Clowns
by kshitij tumbde on Oct 19, 2008 11:04 AM  | Hide replies

I wonder how come clowns such as Kiran More became chairman of selectors. Does India not have anyone else better for the job? I was hoping that Vengsarkar would be a better person but it looks like he did not want Ganguly to break his own record and hence he dropped him from the team for Irani cup.

I also wonder how come coaches like Greg Chappell were given blank checks to destroy TEAM spirit. The only person to survive or come good after Chappell era is MS Dhoni.

I have always felt sympathy for Ganguly, because he is the most successful captain India has ever had and this is not the way you treat someone who has this accomplishment even if he has some issues getting along with people.

Why the best captain has to go
by Crick fan on Oct 19, 2008 10:44 AM  | Hide replies

He is with out doubt the most successful Indian captain ever, till date. He had most talented Batsman of the era likes of Tendulkar, Laxman, Dravid in his team, He himself was no minor when we talk of batting. One never tiring Bolwer ever beside him- Kumble. He build up from here by promoting youngsters, Yuvraj, Zaheer, Harbajan, Sehwag, Deepdas Gupta were all promoted by Dada. But why did Dada loose grip on the things. From such a powerful position to a state where he was reduced to being cornered.
At first I like to say there is no doubt that he is one of the greats and has best fighting spirit. But he lacked the intensity occasionally, but always the enjoyed the power of being the captain and some times used it to his comfort and this little thing cost him dearly in long run. To explain this I would give following examples.
1. He rested himself on occasions when he found green top wickets, and let Dravid his deputy be the captain
2. The home series against Pakistan under his captaincy, he was not in good form and we lost that test series, Ganguli did not have very good average that series.
3. He was much targeted and slandered by teams like Australia and England, as he gave them back.
4. On Zimbabwe series the then coach Greg Chappel realized that Dada was at that point not in best of forms.
5. Dada knew the knack of using media for his benefit. So many things went public including Gregs confidential report.
6. 2008 Sri Lanka series was bad for him & his fans.

2 corrections

the zimbabwe team of 2001 -with the Flowers, Strang, Streak,Neil Johnson, Murray Goodwin,Travis Friend was definitely not a minnow - it had beaten Pak in pak and won a home ODI series against NZ

It was definitely better than WI team of 2006 and England team of 2005 beaten under Dravid captaincy

so the modified figures

Win 13 quality 8 minnows
Loss 13 quality 0 minnows

ratio 50:50

Dravid

Win 6 quality 3 minnows
Loss 5 quality 1 minnow
Ratio 60:50

Total wrong
During the period 2000-2005 when Ganguly was captain Zimbabwe won a matches against Bangladesh. And a match against India under Ganguly captaincy.

sanjay bhai,

Ganguly got the team out of problem, when it was left with Azhar and Jadeja accused of bribe. Think about the construction work it did. During Dravid's era, the team lost to Bangladesh in world cup.. did not go anywhere. Think of any other captain who build the team like Ganguly. All northies like Sehwag, Yuvraj, Bhajji are open about supporting Ganguly. He was not doubt the best captain India has ever had. There is not an aota of doubt about that. And with lesser criticism I'm sure his records would be far better.

sir don bradman played only 52 tests & scored 5000 plus runs but his captaincy & 99.96 average is unbeatten till date some people play 3 times the tests he played but do not announce retirement. so hats off to bradman. in mahabharat pandavas also went to wanwas & then got kingdon & then retired to himalayas so retirement is not important the financial benefits after retirement are of gr8 value

This is one of the most foolish comments i have ever come accross..Sir don did not play as many matches coz at that time travel time was more and only teamnt ah he was supposed to play more than 65 percent of his games was England where he could not stay whole year always to play and play and play....He retired at the age of 40 if a fool like dont know it..Then there was the World War II during his times which wasted many of his carreer years..He never told anyone that he wished to play only 52 matches it was just the fact that he could not..given a chance he wouldnt have told now to play even 200 matches coz of his passion and love for the game..so put a bottle cork/cap on ur mouth and just get lost....
