Not necessary

It was not necessary to put this rule in Action

it will completely abolish the value of All-Rounder

help the bowlers
by shauriya on Jun 28, 2005 05:54 PM

The new rule may help to make the game more interesting but it still does not help the bowler. Rules must now be framed so that it helps the bowler to up his ante say like increasing the number of bouncers per over and dispensing with the (marginal)wide balls down the leg side.

New Rules and their impact
by Kaushik on Jun 28, 2005 05:48 PM

It will make the game more dymanic in nature. The current version has thrill but it is quite predictable...Hit in first 15 overs...consolidate in next 20 then again raise the tempo in the final overs. If a team concedes more than 300 runs its almost under pressure to chase it and the game is virtully over (barring exceptional games likes India triumph in Natwest) in the first session. With the new rules the team batting second can add a extra batsman to counterbalce the runs to be scored. Also in a scenario if a team has been unable to put on decent score it can hope to fight back with extra bowler in the second session. So the game definately become dynamic and balanced.
Also the idea that all rounders will die out is wrong cos a genuine all rounder is one who is slected as a batsman and a bowler. They will stay. The ones who will lose are players who bat and bowl in pieces. So indirectly the level of skill involved would also be increased as an impact of the substitution.
The field restriction rule will make the captain and the team think more on strategy and gameplan. So the strategy and planning also improves.
Change is paramount to everything that evolves.

Time to try something new
by Abhishek Bathla on Jun 28, 2005 05:48 PM  | Hide replies

I welcome this step of ICC.One has to keep trying something new and innovative to keep the game interesting. At least there is no harm in trying...
Realise that this rule gives more flexibility to the team.rather than declaring your 11 men you have 11 and one hidden so more tactics...more interesting...if a spinner is being attacked more by a batsman he can be replaced by a pacer for example.
Or suppose you hav to chase a big total and you are just 1 wicket or so left you can replace the last man with a genuine batsmen !!
So now more than cricket captiains intelligence will be tested...a captain will have a much more tough job to do now !!

Why the 12th player rule won't work
by Hiran L.(NY) on Jun 28, 2005 04:34 PM

Out of the new rules, field restrictions rule is a good thing and it increases unpredictability & competitiveness of the game, and those booring 20-40 overs in the middle of every innings can be avioded.

However the whole substitute fielder rule is not well thought of. Imagine two evenly poised teams "A" and "B". Both teams are required to announce their playing 11 and the 12th player before the toss. Team A has a batsmen as the 12th man, and carrying a extra bowler in the playing 11. Team B is doing the same, and they also have a extra bowler in the playing 11 and a batsmen as the 12th man. Team A wins the toss, and naturally they decide to field as they have a extra bowler, and Team B has to bat at a disadvantage as they are minus one batsmen. ICC law allows 12th player to be called in at any stage of the game, however once the 12th player is called in, the replaced player WILL BE RULED OUT 0F THE REST OF THE MATCH. So if Team B, decide to call in their 12th player, who is a batsmen, then most likely they'd be replacing a bowler. Becuse this bowler will be ruled out rest of the match, when they are bowling they'd be minus one bowler. This is a bad scenario for the team loosing the toss in a evenly poised match

It is life line for many cricketers
by Bhaskar Rayavaram on Jun 28, 2005 03:34 PM

This is a good chaneg for cricket. Allows many players like Laxman, Kumble to be still part of the mix, being special skilled. One doesnt need measures like Dravid keeping. Plus the over restrictons rule will make the game break the predictability it has picked up. Again, not all stroke players can be openers (players like Dhoni or Yuvraaj, can make use of those overs well, if they are batting duiring second half).

Substitute players can be even extended to allow players to be part of the playing-mix during their peak time. Many countries (Aus, Eng, India, Pak, SA) have embarassingly rich bench talent that, they can even put 2 teams on the international picture. Making the young blood wait until the seniors retire, would mean they are way past their peak youth by the time they start careers. So the recommendation would be to do it like American football. Have an offense and defense teams. With 3 common players as a must and then allow the other 8 to be "offense"(can all be pure batsmen) and the defense 8 can be all bowlers+ good fielder. That means they can have 20 players (3+8+8+1 reserve) all actively playing, making cricket more attractive and competitive!!

new rules
by noshin nizam on Jun 28, 2005 03:32 PM

i dont think tthis rule will be successful becoz it will create more tension to the capain as o whom he should select? this policy can oknly be successful in the game of football becoz the duration of the game is short but for cricket it is not possible for captain to invite a new plaer on to he field expects him to do well in all deparments.so i m totally against the new rules.

it will work
by shyama charan vats on Jun 28, 2005 03:21 PM

hi guys
I m of the strong opinion that the new rules of one day cricket will surely enhance the thinking and playing abilities of all the players. No doubt that the job of the captain will surely become much more tedious and a much more experience and vision. The captain will now have to think very rationally and will have to give more emphasis on the nuances of the game.
Not only this now every player will have to put in their best. The side having more perfectionists will be have an upper hand as the substitution rules say that any team can substitute any player at any point of time and the substitueted player will get to do everything i. e. battinng, balling .etc.
Now the ballers will also have to bat.The team having more of all rounders will excel. But these all are just speculations. The ramifications of these rules will only come it will come into pratice.Till then we will just have to sit back and wait.
