Cricketers

I completely agree. Indian cricketers are an unusually greedy lot. Unlike some celebrities who genuinely believe in giving till it hurts our cricketers seem content with amassing great fortune and fame but don't find it necessary to give back to the common people who idolize them. Shame on Indian cricket and shame on Sachin Tendulkar who despite being the highest paid sportman in India has failed misearbly to dig into his deep pockets and make a difference to victims of the disaster. This also goes out to all the Bollywood stars (Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, et al) who continued with their New Year's Eve celebrations in Goa popping bottles of bubbly and gorging on caviar and European Salmon while people were starving on the other side of the country. Bravo to India's celebrities!

They prefer taking not giving
by Vinu on Jan 03, 2005 01:56 PM

Our cricketers only interested in taking not in giving from their pocket. They must remember it is because of the audience & fans they are at this level. If everyone stop watching cricket, they will know where they are. Fans learn from your mistakes, they have so much to give still they are not coming forward, but, you keep watching their matches and make them feel on the top. They better realise it is their good will which will keep them in peoples mind not the money. Every celebrity or know person owes towards the society and nation as it is those people who gave them the status they are in now. Corporate workers are always better as they respond to such incidents quickely & contribute minimum of one day salary. We have many superstars, Kings, star come politicians, politicians and great personalities who are yet to respond.

After all they are yet to get over their new year celebrations... Hope they will come forward after that at least

It is upto the individual as to what one wants to do. As tendulkar once pointed out, our cricketers do not make all their charity work public. I am deeply hurt by whatever happened in the last week. But forcing people to donate is not the right way. Also saying tha BCCI followed other cricket boards is not valid. They may have donated anyway. This article I feel was better 'unwritten' if there is such a word

Simply pathetic

Certainly they can do more and they should have ! Its so sad to see no initiative from our so called much hiped about "Heros"!! But if one remembers the "Ferari tax exemption" episode of Tendulkar then their current passivenes is not much of a shock.

I really wonder if they should be given so much of importance if they can't come forward to help in such a time of need.

Shame on Cricketers
by Senthil on Jan 03, 2005 01:49 PM

While the entire world is puring in aids andd other kind of help, its shame on Indian cricketers that they havent yet been much of help. As highest paid Indinain sportsmen they MUST contribbute generously.

While this may be a bit irrelevant I think you should focuse not just on the cricketers but the mindset of the Indian elite per se. As an exstudent from one of the premier institutes of India only a hundred kilometres from Kolkata this correspondent had bitter experiences when he mooted a proposal for the halls of residences to forgeo their customary Dewali celebrations and to divert the fund for relief work during the Orissa supercyclone . Of the many selfserving excuses put forward the one proffered by a girl representative left an indeliable impression on me she said " the show must go on " . Never thought that it was all a show but atleast she was honest . So why blame the cricketers ? Aren't we the educated elite whose education is funded by the taxpayer even more culpable ? Infact I think this approach of targetting the celebrities basically lets ourseleves off too easily . After all we should remember the adge "people who live in glass houses ..." or perhaps we are following Stephen Leacock's advice in this regard ?
