619 wickets are no doubt an incredible achievement. But an Avg of 30 means that opponent team will at least score around 300 runs each innings given all the bowlers in the team are of similar quality. Considering India probably did not have a better bowler than Kumble, It is no wonder that most of the time our opponent makes 400 to 500 runs and India's percentage of Test Wins are much much lesser than Australia. The situation is even worse in foreign ground, where we let opponent team score avg 350 runs each innings (considering Kumble's avg 35, but actually team's avg may be 45-50), its not sufficient to win a test match.

yes monna.it looks vey right as it looks. to be very precise its like 296 runs to pick 10 wicket. But if you look, in india score over 400 is nothing rare.and here he pick 10 wicket a the expense of 248 runs, which is pretty good. And abroad, we hardly get a pich where one can turn, i mean out side sub continent.Ballers like zaheer, srinath ( old era),sreesanth(SA series),RP and Ishant(Australia, england series) has used those condition very well. But still this guy has never been outsted.

Good analysis. This is the main reason why India's test wins are so low despite having batsmen like Sachin, Dravid, Saurav and Laxman. If India had even a single match winning pace bowler (like Kapil) to complement Kumble, India woudl have been an even better Test side over last 6-7 years.

Well, that's a big "If" in "If India had.."
India's two all-time best bowlers -- Kapil and Kumble -- both average 30 runs per wicket (much higher than some of the best bowlers of modern era). Overall Indian team bowling avg is much worse as rightly indicated in this thread.
If India had fast bowlers like Akram and Walsh who averaged much less -- 24 runs/wkt, then things could have been much better.
Or, if India had spinners like Murali (22/wkt)and Warne (25/wkt), then also India's win % could have been better.
Kumble; The Hulk of Indian Cricket has left Indian Cricket today . This is definetly an "End of Era". He has been instrumental in India's victory over the years. Above all he has been a real Statesman of the game. Wishing him all the very best in his future endeavors.
