Its Every Indian's Right to take pride of The National Flag
by Nishant on Mar 19, 2005 02:09 AM

I think its every Indian's basic fundamental right to proudly display the 'Tiranga' as a sign of pride and self-respect. By displaying the flag and paying respect to it every time Sachin acheived a milestone, he has set an example for the young generation. I have seen children playing on streets, doing what Sachin does. May be they dont exactly understand the meaning and depth of the gestures, but one day they will realise and feel proud of it. We need a common bond to bind the whole nation together... what can be more apt than the national flag and cricket together...

Flag

We are losing sight of things that make us proud ... the last thing we can do is hold up our flag or say we are Indians or even stand up when our National anthem is being played. We need some foreign country to teach us how to respect our own land !

Bring back the flag - why ?
by SRKPRIV on Mar 18, 2005 11:45 PM

Stop the symbolism and do something really fruitful... they are not really playing for the nation actually. It is completely commercial, and lets remove any thing and everything government from that actually. Let them make money, create more competitin, and make the game good... that's what we need. Not some national tri-color in the helmut etc...

Flag is pride

Cricketers play for their country...there are no two ways about it. The country watches and exults in their triumphs, as it does writhe in the pain of their failures. To the above comments, I say if you can't swallow it, don't watch cricket, don't insult the sensibilities of those who play and those who watch. Anybody should be allowed to sport the flag...it is a matter of national pride, not insult...stop this pinko thinking, please!

I have no strong view whether people should be allowed to display flag whereever they want. but my personal believe is that there is a history behind respect for that flag, we don't want it to be below any other flag or touching ground.
If people are allowed that next day we would see flags torn, on roads, bins everywhere.
As far as wearing flags on hats is concerned, I live in UK see people wearing british flag on their underpants and used to think atleast we know how to respect our flag. Flags are hoisted to show nation's respect and not flaunted on your body for showoff.

Tricolour
by Vinod Pathania on Mar 18, 2005 08:43 PM

First of all I would like to ask one question. Will you you please tell me the ratio of the people(not indian citizen) who know sachin Tendulakar : Tricolour.I think it will be 90:10. Tricolour is a recognition of India and also some time India is known through Sachin Tendulaker. When Sachin wears Tricolour ultimately India shines. When a player plays at international level he represents his country and a country is best represented by its national flag.So I am strongly in favour of that player should be allowed to bear national flag as a marck of respect.

it's my flag too you know
by karan puri on Mar 18, 2005 08:42 PM

it's Entirely ridiculous ... not allowing the cricketers and other sportpersons(narain) to have the national flag displayed on their equipment. It is my country .. and it IS my flag too ... who's the government to stop me from displaying it proudly?

thats whats stopping true patriotism from taking root in this country .... a national anthem no one seems to know the meaning of, a national animal everyone is keen on killing, a national flag that we prevent from being displayed.

Simply stated, the national flag is a symbol of my pride in my country ... n i am allowed to display it .... no government can take that right away from me. If i disrespect it in any way ... any government( or fellow citizen) has a right to impose the severest punishment.
And honestly ... in a nation filled with underachievments and disappointments ... there aren't too many proud moments than sachin kissing the national flag on his helmet .... after a centure on the world arena.
There is a difference between brazilian women wearing bikinis made out in their national flags and sachin adorning his helmet with it ... we should recognise it .

Sure thing!!!
by Chetan on Mar 18, 2005 07:32 PM

Splendid article... I want to know if we could get this decision revoked. As these foolish bureaucrats fail to understand that, cricketers are wearing the Indian Flag on the helmets, on the temple of their head< which denotes supreme respect.

Tricolor and cricketers
by Sameer on Mar 18, 2005 07:28 PM

I think this is an attempt to create controversy out of nothing. If the cricketers can wear national colors on their person, nothing like it. But even if they can't, it does not hurt anything. I don't think the crickets would lose respect, pride or the feeling that they are paying for their nation, if they do not display the national flag.

Display of Flag
by vinod on Mar 18, 2005 07:15 PM

I dont know how stupid this Government can get. If they are not respecting the flag, so be it. But they dont have any right to stop the cricketers from having the flag on their helmets. Its highly stupid and unnecessary. Hope to see the flag back on sachins helmet. It is inspiring when we see the flag flying high. And the government could think of doing something worthwile instead of making an absolute fool of themselves.
