Tendulkar - The great indian debate!!!
by Vishwanath CB on Jul 26, 2007 10:52 AM  | Hide replies

Dear Tendulkar fans,

The fact is Tendulkar is good but only in Indian/sub-continent pitches. Our(Indian cricket fans) main grouse is Tendulkar doesn't have the same aura outside the sub-continent pitches as he has it in here... He may have showed flashes of brilliance, but that is not suffice for him to be qualified as great. Infact his test matches average outside sub-continent is very modest. He has not scored that many double centuries as his contemporary players, like Lara, Dravid et all... So you can him a good player, or a great player in sub-continent pitches but not elsewhere.

I dont agree to your views mate ..

I believe that he is one of the greatest players of all time in world cricket .. and he has the numbers to prove .. get the numbers out .. what is his batting average away from home and what it is in India .. look at the batting averages of others from India .. over the decades that India has played.. and u will see that Sachin's name would figure in the top few ..

In ODI's there has been no other better player than him from India .. his name would be at the top!

Come out with numbers and check it out urself.. I would suggest not to go with the crowd and malign his great name .. He deserves a much better exit from World Cricket ..

Sachin ka naam ... Duniya yaad rakhegi ...

I agree.
In tests i agree that Dravid has been better performer abroad than Tendulkar but thats about it..still sachin is next best indian.
I honestly believe Lara, Ponting, Dravid, Sachin, Hayden and Kallis are top 6 batsman..
and if everyone says sachin played well under Azhar,, well than may be ganguly was not a good enough captain compared to him..
the truth is, each captain has his best batsman/bowler in his era...look at Wasim Akram, Mark Taylor or Hansie Cronje's record as captains..McGrath/Mark Waugh, Saqlain/Saeed Anwar for pak,, Gary Kirsten/donald for SA...same way india had Sachin/Kumble under Azhar..followed by Dravid/Harbhajan...but it deosnt mean others dint play well...others are also contributing...but there are some who just happened to be at their peak under certain captains..

The record books only show one thing that a significant decline has been observed after Azhar was dumped as the captain. Why the sudden fall in fortunes?

Sorry boss,I can't agree with u bocoz the statistics says that the only Indian players who's home/away match averages are almost similar are Sachin and Dravid. I too agree that current Sachin form is not good, but still i believe that its just a matter of a good innings. Can u name any player by using him we can replace Sachin? and Regarding Kapil's comment we all knows that he was a great player also we knows that how was his last few playing years..

Match fixing can deteriorate the players game...but you guys are talking about the good scorings under Azhar's captainship. You cant force to play good. If you are good then only u can bat good.

Sachin made 90% of his records under match fixer Azhar, who did his part in fixing matches and playing in rigged conditions thanks to which Sachin could play. Now, that Azhar is not around Sachin also faced a decline starting with his pathetic captaincy.

You guys dont have any rights to say anything agst Kapil. He is the best amongs all.

Inspite of being a medium pacer and inspite of playing very very less cricket as compared to todays scene where teams always keep on playing either in ur continent or abroad...His then achievement of claiming 434 wickets is better than anybody.

His commitment to the cricket to be admired. He is the only player who have never left the ground on the grounds of unfit. He gave 100% to the cricket when he was in the feild.

I remember once he was in fever and in the fouth innings Pakistan were to score aroune 120 runs and still he came in the field and claimed 5 wickets and bold them out just in 80s.

Todays generation who are writing comments on Kapil, definately dont know abt him. He was known as a pinch hitter as well...There are loads to talk abt him...

and definately cannot hear anything against him

Buddy he played 131 tests almost as much as Tendulkar played. We never will say he was lesser cricketer. But his records also show that he only can not be match winner if others do not perform as a team.

His comment was not correct.

Cricket is nobody's fiefdom, everybody has the right to express own views more so when u have played for the country with so much great honours like Kapil. I fully am in his side when at least sombody has come out and tould the truth even if it's bit bitter for a few who only have personal milestones in their mind. Tell me the facts of almost of the last 4-5 years when Sachin has come out and played a gem of an innings to save the team from brink of disaster which he has created many times with his nervous dismissals .whether one likes or not he is one of the most nervous players in the world cricket and that is why he could not be successful as captains as urequire nerves of steel. It is time paeole accept tha fact that great Sachin is claerly past his prime and time to deserve a place in the eleven. He is only playing now for his own benefit and personal agrandisement and his larger than life image has cost the Indian team a greta deal in the last few years when more able and competenet players of the likes of Dravid who have silently fought like sentinels for the saving grace many a time. And as far as Kapil is concerned, he by any chance a better all rounder in the world cricket than the mentined above having marshalled mediocre resources into stardom not as a fluke but with sheer elan and abilities of fantastic swing bowler , much better batsmen than any of the above and also abrillint fielder as well much like Gary even if he may not be the same class or so it would

Cant agree with you more. Kapil was better than Botham and Imran since he had no fast bowler support at the other end. His records speak for themselves. Moreover subcontinent pitches are a nightmare to fast bowlers and most of the wickets he took were here.

Ranjith, You can tell this if you were born in late eighties. It means you would have seen Kapil in his later part of his career. You would not be telling this if you had seen him during his prime years. In every match he had contribution be it Batting Bowling or fielding. He was one of the most exciting cricketers in India. Botham and Imran were better batsmen then Kapil. Kapil was far better in Bowling. Richard hadlee, of course, was the best among the four.

It was the selectors fault to keep playing him to break Richard Hadlee's record. Because of this bowlers like Venkatesh Prasad and Srinath could not play although they were in great form with the ball. Had Kapil quit in 91-92 his bowling average would have been better.

wat's the main reason is... In Earlier days (i.e) after winning the world cup 1983, all the eyes look upon Kapil Dev. After that he became famous and star cricketer of Indians. After Sachin's arrival, people slowly forgot kapil and kept tendulkar at top position,he became famous more than kapil dev. so, this may be one of the reason .. why kapil comments on sachin..

Majority of these wins are fixed masala tournament

Also, showing these mothballed statistics will not drive away the truth that Sachin is a choker

in the 17 years that u have covered above, such a huge fan like u also could find 10 such instances & again which include a 45 or a 53 & a couple of instances where India lost too. I guess great players are termed great by their consistancy in crunch situations & not by false excuses. In wisden top 100 innings played, he stands nowhere inspite of being played highest no of games the same wisden which has termed Kapil's world cup 175 run innings as 2nd (or 3rd)greatest. If you really want to know why we lost so many matches then you should go to cricinfo and see what happened to the matches we lost even when sachin made atleast 60 runs. I can tell you for sure. 8.      Sachin 110. Single handedly won the match against AUS. None of the other batsman scored even 50 runs.
9.      In a low scoring match against PAK, sachin scored 81 not out and won the match for India. Again none to cross 40 runs.
10.      Nail bitting match against AUS, sachin scored 88 and took a wicket to help India win match. Again none crossed 30 runs.
11.      Took 5 wickets and helped India win the match against AUS. Took the wickers of Bevan, S Waugh, Lehmann, Moody and Martyn
12.      143 vs AUS in Sharjah. No need to say about this. Whole world knows. But no one knows no in India team even crossed 35 runs.
13.      134 vs AUS in Sharjan. Again no need to talk about this, whole world knows.
14.      India made a huge total of 307 against Australia with the help of just ONE MAN SACHIN. 141 runs of 128 balls and took 4 crucial wickets of S Waugh, Bevan, Martyn and young to win the match for India.
15.      Even though this match is against Kenya. I definitely have to mention as this is just after his father died. Made 140 from 101 balls and helped India win the match.
16.      139 again AUS. Only laxman made 83, others not even crossed 25 runs. This match was nightmare for Warne.

not to disappoint you. I am giving you couple of them alone now. I will give the rest tomorrow.
in 1991. India lost the match against Australia in AUS by 300 runs. People will blame tendulkar for that defeat as well.Tendulkar made 114 and 5. No one made even 45 in both the Innings from Indian team. KAPIL DEV the great scored 4 and 1st ball duck in second innings. We lost coz no one bowled properly or batted properly other than Tendulkar. kapil bowling figure was 151 runs and 4 wicket in that match.

You guys want sachin to score 100 in second innings. let us see what happened when sachin scored 100 in second innings.

1996 ENG vs IND in ENG
Sachin scored 24 and 128 runs in 1st and 2nd innings.None scored even 30 other than Srinath in 1st innings. In the 2nd Innings when Sachin made 128 the next highest score was 18 runs by manjrekar. Is it all still sachins fault.

Sachin scored 47 and 113 against NZ in NZ 1998. No one else scored even a fifty in 2nd Innings. So we had nly 213 runs lead. Which is no way possible to take 10 wickets with our bowlers. So we against lost. Again this is in NZ and Again sachins 2nd innings 100.Still we lost.
World knows what happened in chennai VS PAK 136 runs second innings century.
1999 VS AUS in AUS. Sachin made 116 and 52.No one else scored even a fifty from both innings. We lost the match. Still its sachins fault.

WHENEVER WE LOSE MATCH, WE KNOW WHOM TO BLAME COZ HE NEVER TALKS. SO WE ALWAYS BLAME HIM.

Here is some statistics for people who have watched only two cricket match in their life and say SACHIN played good only in 2 cricket matched and helped India win the match.

1.      Sachin scored 53 runs in 41 balls and helped India win the match with 3.3 remaining. He also got 2 wickets for 39 runs in 9 overs. He was the highest run scorer for India & also highest wicket taker for India in that match. Also it happened to be his first Man of the Match Award
2.      Sachin bowling figure was 10 overs 34 runs and 4 wickets(Richardson, Lambert, Logie, Dujon) in the match against WI. WI scored just 145 runs. Sachin remained 11 not out at the end of the match.
3.      Sachin scored 62 against South Africa in a low scoring match of 178 and took 1 wicket. Helped India win the match. Only Amre was 50 all others could not even cross 20 runs.
4.      Yet another low scoring match against WI in Aus sachin score 57 and remained not out and helped India win the match.
5.      Sachin 54 not out and 1 wicket for 39 runs in 10 overs against PAK. No other batsman even crossed 50 in this match as well. Both batted well and bowled well
6.      In the rain affected match against ZIMBABWE Sachin scored 81 runs and took the only Zimbabwe wicket and helped India win the match. Again no other batsman crossed 35 runs in this match. Contributed both bat and ball.
7.      In a low scoring game and first match as an opener sachin score 82 of 49 balls and helped India win the match. No one crossed 25 even in this match as well
