He was a good player, an all time great, but not a entertaining player like Viru Sehwag or Sir Vivian Richards or Adam Gilchrist.

One must give credit where it is due, in his time he faced some of the most frightening quicks in the game's history like Roberts, Holding, Marshall, Thomson, Imran, Willis, etc and came out with flying colors. He also played without helmet for much of his career and did the same wonderfully well.

Most Graceful retirement
by ASHISH KUMAR on Feb 10, 2011 05:33 PM  | Hide replies

Gavaskar had most gracious retirement in world cricket
1)Last test inning he scored 96 runs agianst pakistan on turning wicket when Entire Indian team out for 236.
2) Last ODI series- Wcup 1987- In penultimate match scored century of 85 balls
3)Last First class match- 188 against world eleven (quality bowling attack)on lords representing MCC eleven
4)Quit ODI captaincy in 1985 after winning bensen & hedges cup in australia.
all 7 test playing team participated in this cup & India won all the matches.
What a great player.
Even great like Kapil didn't retire twith that grace as continued last 2 yrs without much of performance.
Better not to mentione about useless medicore politicain like dada/dhoni etc who will never retire until kicked.

1. Gavasker on need to score run a ball.
2. Ganguly on running btween the wickets
3. Afridi on ethics and sportsmanship
4. Sreesanth on need to keep a cool head
Prabhakar on contribution of one's wife on career of a sportsman.
5. Nehra on maintaining fitness level
6. Greg Chappel on the role a coach in keeping harmonious atmosphere in dressing room.

Point 1. is interesting. After seeing Gavaskar in the 1987 World Cup (after which he retired); he should seriously comment upon how to score "more" than run a ball..
Your thoughts?

by anand on Feb 10, 2011 05:24 PM

That was a message from the all senior cricketers when sunil was playing. After attacking start of the career he has to curtail his nature style and stand on the other side to see the match draw. His nos test and 10000 run with sachin almost same. At that time approach to draw a test match than win. cirket is a game of team and not one person. Great sanya

for achivements of others.

However great Gavaskar is painted in media but fact remains "he never helped win any test sries when India was in crisis"

it KAPILDEV WHO BROUGHT HONOUR TO INDIAN CRICKET TEAM IN WORLD OF CRICKET PLAYING COUNTRIES AND EVEN PLAYERS LIKE RICHARDS AND LYOEDS ARE FANS OF KAPIL.

ONLY thing kapil is not having press /media freiendship(paid/or otherwise)so that he can be kept posing like gavaskar and tendulkar in media.

KAPIL HAS REALY PLAYED FOR INDIA WHERE GAVASKAR HAS PLAYED FOR HIS RECORDS.!!

Another irritating argument. Kapil and Gavaskar played for India.
We all remember how Kapil kept bowling to get a wicker and cross Rechard Hadlee's record.
And Kapil himself agreed he would not have played 175* if he were not the captain of Indian team.
If we are speaking about Gavaskar in negative sense, I will say we are jealous.
When Gavaskar was playing those were the days when Indian team was not good enough to win. And when India won there was always contribution from Gavaskar. People keep brading some players as playing for country. Especially those who throw their wickets. Throwing wickets is not called selfless it is careless. Gavaskar made a Debut like Azhar and was playing brilliantly in the early days. He sacrificed many of his shots when he understood that team heavily depended on him. He played excellent innings like 221 in OVal in England when except Vengsarkar no one helped him and we could make a historic win but for no support from other batsman. His 96 in the last test again Pakistan was another case when there was only 1 other fifty in the test. Again we lost the match because no one else played well in that match. And Kapil lost his wicket foolishly when Gavaskar asked not to play with Back lift as the ball was spinning unpredictably.
Kapil makes more expressions on field while Gavaskar doesnt. But both contributed a lot and stay in top of great cricketers

Best Innings of Gavaskar
by LOL on Feb 10, 2011 03:09 PM  | Hide replies

To me, the most stylist and elegant batsman on earth is Sunny Gavaskar. He was the real run machine and a great stylist all at once. I can never forget his delightful leg glances or the square cuts with barely a white hat (no protection whatsoever for his head!). His best innings (apart from his dream debut in WI, 1971) has been the epic 221 he played against England at The Oval(1979). Laxman's Calcutta knock (2001) may be comparable, but cannot quite be called equal considering Sunny played with high fever and tooth ache during that innings. And India was fighting hard in the fourth innings trying to save the match (target 433) against the likes of Willis, Botham, Hendricks, Underwood and emburey. Unfortunately the batsmen following Chauhan and Vengsarkar showed little character and we lost out on a historic victory by mere 8 runs. Sunny was the eight man to get out at 221. Truly a master class of a knock - only there were no TV footings to capture that glorious innings.

who can forget his last test inning where he scored classy 96 on turning wicket. India was all out for 236 & gavaskar was last man out.
Also 94 balls 100 in test against likes of marshal/holding/garner.
Wcup ODI century of just 85 balls

Re: Best Innings of Gavaskar

He has the best fourth innings total and average when compared to other batsmen. It meant he played either for a draw (to save) or win. He also contributed to India's great fourth inning scores like:

429 against England (221)
438 against Australia (a hundred)
406 against WI (106) and many other where the fourth innings score were in excess of 300. He has also scored 2 centuries in a test three times. He has also carried the bat through the innings.

In fact, he never wore a helmet throughout his life except a skull cap from 1983 onwards. In fact, he was at his aggressive best in the 1983 test series against WI who had Marshal, Garner, Holding and Roberts. He scored a great 121 (127 balls), 236 NO (338 balls) and a great 90 (87 balls).

Often, people forget about his one day role when he took two catches in the 193 cup final. Did you ever know that there is only one instance when a fielder was awarded man of the match award in one day cricket? It was Sunil Gavaskar for his four stunning catches against Pakistan (Indians were all out for 127 while Pakistan was bundled out for 87 with Kapil taking five wickets.

In the end, he faced some of the most celebrated fast bowlers of all time, without helmets and sometimes on uncovered pitches (before 1977).
