cricketers are selfish croocks
by jeev_90 on Jan 03, 2005 03:13 PM

Sachin tendulkaar and the ilks make a million bucks by exploiting the emotionos of poor people in India. Now in the time if crisis these guys need to rise to the occassion, but I dont think they will. These are a bunch of selfish guys only here to make bucks, open restaurents, drive frenzy cars and make wealth. These guys just dont care for the poors. Damn them............

Useless article !!
by K Anand on Jan 03, 2005 02:44 PM

I fail to understand what has convinced the author so strongly that the indian cricketers are not going to do anything.. and who told the help is "needed now"? Everybody swarms to help out when the situation is hot, actual support and assistance is needed a few months down the line when the issue takes a backseat. So, I would say the help is needed 'then'. Patience my dear, they are conscientious human beings and they would pay their due when the time is right. Adios!

Hate the sin, not the sinner.

We all know there has been a disaster and everyone needs to reach out to help those who have suffered. There are relief workers who are worthy of a lot of praise, and the rest of us need to financially support the relief operations. However, irrespective of whatever amount of money a cricketer, a politician, a bollywood star, an industrialist or for that matter any celebrity may have earned or accumulated, it is incorrect to publicize an issue indicating they have not done enough by making comparisons. Looking at the scale of the calamity, it appears the relief and rescue operations will be required for months. The need for funds is immediate, and funds will be required in the near future as well. Even if the board did not donate immediately, it should not have an impact on its image - why make an issue out of it instead of just letting the donation do its part? This article started off very well and would make readers empathize with the situation, but I feel that most part of the rest of the article should not have been published. Instead, why couldn't those 8 out of 10 mails just have been sent to the cricketers and let them get the message, instead of creating unnecessary hype?

Record breaking Indian Cricketers
by Praveen Mendonca on Jan 03, 2005 02:27 PM

Our current Indian team only play for records rather than for the pride of country. Only one can hope whether our multi millionaire cricketers will generously donate for tsunami victims.

Cricketers to do more
by afsal khan on Jan 03, 2005 02:23 PM

The Indian cricketers will have to do more for their country when disaster arises.I read sehwag's bat and kumble's shirts are going to be auctioned. Is this the right way to help the needy people?.Why are they waiting for this ?.They are getting rich amounts for playing cricket in any form, but they are not coming to say that they will give money or help. From the external pressure only they are coming out to play donation matches. Some of the film actors already came voluntarily to help this badly affected people. They can say like they will arrange progammes or concerts to raise money for donating this people. But they never waited.they voluntarily came forward to do the basic help.Player like sachin and saurav getting big amounts for matches and advertisements but they are keeping silent when disaster arises and people badly need help. After the board decides only they are coming to play donation matches. They have to give money from their own pockets. Why are they waiting for people to see their exhibition matches and give money as fees.I m very much saddened by the behaviour of Indian cricketers.I found in news papers there are childrens died in tsunami when playing in beaches.

Pointless!
by Raj on Jan 03, 2005 02:15 PM

It's futile even attempting to cajole our cricketers to contribute for a noble cause. The truth is these guys are gluttons. They'd amass all the wealth and not spare a penny for a worthy cause. Also, cricketers draw miserably low fees compared to international sports personalities such as Jordan or Beckham or Schumacher or Sampras or Woods or Hollyfield. India is a poor country so any amount in crores is HUGE. It's absurd comparing their fees to international athletes.

Even then, how many times have you heard a Sachin or Ganguly support a charitable organisation? They perhaps will not give water to a dying man, since their contracts only suggest selling bottled carbonated water. None of our top league cricketers have ever donated a decent sum of money for any humatarian cause. On the contrary Sachin won't pay duties on his Ferrari. The media needs to raise such issues more often. Common people like us are donating and these guys are yet to decide!

I blame the media for elevating these guys to such high platforms. Every other day on rediff itsef one would find a couple of stories on cricket. We should blame ourselves before we blame the cricketers.

You're talking Chairty or some tax
by Sunny Chhatwal on Jan 03, 2005 02:13 PM

This article amounts to pressure tactics. Donating for relief is a matter of individual choice. Let the cricketrs decide for themselves, as any other citizen is allowed to, whether rich or poor.

I completely agree

Everyone knows Indian cricketers are richest. But its surprising to see none of them have contributed anything for tsunami relief. Our cricketers should learn some thing from australians. They are the first cricket team to donate for tsunami. That too when its not even their own country.

Cricketers

I completely agree. Indian cricketers are an unusually greedy lot. Unlike some celebrities who genuinely believe in giving till it hurts our cricketers seem content with amassing great fortune and fame but don't find it necessary to give back to the common people who idolize them. Shame on Indian cricket and shame on Sachin Tendulkar who despite being the highest paid sportman in India has failed misearbly to dig into his deep pockets and make a difference to victims of the disaster. This also goes out to all the Bollywood stars (Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, et al) who continued with their New Year's Eve celebrations in Goa popping bottles of bubbly and gorging on caviar and European Salmon while people were starving on the other side of the country. Bravo to India's celebrities!
