In my opinion, Boycs & Gavaskar were the best opening batsmen of the 70s while Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes were the best in the 80s. Barry Richards played too few matches to be judged as an all time great!

When Boycott came India, he always talks in favour of India. As soon as he lefts the boundry of India,he uses some argumental words about some players of India. But all together he always admires indian players.

Boycott's claim

How sad. And we thought that Boycott was a gentleman and sort of 'indianised'. But then, when ego comes in, HE GO.

You don't have to be sad. He has told these words in lighter vein. He has praised Gavaskar a lot. Boycott used to say during his commentry that he had West Indian ancestors (WI blood). We need to understand their culture better. Gavaskar was a great batsman with big ego. His fight with other teammates seemed to come out of his greed for money and so on.

What ego? He was the only player who really stood up for the players in his time.As for his clash with Kapil Dev, it was basically 2 different mindsets. So leave it at that. Each respects the other. Gavaskar is a jewel for Indian cricket. He did more good than bad.

Sunny and Boycs

I think Boycott was better against the moving ball, and Sunny was better against genuinely quick and short-pitched stuff.

Maybe that was because Boycott played most of his cricket in England, where the ball moves a lot. But Gavaskar had a pretty good record in England.

And Sunny was a better stroke-maker. No question about that.

I second that but Boycs had the tightest and most perfect defensive technique I have sen in any batsman

Gavaskar's defence was just as solid. Otherwise he would'nt have had such success as an opener. By the way, it was nice to see such a sensible post.
