tendulkars fiat duty exemption controversy
by p.ashvini kumar on Aug 15, 2003 10:45 AM

It is really sad to note that so much is made out of on this issue, I think people who are making such hue & cry over this issue are forgetting what a cricketer has to sacrifice and particularly about sachin who played a match even when his father died , poeple should remember his contribution to the indian cricket and not hurt him. In any case it was a gift as a token of his achievements , which as a country we should be proud of , why not people make such hue & cry when our politicians make scandals?is it fair. Leave sachin alone and let him concentrate on his cricket.

fiat to pay duty on sachins car
by rinu mathew varghese on Aug 15, 2003 09:37 AM

It doesnt matter whether Fiat is ready to pay the duty or sachin himself .The bottom line is the exemption granted of 1.13 crores and as long as the government gets this money its absolutely fine .
The coffers are dry and we cant even increase the number of arjuna awards for lack of funds ,hope this money received will promote other sports .Its goverment apathy that when michael ferriera won the dubai billiard champinship the T.V set given as a prize was not exempt from duty
On this Independance day let my country ,the government and people awake .JAI HIND

TOO MUCH OF PAMPERING AT THE COST OF INDIAN ECONOMY
by DAMODAR CHODANKAR on Aug 15, 2003 08:09 AM

I think it is a stupid decision of waving the duty. He is not a lord. He is a business man because cricket is not a sport and he tries to take benefit of that. This same customs department receives
him like a lord at the airport trying to get a photograph clicked with him. At the same time these same custom guys harass and try to rob the poor citizens of our country who after slogging for one-two years return back home with some small gifts for their loved ones. I think it will be a good gesture to try and help these poor labourers instead of pampering a guy who is much capable of getting ten more cars and pay duty at all times. He should be hold responsible for the downfall of our economy at times.

Tax on Duty Amount
by C.N.Shankar on Aug 15, 2003 06:27 AM

If, indeed, Fiat pays the duty in India, in Rupees,
still Sachin will have to pay Incom Tax treating the duty amount as income. This will be, naturally, on the top bracket.

it is nice to note goi is not losing on duty for sachins car. fiats gesture is welcome . else we would have loved to hate sachin for claiming the exemption on duty for his new car
