stupid to not allow flag
by Shyam on Mar 20, 2005 06:50 AM

This is really stupid...when the politicians throw mic at each other and fight openly they still dont insult the nation but when some cricketers wear indian flag on their helmets (read heart) they are considered insulting the flag? what kind of insult is that? sure they didnt wear flag on their underwears!!!!! Some guy wrote here that forces on border are more patriotic than cricketers so cricketers shouldnt be allowed! now that is the most laughable and sad stat of mind..I believe every single country man deserves to hug his/her country's flag..yes we are greatful and indebted by our forces on border but does that make us less patriotic? If thats the case than all of us deserves to be deported isnt it? Sure cricketers play under name "India" dont they? so we tell them you play for india but you dont carry indian flag? Absolutely rubbish and with ill taste.

Why not ?
by Venkatesh on Mar 19, 2005 07:43 PM

Why can;t players have the flag on there helmets........we can have thousands of Rs50-caps, T-shirts, hand-bands floating around and they have problem of having the player keep a small flag on there helment. Replace the team name from 'India' to 'BCCI', and do the same for every other sports...

FLAG
by Lionel Baptista on Mar 19, 2005 04:01 PM

Trust the bureaucrats to be killjoys. one would think that the tricolour is a source of pride. instead of looking after domestic security as the home ministry is supposed to do they stick their ugly noses into matters that only show them up as cretins.

All the cricket players play for tha BCCI(a private entity) and not India. This was settled in court recently and I think the flag issue is an outcome of that. Right decision...

Overreaction
by Ravi S Sathish on Mar 19, 2005 06:36 AM

Hey Ashish

I'm guessing you are tad over-reacting. If there is a flag-code in place why dont we just accept it. Flag code as you very well know is in place to prevent misuse of National emblems. Cricketers like ordinary citizens have been quilty of disrespecting the emblems knowingly or otherwise. Just to refresh your memory Ganguly even after becoming the captain had worn the flag upside down on his helmet. This faux pas was widely condemned in the media. I'm sure the messrs Tendulkar,Pathan and Ganguly can come with innovative ways of expressing their patriotism.

point indeed, but why dont cricketers protest?
by Suyog Deshpande on Mar 19, 2005 02:14 AM

Yes,

The ban is surely ridiculous no doubts, but, why cannot the Indian team (or so callled BCCI team), or for that matter, all sports persons go to Indian Government and ask for an explanation?

If hosting my flag is my fundamental right, instead of whining in public, what have all the cricketeers done? Why can't they go to Indian Government & ask them the permission themselves? Why cannot Tendulkar, or Ganguly, or Dravid write to Sports Ministry against the ban? In a nation that really worships them, I am sure their pleas or request won't go unanswered... Is this so hard?

Given the public stature of these people, I am sure they can make a difference - but why bother really, isn't it? - after all its BCCI and not team India they represent.

Sitting and whining in public doesnt really make things happen - but using your stature to make things happen makes a difference. I hope the likes of Tendulkars, Gangulys and others see this and take a stand to restore what is theirs.

Suyog
