Glad to see such a sensible comment in the middle of these totally biased cricket fanatics' comments. By the way I am a cricket "fanatic" myself but feels the same as Mr. Kurian that on any scale, General Elections weighs much more than a cricket game. Please do not forget that this is the worlds largest democratic process we are the second largest populated nation after China which does not have a proper democratic setup. Whatever we might think and tell about the politicians it is them who are protecting this democratic setup. Remember how we shouted slogans and had "glamorous" rallys against them after the Mumbai attack. What will happen if any such unfortunate things happens during the IPL.

Moreover IPL is not just cricket but more a business. Its 100% entertaining though. But still its not important enough to postpone the General Elections or worth a risk.

I agree with philip kurian. IPL organisers think ipl is greater than the elections. Nothing should be greater than constitution. And elections are constitution and it is every indian's duty to recognise this and help. Afterall, India is one of the largest democracies in the world.IPL's move shows again that money is talking again.IPL should have stood by constitution.Well still nothing is spoilt. IPL is only big b'se millions of indians watch it. How much can they earn if it's held outside India? The Indian cricketers should take a stand and say that they won't participate in the next season of IPL b'se of this season's wrong step(if they are held by contract for this season.Moreove IPL is Indian Premier league. We all know how many people and even the contestants lose their lives during our General elections. Don't the IPL organisers recognise this? are they blind or are they Proud of money?

who cares for IPL!
by prakash narayanan on Mar 24, 2009 07:39 PM  | Hide replies

The argument of the BJP that "not holding the IPL in India would amount to buckling to
terrorists" does not hold water. The conduct of the 15th General Elections(the biggest
democratic exercise in the world!)successfully without any untoward incidents or security
lapses would itself be a showoff of our security robustness. It is the responsibility of every Indian to accord primacy to elections at this point of time.In a country where the voter turnout is already low, distractors like the IPL is good put-off till the end of the
elections. Moreover, when the elections itself is such a tamasha, do we need a IPL to
entertain us now?

Good One!!!

Now if all players, IPL Crew including Lalit Modi are going to be in SA for IPL matches, wont they exercise their right to vote. Or they think they are above general elections and do not need to vote.

Thought Provoking. As the millions of Indians know that Mr. lalit Modi is a CLOWN. He cannot think thro his pants. When he was boasting on many TV channels that he has plan B, C, & D, he actually had nothing. He was trying to fool the people of India. Especially the franchisees who has put in enough money in this game. Many of the teams has already started loyalty programme and all these marketing efforts by these franchisees are down the drain. and that too in these trying and difficult time. May god bless Lalit Modi with wisdome and also make his look beyong making money.

y r u blaming the politicians..just don't blame them because you have been blaming them all your life. First understand what the problem is and then figure out who is be blamed.

IPL and BCCI is not the one responsible for your electricity, road, education etc. They will conduct matches earn money and leave. Just because they have 10,000 Cr to spend, they cannot take the whole country to ransom.

wats the big deal...reap as you sow
by Indian on Mar 24, 2009 07:30 PM  | Hide replies

I totally agree that IPL and elections cannot be held at the same time. These are 2 important events for totally separate reasons.

Now if ppl are trying to find fault, then the real culprit is the one who choose dates such that they clash with each other.

Now it is very obvious that when Lalit and his goons first decided on the dates and they took govt for granted (based on assumption that Lalit and his team were intelligent enough to deduce that we will be having General Elections at the same time, if not the blame squarely lies on IPL and BCCI for not taking General Elections into account). Assuming that IPL and BCCI knew we were having General Elections around the same time, they should have asked the government first before fixing the dates. In either case IPL and BCCI are at fault. I do not understand on what basis are they accusing the govt for not providing security. The Govt. did not say "NO" to security. They said keep IPL after elections, which makes perfect sense. You do not want the nation to be caught in an IPL euphoria when general elections are going on.

IPL and BCCIs ego will bust this time and I will be happy to see that 10,000 cr that BCCI/IPL plans to spend will do down the drain. I just wish it went down Mumbai Gutter instead of Johannesburg ditch.

hai, u have clearly narrated the entire episode.if BCCI cannot postpone their itinery to make way for elections, can you call them patriotic enough to manage the indian team and its events.

See how the opposition is taking this as a chance to blame the ruling party.when will our politicians and beuracrats think about the national interest first then the rest.
