil were greats of Indian Cricket and it has nothing to do with region that they came from...
Scoring 772 runs in four matches of his debut series that too against fiery bowling of West Indian giants, is clear proof of greatness of a cricketer. According to me SMG is as great as Sachin if not more.
