Changes
by Amit Thard on Jun 29, 2005 08:08 PM

These changes are really interesting but are they really necessary? The game has its highest ratings right now, more sponsorships than ever before and there are more players who are professional than before where they had day jobs to substitute for cricket. Even domestic level cricketers are doing well.
So, is the game really in trouble. Do we really need these changes? I think making the one day game more bowler friendly will certainly help. Test cricket has never been better with more wins than draws. We even have twenty over games coming up, do we really need these changes? If anything, i think we need to reduce cricket so that our players don't get burned out and there is no cricket over kill for viewers. Too much of anything gets annoying. Either way, i am not sure we really need these changes.

The new rules might just be able to liven the game up
by Avik on Jun 29, 2005 03:02 PM

The new rulles for ODI's initiated by the ICC does bring a new angle with which the game is to be played from now on.It removes the predictability with which the game was being played. The fact that a feilding captain can use the two 5 over fielding brackets into use the at any point of time in the game, does add one into the feilding side's armoury. I personally, have reservations though about the substitute player being initiated. To an extent it removes the unpredictability of pitches & tosses which added flavour to this beautiful game. But time shall tell about it's results as in a macro level it's still a rule applicable for all playing nations.

But one awaits the start of application of these new rules, it'll be interesting to watch if a sehwag will have to calm himself down after 10 overs to wait for the next 5 over feilding restrictions to be put in use? Will they give Ricky Ponting's side an added advantage toi curb down the run making abilities of weaker batting sides? Time shall tell and we, cricket fans wait with eager interest.

New rule for substitution in One-Dayers
by Krishnaswamy.N on Jun 29, 2005 10:20 AM

Substitution of one player in the midst of a game may be advantageous to teams that could not afford an effective fifth bowler in its set up in the present scheme of things. Teams like India can substitute a batsman with a regular bowler if they bat first in the match. Also, in such a situation, after gauging the type of the pitch whether fast paced or a turning track they can choose a pace bowler or a spinner for such substitution. Moreover it will give more opportunity for the fringe-players who wait indefinitely for a chance to play in the present scenario.

the rules seem to be interesting but one must avoid tampering with the rules too much as odi are already the compressed form of test.these rules are good for the spectators but not so good for the game . i must add that 20-20 cricket is a complete massacre of the game

Will the new game plan work?
by Avdhut on Jun 28, 2005 09:22 PM

Hi,

I Think new rule of fielding restriction is a good innovation to ODI. But the rule of Soccer like substitution seems like too much. Cricket is not a sport which is like Soccer, Hockey or even Basketball where this substitutions work and doesn't make lot difference to the pace of the game.
But in cricket this substitution rule can change the game.
If ICC wants to give protection for injured player during the match they should allow the 12th Man to field, bat and bowl in place of the injured player, only if the match refree and two coaches feel that the injured player can not take further part in the match. And that 12th man should be named before the start of the match.

some suggestions
by ist on Jun 28, 2005 07:22 PM

Since the fielding captain can choose field restrictions for 10 overs, batting captain should allowed to replace one of his players with a hard hitting batsman and the batsman who was on crease can come back and continue later.

So much decision will be taken when the captain is on the field, teams should be allowed to use communication device. This way coach can convey any message instantly.

If a team not able to complete 50 overs in time it will loose the chance to replace the player.
