For balls being straight and hard, helmets is a must for a bowler more than the umpire. Coz in the follow through, the bowler has absolutely no time to react to the smashing straight hits. If at all helmets are required, its for the bowlers only.

you mean the ball-guard? If he loses his balls, he'll still live and can continue to use his head. If he loses his head, he can forget about using his balls - he's dead. But I agree, ball-guards are important too.
