The terific Trio
by amit singh on Aug 09, 2007 10:26 AM  | Hide replies

For the Critics of Sachin:
1. the magnificent 165 at Chennai in 1992-93 that a 19-year-old Tendulkar scripted against England? And yes, India won that Test by a massive margin. Please go and dig into your archives
2. a 20-year-old Tendulkar winning India the Colombo Test in 1993 by scoring an unbeaten 104 in the second innings? We repeat, in the SECOND INNINGS.
3. Where were the statisticians when Tendulkar scored 142 and 96 in two consecutive Test matches in Lucknow and Bangalore against Sri Lanka to help India win both the games?
4. What have to say about the knock of 155 not out against the rampaging Australians in Chennai after India were looking down in 1998? Wasn't that a 'defining' knock according to you? And once again Sir, that knock has come in the second innings.
5. In Chennai against Steve Waugh's Australians in 2001, with the series tied one-all, Tendulkar's 126 in the first essay held the Indian innings together, something that even Shane Warne acknowledged after the game. And India won that match.
6. The 193 that he scored on a seaming wicket at Leeds, Headingley against England And we all know the match result
7. Also, what have to say about a 19-year-old schoolboy saving India a Test match on a fast, bouncy Perth wicket thanks to a brilliant 148?
Even his first Test hundred, an unbeaten 119 at the Oval in 1990 was a match-saving effort. Comments, please?

Well said!!!

For the critics of tendulkar!!! I still remember the 2 matches agains pakistan !! one in a test match at chennai where India lost by 12 runs !!!we lost the last 5 wickets for some 5 to 10 runs!!! was it tendulkars fault????

One more on Indias tour to Pakistan in 2003- 2004 when India won the test series for the first time!!!
In the second one day chasin 330 runs Indians were still in the hunt until Sachin got out!!! He just scored 141 runs!!!!Now an interesting fact!! the second highest scorer for India in that match was Dravid ... 39 runs!!! Now when you chase such a big target you expect the others to atleast show some responsibility!!! End of the day only Sachin was blamed for not finishing the match!! What do you expect from him!!! where were the rest of the guys!?????
Just want to say "No one can beat Sachin" hes just toooo goood!!!

3) DRAVID'S WINNING SHOT AGAINST AUSTRALIA...

For the critics of Rahul Dravid:
Scored 100 against all Test playing nations except Bangladesh. No other player from India or the sub-continent has scored five or more. Not only records show but most of his innings have helped India to win. For example, the 2001 India v Australia Test in Kolkata, where Dravid's contribution was 180. This match entered history because a team won after following on. August 2002 India v England at The Oval. Dravid's 217 helped India to level the series. December 2003 India v Australia at Adelaide. Dravid's 233 and 70 not out helped India register a win on Australian soil after 22 years. April 2003 India v Pakistan, Rawalpindi Test. His career best 270 helped India win the match and series after 52 years. He is a wonderful and courageous player

contd:
8. when Nelson Mandela stood up to applaud Tendulkar when he smashed a belligerent South African attack comprising of Allan Donald among others for 169 glorious runs? No other Indian batsman except Azharuddin stood up to that attack. Agree?
9. And what about those centuries amidst the desert storms in Sharjah against Australia in 1998 when there was an open talk of some Indian players trying to lose those matches because of bookmakers? And one man fought for his country tooth and nail, and won!
10. How can one forget the 98 against Pakistan in 2003 World Cup? Barry Richards calls it one of the best one-day innings of all time. (Also, Tendulkar was the highest run scorer in 1996 World Cup and was single-handedly instrumental in taking India to the semi-finals), where he was the highest scorer.
11. If you are blaming Tendulkar for India losing the Chennai Test against Pakistan in 1999 by 12 runs in spite of scoring 136 in the SECOND INNINGS with a back that would have made ordinary mortals collapse on the field, then does it deserve to be called the Bible of cricket?
Incidentally, even Sunil Gavaskar scored a magnificent 96 on a vicious turning track in his last Test Innings at Bangalore against Pakistan. We lost that match by a mere 16 runs or so, but does that in anyway diminish a great effort?

Dear Mr. Amit,

Dravid has already scored 2 centuries against Bangladesh in test matches. So your statement "Scored 100 against all Test playing nations except Bangladesh" is very wrong one.

Please correct the same.

In fact, he is the only batsman who scored test centuries against each test playing nations on their soil(ie. means in the matches played in those test playing coutries against them).

Please refer cricmania.com, if you have any doubt reg the above details.

Against South Africa
- 148 at Jogennesberg (1997)

Against Zimbabwe
- 118 at Harare (1998), 200 at Delhi (2000), 162 at Nagpur (2000),

Against Newzealand
- 190 & 103 at Hamilton (1999), 144 at Mohali (1999), 222 at Ahmedabad (2003)

Against Australia
- 180 at Kolkatta (2001), 233 at Adelide (2003),

Against West Indies
- 144 at George town (2002), 100 at Mumbai (2002), 146 at St. Lucia (2006)

Against England
- 115 at Nottingham (2002), 148 at Leeds (2002), 217 at London (2002)

Against Sri Lanka
- 103 at Colombo (1999)

Against Pakistan
- 270 at Rawal pindi (2004), 110 & 135 at Kolkata (2005),128 at Lahore (2006), 103 at Faisalabad (2006)

Against Bangladesh
- 160 at Chittaking (2004) & 129 at Mirpur (2007)

In total 22 test matches Dravid scored Centuries or above (in two test matches, he scored centuries in both innings, thus his total centuries become 24). In these 22 matches, INDIA have WON in 9 matches, DRAWN in 12 matches and LOST in only one match.

Mahendra Sharma, just replace Ganguly with chandu borde, and Sachin with Ishant Sharma, and put your name inplace of Kumble, that forms a perfect gully cricket team.

Why do you want to play Ranadeb in place of RP Singh who have been doing quite well in this series!
And why drop Rahul Dravid! He still is the best batsman India have for test cricket.
Grow up Mr Sharma!!

Ranjit, I liked the probing questions you put to Dravid. I think they seem to be coming like yorkers to him. Mr. Shinu, when someone like Ranjit quite appropriately asks testing questions; you call him to be joker? Grow up man. It seems almost an era had gone by since something substantial from Dravid's blade came. He needs to deliver if Indian cricket has to do well esp. the third test at Oval. I think the burden of captaincy is affecting his batting.

I think the onus is on the magnificient four to stand up and win the series for India. We have had enuf where we squander the advantage of being 1-0 up in the series. Come on guyz this is ur last visit to England, make all of us glad with series win.

well, in that case, we need to have a nation wide polling to elect the captain. I am surprised that none of the TV channels have come up with the idea.

Fab Four
by Murali Iyer on Aug 09, 2007 09:21 AM

By saying the Fab Four, u r excluding VVS, and thus doing a great injutice to him .. Although he may not find himself being spoken about in the same breath as the 4 that u have mentioned, but his contriution to Indian cricket cannot be ignored .. Please bear in mind that he has saved India from many a sticky situation, and this will also b his final appearance for India in England, as he doesnt find a place in the ODIs .. Please give him his due .. He has been a great servant to Indian cricket, and has gone about his job with a simplicity and quietness, which makes him an integral part of this gentleman's game .. A true flagbearer of the old traits of this game .. Murali Iyer

Get the facts correct.

While mentioning the 1971 Oval test the writer says above 'England managed to squeeze home by six wickets, chasing 173 for victory to clinch the three-Test series 1-0'. It was India that won the match with Abid Ali scoring winning runs after Chandrasekhar bowled England out for 101. Who can forget his match winning spell of 6 for 38? Please make sure to put correct information.

There is another incorrect information. It says that the only series India won was in 1986. The fact is India won 2 series in England, once in 1971 and then in 1986. This reporter does not even know the facts and writing as if he is the expert. What kind of reporting is this?

While the "England managed to squeeze home" is wrong... the other one was correct because the script goes like this "something not achieved since 1986, the only time India has managed to win a series in England" ... please read the word SINCE...
