Arithmetic calculation
by Kaushik Ganguli on Mar 07, 2008 02:41 PM  | Hide replies

Dhoni's interview to Anjali Doshi (pretty girl this) on NDTV was very similar. He said for the amount of money he was getting at IPL ie Rs 6 Crs, he could buy 1,142 bikes. That makes the cost of each bike Rs 52,539. But what bikes is he talking of?? Surely not of Hero Honda?

I feel Dhoni is the right captain for the current team who have more of a rural/ semi urban background and he can relate to them more than a Saurav/ Dravid/ Kumble who are all city bred. Good luck to him - if he can bring the world cup home in 2011.

Another opinion on Rural / Semi urban background.

The other day on CNN-IBN, Rahul Bose protested the usage of this small-town background when Rajdeep Sardesai tried to equate that people coming from small towns carry more more hunger and fire in their bellies. Rahul Bose was against it.

I am from a small town settled in the Silicon valley of India.

I don't agree with this rural / semi urban background makes you perform better than someone who's born and bought up from say Mumbai or Kolkatta....

Fact is both Rajdeep Sardesai and Rahul Bose come from the most elitist backgrounds in South Bombay and have achieved the pinnacle of success in life. So are they really qualified to comment on rural/ semi urban mindset?

It depends entirely on the individual - I have seen many persons who are happy to stay in their own shelll and watch life go by and there are others who work and live with a passion. You cannot generalise. But coming back to cricket, the current team needs Dhoni as a captain. There has been a sea change since the days of Pataudi and Abbas Ali Baig which will never come back. Anyway, in those India lost heaps of matches without much of a fight and in gentlemanly fashion with cuffs buttoned up.

Pakistan probably entered this phase of rural boys making it to the team in the late 1980s when Imran was the captain. They were very successful from say 1989 - 92 when they won everything but then slid by the late 1990s. Now Pakistan is in a poor shape.

Dear Mr.Kaushik Ganguli,

Then going by your logic, people from elitist backgrounds hailing from Metros are doomed fail all the time?

Your logical comparison of Imran's time concludes that.

I will still keep the topic limited to Cricket ONLY:

- Saurau Ganguly was the most successful captains India ever had. Comparable to Kapil Dev or Azharuddin etc., But it is a known fact that Gangulys are r-rich and Saurav doesn't even need to play.

- Dravid was born and bought up in Bangalore - the metropolis of Karnataka. He has numerous records to his credits.

- Sachin Tendulkar is a native of the Financial Capital of India - Mumbai.

I still do not digest the reason that people coming from Cities/Metros fare poorly in comparison with people coming from rural / semi urban backgrounds.....

Can someone please explain it to me?

What I mean to say is that for a city bred boy, there is no struggle for existence therefore there may be less fire in him. But it really does not hold true for class of people and differs from person to person.

You have the case of Dada whose father runs a successful printing business for last 50 years and who is immensly wealthy. On the other hand, Sachin, Laxman and Dravid came from middle class backgrounds. Kambli though from Bombay, was quite needy. But all of them were successful in their own rights since they had the will to succeed. In Kambli's case, he went astray and could not rein himself in.

On the other hand, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan was from Tirunelveli, middle class and was prodigiously talented. He could not sustain the pressure of cricket and took to drinking. Maninder Singh hailed from an army background with a elite upbringing and was again very talented. In his case, he was not handled well by either Gavaskar or Kapil Dev and could not play well, which was not his fault.

So there is really no hard and fast rule. Thats my whole objective.

Dear Mr.Kaushik Ganguli, please let it go yaar!

He just happened to mention that with the money he got from IPL he can buy a thousand bikes. He's passionate about Bikes. He just made a passing reference, that's all!!!

And here we have a reader who has calculated it to 1,142 with a cost of each bike as Rs.52,539.

6-Crores means do you think he will be delivered 6-crore in cold hard cash - Rs 500 & Rs 1000 notes? What about PC's share? That is also taxable, na?

And then what? After 6-Crores, Dhoni starts getting out for ducks? Do you think his employers will keep quiet?

Thanks Common man. Also, Rs 6 Crs is subject to TDS under Sec 194 J for professional services. So it cannot be paid in hard cash. Also, there is no suitcase which can store so much hard cash.

Refer Harshad Mehta's allegation against Narasimha Rao in 1993. Both are no more so we cannot conclude this at all and it will remain in the realms of ambiguity.

What is this Senior Vs Junior?
by Common Man on Mar 07, 2008 02:36 PM  | Hide replies

I sometimes don't understand this whole fuss about Senior Vs Junior?

Today's Junior after gaining experience is bound to be a Senior tomorrow. Does that make him bad? Is it unnatural?

Cricket is a team game. We need a blend of experience - some fresh, raw talent; some expertise; some vast experience. Else, it just doesn't make sense.

We cannot call the U-19 World Champion Indian team as THE Indian Team and send them to face Aussies in Australia...

Why make a big deal on Seniors Vs Juniors...

Anyone as long as their body permits and found to be passing the fitness tests should be allowed to play.

In my opinion, the senior v/s junior is the fight between players "who take their places in team for granted based on past laurels" v/s players "who fight it out for their places". In my opinion by having this Senior v/s Junior thing, they have ensured that there is no sacred cow in the team. Sachin did great to justify his inclusion while sehwag did not. If this continues, Yuvraj and the likes of him will get the message that they can't rest on their laurels of T20 win forever. I think its good for Indian cricket .. a bit of straight talk and action aligned with the talk

kathiravan you are born in this world as a result of an insane accident between two couples..so there is no matter to consider you..To understand cricket you need to know the rules of cricket and not the english alphabets ABCD..you moron...well,if you think that selfish crap as god of cricket then i took pity for you..keep praying him and wash his feet with water daily..who bothers that...but for now you morons along with that crap leave the cricket and team india.Well, they have come to cricket through his reference because there is no doubt how influencial he is in the corrupted BCCI.there is no way for that talented cricketers to get a way..so there is no problem in what way they choose to reach their goals.
your insane thought for sachin would never affect the team india and we pray he should be relieved pretty soon from cricket...however at last i understand you tactics is just like congress with pseudo securalism..now shut and get a life..

Sachin enjoys an iconic staus in the Indian team and it not correct to treat him as another player. In my view his presence itself is inspiring for the team.

So when Sachin should retire taht decision must be left to Sachin himself.

Poor Dhoni!! He is literally jealous of The Master and his earnings. He is aware that he cannot earn Ferraris like Tendulkar nor can he be a match winner. I have always noticed that he doesnt praise Sachin and his performances. Even Dhoni is aware that they won the series only because of the Master. Finals no doubt about that but also in the two league matches against Sri Lanka and Aussies where he scored 63 and 44 respectively and because of that India managed to reach final. Well Sachin nor his fans care a damn bit about Dhoni praising Sachin or not. The fact is that even in the so called young team Sachin is still a match winner and can single handedly win the matches for India for which the entire credit is taken by youngsters and mostly by the captain.
