modi is slapped left right and centre these days...even RCA slapped him twice...srinivasan doesn't loose an opportunity to do that..modi is currently the most sought after punching bag in BCCI

India lost T20 WC because Sehwag was not there and the Champion's league because Yuvi was not there. Without these two players team India is not even half...

Ranatunga you are cent per cent correct. Many so-called promoters are investing black money in IPL and other such games. They are not lovers of the game at all .They intend to promote themselves and further their business interest. How can we save the game from such vested interests?

We the Indians have forgotten that occasion cos even our win over the first ever T20 WC wasn't give pleasure for a long time but we still carry the memories of 1983 ODI WC win.

You have to salute the former Lankan captain for such a daring assessment without bothering about reactions or whatever......blatant commercialization will be the nemesis of many a young player, who will get led by the hype and hoopla but forget the basics and grassroots....they will all become good T20 players but sadly, India might have seen the last generation of great test batsmen like Tendulkar, Dravid, VVS and Ganguly.....

What is great in making such a conservative statement? In countries where cricket is popular such things would be appreciated. Old cricketers have to adjust to the changed scenerio. For this there is a need of change in the mind set of oldies. One should not complain till it becomes compulsory to play Twenty20. All forms of game have to be played simultaneosly. It is like having different forms of races like Marathon, 400M & 100M sprints. No body complains about it.

What business Ranatunga has with IPL? It's Indian Premier League and any Indian has a right to start a business in India. In India, there are so many aspiring cricketers. Not everybody can make it to the final eleven. What should those people do?Had IPL started earlier, Vinod Kambli's career would have been restored. India may have lost 20-20 World Cup, but in a sport, victories and defeats are part and parcel. It's not right to blame Lalit Modi or IPL for that. If you do not like something, don't be a part of it. Why a foreigner like Ranatunga should say something like this? Had he said the same thing if IPL started in his times or he had captained any IPL team?

by Ibrahim Masood on Dec 17, 2009 06:35 PM  | Hide replies

First of all you are not getting any offer from any team and secondly you are jealous because new players are earning like anything which you haven't.

In IPL, only indian players are not participating. Players from accross playing countries are playing. Even from Sri Lanka many players are participating. So stop talking bullshit.

India lost because of their poor perfomance but not because of IPL.

IPL is order of the day. T20 will continue to flourish along with Test and One days. Now, people are feeling bore to watch test...you urself the spectators strength in test cricket and compare with T20. You will no the difference.

IPL & T20 zindabad.

Ranatunga is a haughty busy body who thinks no end of himself. Beneath his seemingly professional opinion, any discerning reader will detect a viseral dislike for India. Ranatunga will do everything to promote anti-India feelings even in cricket. He is not as innocent as he soundss. Lets just ignore his bombast and useless opinions

Well said! I am amused and would like to ranatunga how it would be if he were to be attacked by terrorists? I wonder whether any of the srilankan players attacked by these thugs would venture to visit pakistan again.

Why should he feel jealous.
His home team Srilanks and even Pakistan is a much better T 20 than India. They performed really well in the World cup. The T 20 record of India after winning the first world cup is quite bad and is mainly because of IPL. What he has told is quite right.

Boss, a number of players from other countries played the IPL, they never got affected by it all! More IPL is a t20 game which sould have been a perfect practice for the t20 world cup. Players would welcome it than blame it. Ranatinga's comment is a joke and should be treated with the contempt it deserves!

Good assessment
by sharp critic on Dec 17, 2009 06:28 PM

Happy to read the posts in this column, which broadly state that T20 is actually killing cricket. It is a no-brainer that Test cricket involves of abilities being tested in batting and bowling, while one-day cricket and T20 are loaded in favour of the batsman. The worst part of this entire saga is that cricketers wouldnt really care for playing their country as they will earn substantially from their club.
Rangatunga has never minced his words. He continues to be bold not only in his play, but also his talk. There are very few in the public arena of his ilk. Keep it up, Arjuna.

Not the fault of IPL
by abhisek bhaduri on Dec 17, 2009 06:21 PM

India did not lose in T20 WC because of IPL. The lost because of their own faults....

1. Yoususf Pathan is grossly over-rated. He is big hitter and a star only in tournaments where true professionals don't exert temselves completely. He is not International class. Irfan Pathan is still a better bet than him because his batting is far moe consistent and he can also get some wickets (of course he is not in form, but as anoverall utility player he is any day a way better bet compared to his brother)

2. Ravindra Jadeja was a bundle of nerves. He was not matured enough to be put in a pressure environment in an International tournament as big as teh World Cup.

3. Dhoni all of a sudden has forgotten all his big hitting. He is trying to establish himself as a classic batsman which he is NOT. If he tries to play a composed game, he gets too slow and uncertain because he does not have that class. He was brutally exposed and could not even take singles regularly when India needed a fast scoring rate.

4. Ishant Sharma was not delivering even in the IPL...T-20 is too big a challenge for him.....

There are quite a few such cases, yet the great Indian Think Tank could not see the obvious, which was visible to the whole World...

foolish comment from a jelous ex player
by PRADEEP on Dec 17, 2009 06:12 PM  | Hide replies

Just because Mr Ranatunga did not have this type of earning capacity when he played does not mean this age era should also go the same way. IPL is pure entertainment (almost like WWE- except that it can be assumed that players play seriously and not on the basis of some predecided script. Because there is so much money in cricket good players turn professional and we can see rise of players like VIJAY and R Jadeja.
